Thursday, Mar. 22, 1962 Page Three FU Group Elects Officers At Meet Glenn Diggerness, Farmer, and Herbert Mehihaft, Tripp, were reelected chairman and secretary of the Farmers Union Grain Terminal Association at a bi annual meeting held in Mitchell Saturday. Problems pertaining to the association were discussed. New managers introduced included Darrel McKown, St.

Lawrence, Arnold Bettechman and John Townsley, Huron, Howard Ackman, Lake Preston, and Lyle Henning, Sioux Falls. Attending the meeting, held at the Brig Cafe, were 35 managers and employees of the association and their wives. Obituaries JAMES O. BIRKETT James O. Birkett was born May 15, 1902, to Harry and Sarah Birkett of Gratiet, and died Feb.

1962, at his home near Mt. Vernon. He moved to South Dakota in 1905 with his parents, settling near Spencer. He received his edtication in the Spencer public school and in 1918 moved with his family Davison County, where, until his death, his home with his mother. He was preceded In death by his father in 1940.

Survivors include his mother, Sarah, and 8 brother, Howard of Mitchell. Funeral services were held March 3 at the H. Noble and Son Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Frank E. Lochridge officiating.

Music was furnished by Miss Vera Sprout accompanied by Mrs. L. H. Raber, Pallbearers Included Fay, Fred and James Rhoades. Alois Weins, John Malde and T.

V. Jones. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery. CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank all for the comforting sympathy, flowers, memorials, acts of kindness extended to us during the loss of our loved one. We are deeply grateful for his neighbors and friends kind deeds.

God Bless you all. The family of James O. Birkett MRS. EMMA STAEHLE MILLEN Burt. April 3, 1882, the daughEmma EN Krietbe was born at ter of Peter and Anna Krietbe and died in Mitchell March 8, 1962.

She attended school at Burt and In 1900 was married to Albert Staehle. They lived in Iowa until 1919 when they moved to Mitchell. In 1932 they returned to Iowa where her husband died in 1946. In 1948 she was married to E. H.

Millen and lived in Mitchell until her death. Services were held at the Congregational Church March 10 and In Burt later the same day with burial in the Burt Cemetery, Survivors include GA. her widower, a daughter, Mrs. L. Sauerman, a grandson and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and brother. She was a member of Century Club, the Methodist Hospital Guild and was active in the work of the Congregational Church. She was also a member of the Abbott House Auxiliary. Memorials are to be made to South Dakota Children's Aid (Abbott Houser, the Salvation Army and the Congregational Church. KATHERINE HOFFMAN Katherine Marken, daughter of Mr.

and Mrs. Marken, was born in Germany Sept. 2, 1884 and died in Mitchell Feb. 14, 1962. She moved to the United States in 1897 with her parents, settling in South Dakota.

In 1900 she was confirmed in the Luthern faith. S. married Otto Hoffman in 1905, living in Jerauld and Davison County until her death. Survivors include her widower, Otto; one daughter, Esther of Yankton: two sons, George of Mitchell and Leroy of Loomis. She was preceded in death by one son, Elmer, three brothers and one sis" ter.

Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran Church Feb. with the Rev, A. C. Schroeder officiating. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery.

NOAH L. SMART Noah Leslie Smart, son of Joshua and Anna Smart, was born in Walnut, Nov. 27, 1894, and died in a Sioux Falls hospital Feb. 24, 1962. Mr.

Smart moved from Iowa to a farm near Dupree, S. and following service in World War he moved to the Ethan area where he resided on a farm. He was married to Mary of Ethan who preceded him in death in 1955. Mr. Smart was employed in chell for many years as a trucker and the past few years had been a resident at the State Soldter's Home in Hot Springs.

He was admitted as a patient the Veter8N5 Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, Nov. 4, 1961. Survivors include one son, George Wallace Smart of Sioux Falls and two daughters, Mrs. Ro bert J. Murphy Watertown and Mrs.

Urban S. McDonald, Mitchell. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Frank Darmer of and Mrs. George Welland of Sioux City.

Funeral services for Mr. Smart were held 27 at the H. Noble and Son Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James M. Doyle officiating.

Burial was in the American Legion plot of Graceland Cemetery. Military rites were conducted at graveside. Pallbearers were Dan Morgan, Hal Taylor, Eldon and Alva Blacksten. Harold Anderson, Jack Thurman, Lawrence McEntee, Louts Schnabel, Ray Bollock, William Boeckman and Earl Mayhew. The interior includes flourescent Youth For Christ Meeting To Be Held Saturday The documentary motion picture, "The Face of American Youth," will be shown Saturday at 7:45 p.m., in the Mitchell Sentor High Auditorium, sponsored by the Mitchell Youth for Christ, and featuring Ken "Pappy" Edwards. a director of Youth for Christ in Chicago.

Edwards Is a representative in Chicago Family Court, a juvenile delinquency center. lle is also in charge of Lifeline Camp, to which many quent youths are taken each year. Edwards turned to this work following an early life of crime. In jail, facing a possible charge of murder, Edwards was rehabilitabegan his college training at the age of 40. He worked for a year AS the Lifeline Director of Ohio Youth for Christ prior to his move to Chicago.

He is presently responsible for 48 boys who are on probation to the Chicagol a Youth for Christ. In addition to his appearance at the auditorium, he will speak Sunday at the morning and evening worship services at the Mitchell Assembly of God Church. The Rev. R. O.

Tufte is pastor of the church. Former Resident Dies In Wisconsin Mrs. John M. Siberz, 86, el longtime Mitchell resident, died Monday in Cashton, according to word received here by W. H.

Siberz, nephew of Mrs. Siberz. Mrs. Siberz was residing with her sisters in Cashton. Her husband preceded her in death in 1949.

After deliberating only about one hour and five minutes the Jury returned with a "not guilty" verdict in favor of Harlan J. Steichen, Woonsocket. The trial started Tuesday morning. Testimony was heard from Davison County Deputy Sheriff Lyle Swenson, Dr.

James Vose, pathologist, and Highway Patrolman A. L. Bortnem, Mitchell, all witnesses for the State. Testimoney ended about 4 p.m., Tuesday. Court wAS recessed until 10 a.m.

Wednesday for the court's instructions and final arguments by the attorneys. The case went to the 11 Jurors at 1:15 p.m. (One of the Jurors became ill during the reading of the court's Instructions and was sent home.) Serving on the Jury were Emil Gerlach, Mrs. Richard Funk. Ludwig H.

Jurors called for the March term of the city court are to report again at 10 a.m., March 27 to hear the case of the State vs. Larry Fitzler, Mitchell youth who faces charges of petit larceny. Mrs. Jensen died at a Mitchell hospital Wednesday morning. Survivors include one son, L. Edward Jensen of California: one daughter, Mrs. Alice H.

Pearson, An engineer with Ray L. Roby, local consultant engineering firm, Is 52 years of age has lived in Mitchell almost All his life. He was employed with the city engineer's office for about one year following his discharge from the service in World War II.

Judge Nichol was notified last week that the board will meet Friday in Washington, C. Major items to be discussed at the meeting include the planning of 20 rallies across the country to coincide with the Madison Square Garden Ralley in New York May 20.

They will discuss planning of additional workshops for speakers and plans for the national convention to be held in the nation's capital May 25-26. The group will also review proposed foe for registration of delegates and a proposal for allocation of votes at the convention to member groups and individual members. There is a tentative proposal that would allow each individual voice at the convention. Dr. Smith, a native of Wisconsin, WAS graduated from Dakota Wesleyan in 1912, received his Master's Degree from Columbia University and his Doctor's Degree from the University of California. He spent 8 total of 24 years teaching in Methodist schools in foreign lands including Peru, Mex1 Panama.

He served as president of the Pan American Institute in Panama from 1944 52. The veteran educator is married and the father of four children, Matthew who is associated with the State Department in Washington. D. Albert, an General Electric in Pittsburgh; Mrs. Baltus Falls, and Mrs.
