rested in the fact that it was an objective hard hitting reappraisal of professional boxing today Brinkley in his Journal specials has developed a technique of giving a sense of freshness and immediacy to material thoroughly rehashed before he ever applies his light journalistic touch to the subject IN LAST hour report there were no new indictments brought forth against pro boxing or any new facls uncovered Nevertheless the TVcr co-produced by Ted Yates and Stuart Schulberg was a graphic examination of the current state of the sport which has been responsible for the death or 227 men since the end of the last war It also brought into sharp focus the reasons for its dubious position today Many of (he sequences during the hour concerned themselves with Bobby Foster a young Washington DC heavyweight who works part time as a garage man and night club bouncer His story was used as a springboard for an examination of boxing as a business and profession and it dramatized the reasons why young men run risks to become ring heroes TOO TIIE HOUR touched on the plight of former fighters Beau Jack King Ievinsky Jack Sharkey Primo Camera and Joe Louis There were interviews with Benny Parct's widow who is living off Social Security Emile Griffith who expressed sorrow for death and Cassius Clay filmed before he won the championship Sen Phil A Hart (D-Mich sponsor of a bill before Congress which would federally regulate boxing explained the advantages of licensing promoters and trainers And Gov Edmund Brown of California boxing's militant and outspoken opponent dealt a few deadly blows in its direction Brinkley concluded when the hour was over that if the federal government save boxing it will be killed by its own selfishness and Because of some excellent production techniques clever film editing and a jazz background score the program packed a powerful punch TIIE announcement that George Scott has been nominated for an Emmy for Side West recalled the time he was an Oscar nominee back in for a supporting role in At that time he declined the honor Wonder if he'll do the 6ame with the Emmy nomination? few days after a historic ruling has gone Into effect requiring all future TV sets to be equipped to receive both VHF and UHF channels The new all-channel requirement is an attempt to alleviate the situation to which Corpus Christi's first TV station fell victim By requiring that all sets be equipped with both UHF and VHF tuners Congress and the FCC hope to improve chances of competing successfully with VHF stations and thereby increasing tne number of stations on the air The core of UHF problem is the inability to obtain network affiliation the networks prefer VHF stations because most TV sets in the country are equipped only to receive VHF Without network programs UHF stations find audiences and advertising hard to come by Since 1952 almost 230 UHF stations have gone on the air: about 110 of these have ceased operation By contrast 530 VHF stations are in operation ORIGINALLY FOUR CHANNELS were allocated to Corpus Christi: 22 and 43 on UHF and 6 and 10 on VHF Ch 43 was granted first in December 1953 to oilman Hunt of Dallas who sold the permit to Dallas broadcaster Cordon McLendon McLendon later announced that he had decided not to use the permit to build a station here it would be a poor financial The same week in 1953 Ch 22 was granted to Coastal Bend Television Inc which put KVDO on the air in 1954 with film programs from all the major networks When a coaxial cable between San Antonio and Corpus Christi was completed in late 1955 KVDO brought the first live network show here the Duke-North Carolina football game KVDO spent most of its lifetime fighting a losing struggle for survival It made several attempts to have Coitus Christi designated an ail-UIIF city asked that Channels 6 and 10 be assigned to other Texas communities and tried one legal maneuver after another to keep the local VHF stations from going on the air Its opposition from pro-VHF forces was equally adamant They stressed the superior power of VHF and the desire of local citizens for full live network service At the height of the controversy the chamber of commerce distributed petitions to be sent to Washington asking that KYDO's requests be denied Other battles meanwhile were being fought for the VIIF channel permits Gulf Coast Broadcasting Co wras selected over the Baptist General Convention of Texas for Ch 6 and KS1X-TV (now KZTV) was awarded Ch 10 over two other applicants KEYS-TV and Superior Television Inc whose principal stockholders were Jack Wrather of Los Angeles and Maria Helen Alvarez of Tulsa EVENTUALLY KVDO LOST its king struggle and Ch 6 went on the air on May 23 1956 followed by Ch 10 In October of the same year The death knell began to sound for KVDO when Its network contracts were terminated NBC and ABC programs went to Ch 6 and CBS programs to KSIX-TV In early 1957 KVDO was sold by Coastal Bend Television to South Texas Telecasting Co Inc It was operated with an independent program schedule until August of that year when it went off the air A prophetic footnote to this story was recorded in March of that year when an officer of the newly organized South Texas Telecasting Co predicted: Chrisd will have a third VHF station with an American Broadcasting Co Seven years later it does TIIE CUPPINGS TELUNG of Corpus early television days reflect an aura of excitement long gone from the television scene The medium then was a relatively new eagerly awaited pleasure now it's more of a timeworn habit The coming of a third station may bring a little of that excitement back It will at least bring more variety more choice to
