Herring called them Of course calling Herring and passing mute Terry Elston spoilers is like calling the Pittsburgh Steclers a good football team or Thomas Henderson outgoing The truth but not the whole truth so help me Bill Yeoman What Herring and Elston did this football season was more like search and destroy or at least rewrite several forged-in-steel football outcomes Eric (The Assassin) Herring and Terry (The Triggerman) Elston performed their greatest bcut-the-clock stunt yesterday by ringing in the new year of 1980 with a miracle 'victory over Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl That's in contrast to how the Cougars started 1979 when they blew an unblowable lead to lose to Notre Dame on the final play of last Cotton Bowl The Cougars didn't wait until time was gone to stop the Cornhuskers but they didn't have much margin for error either When an Elston spiral found Herring for the fifth and final time 12 sec-onds remained on the clock three seconds less than what was left when Herring and Elston teamed up to beat the Texas Aggies by an identical 17-14 count three months ago When Herring gathered in the game-winner it was 385 days 35 degrees and about 28 yards removed from Kris miracle grab of a Joe Montana pass that handed Houston a 35-34 loss in the 1979 Cotton Bowl It was 20 degrees that day with a chill factor of 20-below when Haines leaped-across the sideline in the same end zone to grab Montana's winning pass catch was routine enough at least when compared to the 37-yard one-hand grab he made to set up Elston's touchdown run against the Aggies This time Herring made sure using two hands Lest his one-hand reputation be questioned Herring pointed out "Yeah but I had to tip it with one hand before I caught it" He explained the fourth down all-for-nothing play this way: "I'm supposed to cut inside the linebuckers as they head for the flat to cover the running backs coming out of the backfieid Two Ncbruska guys were right there One (corner-buck Ric Lindquist) reached for the ball but it looked like he reached a little high and the ball went under his arm then I hit it and knocked it 'up and caught it" Herring Insisted the ball was untouched by Nebraska hands Lindquist said he got a piece of it Yeoman Houston's head coach said he didn't see the play very well 1 knew something good had happened when everybody started going crazy" Elston who ran or passed on 10 of the plays in the 13-play winning drive had this view: "It was play action and it had been open before We made a first down earlier in the drive with the same play Eric is supposed to look for the linebacker und safety then find an opening between them No he wasn't wide open But hey it was fourth down this was it I had to force the pass a little Yeah there was some traffic in the Elston completed five of seven passes in the desperation drive that followed a Nebraska touchdown only 3:56 from the end of the game Four times Elston passes ended up in Herring's hands "He has a way of getting away from people better than anyone we have" Yeoman said of Herring "His speed isn't great we kid him about it but he's not bad on moves He can move sideways with the best of them He kind of darts und he will get open" The Cougar boss who broke a coaching no-no by openly praising his 1979-80 team as best we've ever had" described the trigger Elston this way: "He's got great equipment and he remains calm" UH did that all season in winning seven of its 11 games in the fourth quarter Elston was the key in comebuckers against Florida AAM Texas Tech und Nebraska Kicker Kenny Hatfield won lust quarter decisions over Baylor and Arkansas The 11-1 finish probably means a No 5 ranking in the final poll for the Cougars But the seeds to this one were sown one year ago on the same Cotton Bowl field when the Cougars conspired against each other to blow a 34-12 lead in nine minutes against Notre Dame "We won because of the incentive in Herring said not going to bury us we're not going to quit We stopped playing and got our butts kicked last year We learned from that "From the word 'go' from the day we found out we were coming back to the Cotton Bowl what happened last year has been the first thing on our minds" Whatever mind-over-matter fate the law of averages or perfect execution under must-do pressure the Cougars put a perfect ending to their best season There was of course one more thing as Herring explained: "It had to be a little luck too" Saturday Ok 71 San Bawl Washington 14 THat Llbarty Bowl Fann Stata Tula na 4 Tangerine Bawl LIU first downs Then Houston took the lead on Hatfield's 41-yard field goal that just drifted over the bar into an 8 mph southerly breeze But Ncwhouse's fumble opened the door for Nebraska to take the reached the Ohio State 7 Early in the fourth period Schlichter hit Doug Dunlcy with a 58-yard pass play carrying to the USC 21 and two plays later the Buckeyes reached the 10 before Schlichter and Calvin Murray were hit for losses of 6 and 10 yards Schlichter then hit Murray on a pass reaching the 7 before the Buckeyes elected to go for Janakievski's final From l( Oklahoma major college team
