Rumor is that Zellweger, who plays the last surviving kid, tried to stop the release of the film in light of her new role as America's ingenue. Not so McConaughey, the film's main bad guy, who has announced that the film is "a good'un." Perhaps he realizes that a horror film on his resume puts him in some pretty distinguished company. Here, then, is a look at stars with a horrific past: again. Star: Tom Hanks High points: Beloved Oscar winner for "Forrest Gump," "Philadelphia" Exploitative origins: "He Knows You're Alone" (1980), small role in stalk-and-slash thriller Comment: NA Tom Hanks No.

3 Texas Chainsaw' movie spurs memories By MICHAEL H. PRICE Knight-RidderTribune Service When Renee Zellweger was still in Austin, Texas long before she charmed Tom Cruise in "Jerry Maguire" she did a little movie with a guy named Matthew Mc-Conaughey. This was long before he nuzzled Jodie Foster in "Contact." Three years later, their faces are plastered on magazine covers, and the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation" has come back to haunt them. The movie is the No. 3 sequel to the notorious 1974 gorefest about teen-agers held captive by backwoods maniacs.

There wasn't much good about the film except its title, which propelled it to cult status. The latest incarnation, shot around Austin in 1994, was held hostage by ColumbiaTriStar, which neglected to issue the film until now. But even Kim Henkel, the Texas-based writer-director, has to admit that the belated timing isn't too bad. "You'd think that after 'Scream' made such a hit last winter, this new 'Chainsaw' would be hot," Henkel says. "Y'know: teen-agers Michael Landon Star: Jack Nicholson High points: Too many to mention here.

Thirteenth Guest" (1932), with G.R,' at large in a creepy old mansion where people keep getting electro-! cuted Comment: "I just knew, if I stuck around Hollywood long enough, they'd, give me a shot at dancing sooner or later." Rushdie marries girlfriend in U.S. ceremony LONDON Salman Rushdie married his girlfriend of three years on New York's Long Island, according to newspaper reports over the The author with a $2.5 million price on his head wed Thursday in the Hamptons and is on his honeymoon somewhere in the United States, the tabloid Daily Mail said, quoting an unnamed ''publishing associate." The newspaper didn't identify Rushdie's new wife. The bride is said to be a British-born publishing editor who has "gone through hell to stand beside Salman," the New York Post reported Saturday, quoting a source who requested anonymity. Redford finally making 'The Horse Whisperer' NEW YORK Robert Redford has something to shout about. After several false starts caused by script and casting changes, Redford is finally making "The Horse Whisperer," serving as director and producer of the film in addition to starring. Initially, Redford hoped to cast Emma Thompson and child star Natalie Portman in two key supporting roles, but months of delay for script rewrites ruined the plans. "The English Patient" Academy Award nominee Kristin Scott Thomas and newcomer Scarlett Johnansson, 12, now co-star, Filming in Montana, Redford plays a horse trainer working with an injured horse. Due in December, the movie is based on i Nicholas Evans' 1995 best-selling novel.

"I thought about not doing it," Redford says in the Sept. 5 En-; tertainment Weekly. "The forces seemed against us. And the kind of actor I am and the kind of director I am aren't that com- patible. But it was a good part, and I had a feel for the material." New video by McGraw, Hill top country choice NASHVILLE, Tenn.
