Herald Thursday, December 6, 2001 Local 3B Deaths funerals Elizabeth Baker LANCASTER Mrs. Elizabeth McDow Baker, 86, of 2424 Douglas Road died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Springs Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Douglas Presbyterian Church, with the Rev.

Lawrence Peebles officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Baker was a daughter of the late Alfred Cunningham McDow and Elizabeth Patterson McDow. She was retired from Springs Industries and was a member of Douglas Presbyterian Church.

She was the widow of Wade Hampton Baker. Surviving are her daughter, Christine Baker of Lancaster; and two sisters, Margaret Brice McDow and Janette M. Steele, both of Lancaster. The family will receive friends at home and at the Douglas Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall after the funeral. Mahaffey Funeral Home is in charge.

Amanda Cope ROCK HILL- Miss Amanda Renee Cope, 12, of 407 Rich St. died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at home. The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at West Main Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev.

John Powell officiating. Amanda Burial will be at Cope Amanda Cope Grandview Memorial Park. A native of Rock Hill, Miss Cope was a daughter of Billy Wayne Cope and Mary Sue Davis Cope. She was a seventhgrader at Sullivan Middle School, where she was a honor roll student and played violin in the strings program. She was a member of West Main Church of the Nazarene, where she was active with the Bible quiz team and worked with the other children in the church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are two sisters, Jessica Cope and Kyla Cope, both of Rock Hill; her maternal grandparents, Mack Davis of Old Fort, N.C., and Linda Davis of Buladean, N.C.; her paternal grandparents, William Cope and Shirley Cope of Rock Hill; and her maternal great-grandmother, Lois Faye Ingram of Bakersville, N.C. Rhoda Cudd HEATH SPRINGS Mrs. Rhoda Lane Cooper Cudd, 79, of 1884 Dean Lane died Wednesday, Dec.

5, 2001, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Lynnwood United Methodist Church, with the Revs. "Tony Adams, Gene Ammons and Brooks Walker officiating. Burial will be at Rich Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Williamsburg County, Mrs. Cudd was a daughter of the late William Benjamin and Mary Olivia Wilson Cooper. She was a homemaker and was a member of Lynnwood United Methodist Church. Surviving are her daughter, Vivian Beckham of Heath Springs; her brother, Plowden Cooper of Lancaster; three sisters, Kathleen Cooper and Mary Sue Byrdic, both of Lancaster, and Wilhelmina Cooper of Heath Springs; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonient at Cauthen Funeral Home Lancaster Chapel and other times at the home of Vivian Beckham, 1880 Dean Lane.

Memorials may be made to Lynnwood United Methodist Church, 1573 Lynnwood Drive, Lancaster, SC 29720. Elizabeth Daves ROCK HILL- Mrs. Elizabeth Bell Daves, 79, of 438 Guilford Road died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at home. The funeral will be 2 p.m.

Friday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. William Pender officiating. Burial will be private. A native of Rock Hill, Mrs.

Daves was a daughter of the late T. Fred Bell and Nellie Boykin Bell. She was a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her husband, Robert D. Daves; two daughters, Betsy D.

Gero of Hornell, N.Y., and Deaver D. Armstrong of Ann Arbor, her ter, Ellen B. Lane of Rock Hill; and four grandchildren. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Cauthen Funeral Home Rock Hill Chapel is in charge. James Faile KERSHAW Mr. James William Faile, 74, of 6410 Kershaw-Camden Highway died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster. The funeral will be 2 p.m.

Friday at the Kershaw Chapel of Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Revs. Steve Miller and Larry Reeves officiating. Burial will be at the Center Grove Baptist Church cemetery. A native of Lancaster, Mr. Faile was a son of the late Carl Foster and Georgia Baker Faile.

He was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church and was retired from Springs Industries, with more than 40 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Luella Morgan Faile; two sons, Allen Faile and William Faile, both of Kershaw; two daughters, Lula Grace Hargett of Kershaw and Sylvia Ann Hilton of Heath Springs; three brothers, Odell Faile of Lancaster, Woodrow Faile of Elberton, and Garrison Faile of Kershaw; two sisters, Sherry Bush of Danville, and Thelma Sanders of Lancaster; nine grandchildren; and six gr great-grandchildren. Martha White Gardner, 87, of 201 Chesterfield Ave. died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Springs Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev.

Robert A. Adams officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Fort Lawn. A native of Chester County, Mrs. Gardner was a daughter of the late John Edwin White and Laura Vivian Collins White.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a former member of Fort Lawn United Methodist Church. She was the widow of J. Heyward Gardner. Surviving are her daughter, Faye Neveu of Lancaster; two brothers, J. Ed White of 1 Rock Hill and Davis White of Edgemoor; her sister, Ernestine W.

Galloway of Jonesboro, three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Miss Meyer was a daughter of the late John Meyer and Ann Sheldene Smith Meyer. She was of the Catholic faith and was a 1970 graduate of Plain Edge High School in New York.

Surviving are her sister, Patricia Clooney of Kingston, N.Y.; and two brothers, John Meyer of Beth Page, N.Y., and Doug Meyer of Spartanburg. Catherine Powell LECANTO, Fla. Mrs. Catherine T. Powell, 62, formerly of Rock Hill, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, in Gainesville, Fla.

A graveside service was Nov. 19, 2001, at Magnolia Cemetery in Lecanto, with D.L. Erickson officiating. A native of Lecanto, Mrs. Powell was a daughter of the late Jeffie Smith and Zady Hodge Smith.

She was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Rock Hill. Surviving are three sons, David Barnes of Conway, Kenneth Barnes of Rock Hill and Jeff Barnes of Myrtle Beach; her daughter, Sandra Knight of Rock Hill; three brothers, Porter Smith of Westville, Robert Smith of Central Point, and Carl Smith of Lampoc, two sisters, Virginia Moore of Lecanto and Mary Viva Sellers of Columbia; and six grandchildren. Wilder-Fountains Funeral Home in Homosassa Springs, was in charge. Oscar Snipes LANCASTER Mr. Oscar Marion "Shug" Snipes, 76, of 3880 Great Falls Highway died Wednesday, Dec.

5, 2001, at Springs Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Victory Baptist Church. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park. A native of Lancaster, Mr.

Snipes was a son of the late Oscar Sims Snipes and Ardle Saphrona McManus Snipes. He was a retired shop manager at Springs Industries and was a member of Victory Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Annie "Ann" Moseley Snipes; two daughters, Virginia "Ginny" S. Mathis and Dianne Moore, both of Lancaster; his brother, Clifford Dewey Snipes of Lancaster; his sister, Louise Funderburk of Lancaster, two grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Larry Sizemore officiating. A native of Fair Bluff, N.C., Mrs. Strickland was a daughter of the late Lake Phipps and Jewel Phipps.

She was a homemaker and was the widow of Odell Strickland. Surviving are her son, Lonnie Dale Strickland of Moncks Corner; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great -grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon today at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel and other times at home. Charlie Wilmore MIAMI Mr.

Charlie Wilmore, formerly of Great Falls, The died funeral Monday, Nov. Saturday, 19,2001. was Dec. 1, with the Rev. Glenroy Deveaux officiating.

Burial was at Hollywood Memorial Gardens cemetery. A native of Great Falls, Mr. Wilmore was a son of the late Julia Wilmore and Louis Wilmore. He retired from the city of Miami in 1993, with 39 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Jean Hepburn Wilmore; his son, Charlie Wilmore; his daughter, Karen Wilmore; four brothers, Adam Wilmore of Bronx, N.Y., Wilbert Wilmore of Rock Hill, Louis Wilmore Jr.

of Daytona Beach, and Willars Wilmore of Savannah, eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Poitier Funeral Home was in 1 charge. King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery Chester, is in charge of local arrangements. Lamar Weeks CLOVER Mr. Lamar S.

Weeks, 78, of 3090 Bush Road died Wednesday, December 5, 2001, at home. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Oakdale Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Buck Malcom officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Savannah, Mr. Weeks was a son of the late Arthur E. Weeks and Sallie Dixon Weeks. He was a 1 101st Airborne paratropper in World War II and was in the battles of Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Eamet Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, Bronze Service Arrowhead, a Purple Heart and the Distinguished Unit Badge with one Oak Leaf.

He was a member of the U.S. Army Calvary Husars and was one of the original Airborne' Test Platoon. He received the Governor's A Award of Excellence for heading the Explorers Troop 10 in Mecklenburg County during the early 1960s. He was a member of Oakdale Presbyterian Church and was a first-degree Mason. He owned the Carowinds Exxon on Carowinds Boulevard in Fort Mill.

Surviving are his wife, Marian G. Weeks; two daughters, Gay Louvie Murphy Stanley, N.C., and Sally Gaddy of Mooresville, N.C.; his sister, Demetris Hartlowe of Savannah; his stepson, John Cooner of Kingsland, his stepdaughter, Carol Rushing of St. Marys, and nine grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford Sons Funeral Home.

The Herald staff Olympic Torch to run through Rock Hill today The Olympic Torch Relay will come through Rock Hill today, starting at 7:50 a.m. at Burns Chevrolet on North Cherry Road. The torch route will head southwest on Cherry, before making its way past Winthrop University on Oakland Avenue and then downtown to City Hall Plaza at 8:51 a.m. The torch's final stop in Rock Hill will be at the Bank of America on Albright Road. Traffic will be blocked briefly at each intersection along the route while the 15-car convoy passes.

That includes a 10- minute window at the corner of Cherry and Oakland from 8:25 a.m. until 8:35 a.m. The section of Black Street in front of City Hall and the York County Library will be blocked to all traffic from 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. for a special Olympic celebration from 8 to 9 a.m.

The event will include patriotic and holiday singing, a presentation by Mayor Doug Echols and an introduction of Rock Hill police officers and firefighters. There will also be a snowman-building contest, with a blanket of snow courtesy of a special effects company from Hollywood covering the plaza. Fort Mill juvenile suspected in burglary FORT MILL Fort Mill police arrested a 13-year-old Fort Mill boy Tuesday after about $500 in video games and CDs were stolen from a unit at Forest Ridge Apartments. The boy was seen in the apartment around noon before he fled, according to Detective Bryan Zachary.

The apartment dweller was in the process of moving into the unit and was not present at the time of the incident. She told police that about $500 in video game cartridges and CDs were missing. An officer on patrol saw a young male matching the description of the suspect before the boy fled into a wooded area at Harris Street Park, according to Zachary. Later, police found the juvenile and discovered he had some of the stolen items in his possession. He later led officers to the area where he had put the rest of the merchandise.

The boy was charged as a juvenile with second-degree burglary and petty larceny. He was released from the Fort Mill jail into the custody of a parent, Zachary said. The case in pending in Family Court. Coroner rules cause of death for Rock Hill girl A final examination of the body a 12-year-old believed to have been raped and murdered by her father was completed Wednesday by the York County Coroner's Office. Coroner Doug McKown said Amanda Cope's death was caused by strangulation and there was evidence of previous physical and sexual abuse.
