It is to be hoped that the specimens of oar Cleveland wit may distance those recently displayed in Detroit on the same subject, which were certainly among tha mott execrable attempts at himor that We remember to hare met with. As the barometer of the weather it alto Tery da eidtdly the barometer of success ia the fair, all those Interested in it watched the indica tions as to rain withgreat anxiety. TJnfor tasately the clouds settled down again for- biddingly, and ae many ware kept at home by their threatening' aspect thai the attend ance was still scanty. Bnt, though as yet failure ia the number of visitors, the fair is signal sucoeis in respect to the extent and Tarietj of articles on exhibition.

We hare already spoken somewhat la detail of the articles ca exhibition in the various depart menu. Many article came ia yesterday and ware added to the already floe display. In the Floial Hall Mr. Herke hat added to the stook of Sowers by a large aad extensive collection of exotics. Mr.

Leonard Case has also increased his variety of specimens by a fine display of dahlias and cut flowers. Mr. Bohmer has on hand a fine aad extensive ex hibitioa of flowers. Fine Art Hall his sot been reinforced largely since we made notice of the articles exhibition there. We regret that our Cleveland photographists, whose collections added so mach to the Interest and beanty of the Art Hall at the State Fair, did not deem it worth their while to send specimens of their workmanship to oar home Fair.

The ioolemanoy of the weather has pre vented the exhibitors in the department of agriealtaral implements from bringing their machines to the ground. The Halls of Farm Products and Domestic Manufactures are well filled. The exhibi tion of Poultry surpasses in extent and qual ity that at the State Fair. The exhibition of Sheep is good. Cattle, too, are well represented.

Several matches came off on the Trotting Course yesterday. The Pacing Match was the only one which was completed. In this Anderson and Boyd oarried off the premi um, their horse winning three heats in five, by the following time, 3:00, and 2:59. Thi Pbax Btxiit 8c bool Eotnri, oa the West Side, hat been closed for tome dayt oa account of the prevalence of small pox ia that vicinity, Hi att- RcSBtxT Oauiaa Stmit. a a Testerday morning, about eae o'clock, cellar of George Faulkner, an Englishmen living at 52 Orange Street, aad keepin a gToeeii ea Prorpect Street, was entered through a small eellar-windcw, and a large amount of money, in gold aad silver, taken therefrom. The maa had been foolish enough to bury hit money, which he estimated, per haps extravagantly, at tome $5,000, in strong box in his cellar almost a foot nnder the surface of the ground, instead of invest ing it, as he might have done, In Uncle Sam1 7-20s. It was the hard earned product his industry, accumulated by slow degrees, and comprised nearly all of his prop erty.

He bad, as he thought, kept the plaoe of hit treasure a secret, bnt the very fact of the robbery shows that it mutt have been discovered. The man states that he heard noise about one in the morning as of some one trying to get In at the back window. Entrance was made at the cellar a board taken from a fence close by to make operations easier. The money, which was eonoealed about a foot under ground, waa all carried off, but nothing else was stolen. The above was written yesterday morning but its publication in our afternoon edition yesterday was omitted by request of the do tective officers in charge of tbe ease.

The Times says Earl Russell, in his speech relative to the iron clads in the Mersey, says the vessels will bs detained even if the existing law is in their favor, and Parliament may be oalled upon to pass measures measures for that purpose. The Directors or the Ureal Eastern have issued a report showing that more oapital must be proviied or th, Company will be disolved. European politics are unimportant Earl Russell has made an important speech on foreign affairs, at Blair Gourie, Scotland.

He referrea at considerable length to tha American question. He justified England in recognising the Confederates belligerents, and answered some of the imputations brought by the people of the North, particularly the speech of Senator Sumner. He also replied to the complaint of the South in regard to the recognition of the blockade, and asserted that, although self interest demanded that England should break it, she prefers the course of honor, it would have been infamous to break it He showed that the Government had not sufficient evidence against the Alabama to detain her until after she Bailed, and ex plained the difEeuluer in the way on interference with such eases. He drew a line between ordinary vessels equipped for war purposes and steam rams, which are ia themselves formed for acta of offenoe, and might be used without ever touching Con federate shores. He asserted that the -was ready to do everything that the duties of neutrality required, everything that is just to a friendly nation, and such as they would wish done to themselves, but wnnld not vi.ld one jot to the menaces of foreign powers.

He complimented tne federal Uovern- ment and Mr. Seward upon the fairness with which they have discussed the mat ters of difference, but said there were others, including Senator Sumner, who had acted differently. He denounced the ef forts of those who sought to oreate trcuble between America and Europe, and with expressions of friendship towards Ameri asserted that all his effort would be to maintain peace. Speaking or rolann Be aeienaea England's position and remonstrated against that of Russia, but did not think England should go to war on the subject. As retrards Mexico he thought that ir tne Mexicans approved of what was being done for them they should be allowed to so.

The London Times referring to the withdrawal of Mr. Mason from England suggests the grounds which have, probably, prompted the Government at Rlohmond to address themselves at last wholly and exclusively to France. The inference is that the withdrawal of Mr. Mason is preliminary to some action on the part of France. Messrs.

Slidell and Mason were always associated in men's minds, and so were, also, the Cabir.at.of Paris and London as regards American affairs. The presence of Mr. Mason in London typifying an unsuccessful appeal to an Anglo French allance has no doubt been considered by the Confederates as chance to the South. It appeared so to the the two powers, and it would not be a scatter of surprise that one of them should hesitate to decide what course to pursue without the other. Now things have changed.

One of these powers has taken position on the Ameri continent, which aotnally enables this poor, harrassed, unrecognised Confederacy to confer a favor. The South, a new neighbor to the distant neutral State to which Mr. Slidell was sent two years ago, now a sort of neutral ally, with a common antagonism Federal power. Can be a wonder, then, that the Confederate politicians desire to free the French Emperor from any shackle that may repress his liberty of action. The appeal of the Confederates is to France, also as proprietor of the Mexican monarchy and a bold challenger of Federal supremacy on the American continent The Paris Journal's Memorial Diplomatique, writing oa the Polish question, denounces strongly the course of England and Austria, and speaks in tones of strong hostility.

The Journal Des Debits also points to the possibility of France being left to settle the question alone by the sword, and points oat that England and Austria would have to pledge themselves to friendly mediation. KENTUCKY GUERRILLAS ACTIVE. LOUISVILLE, October 8. One hundred guerrillas, nnder Captain Richardson, at 2 o'clock, r. mn placed obstructions on the Lebanaa Branch Railroad at New Hope, twenty miles fron the Junction, threw the train off and fired into doing no damage to the --rT8.

captured the train, burned -tj i senger ears, baggage and express car, iui disabled the locomotive, and also robbed the passengers of monsy and olothing, then decamped. Reprota prevail of a guerrilla raid in Sampson and Warren counties, nnder Hughes. They burned the depot at Auburn, on the Memphis branch. Great excitement prevails in all the counties between Murfreesboro and the Tennessee line, which are infested by guerrillas. Major Warten, of the Third Regiment Mounted Infantry, pursued the rebels yesterday from Glasgow and recaptured everything the rebels took at that place.

The report that the rebels robbed the bank at Glasgow is untrue. GREAT FIRE. MILWAUKEE, Oct. 8. A fire broke out at street to-day.
