HAYWARD Ratlboad Collision at Cosssaut About a Doiss Pssaoas Ibjuesd. In onr Wednes day morning issue we stated that a collision had occurred on the Lake Shore Railroad at Conneant, about six o'clock the previous evening. The Conneant Reporter, of the 31st, gives full details of the disaster. It seems that the accommodation train collided with No. 1 freight, doing considerable damage to property.beeides injuring several passengers and men on the accommodation The freight train, going west, numbered some seventy cars and was drawn by two powerful engines, the Conusant" and the Ocelot," the Conneant being ahead.

It is customary for this train, the accommodation and express up, to meet at Conne- aut. Getting in a little ahead of the ac commodation, and being longer than the switch, the freight train was endeavoring to clear the main track when the whistle of the accommodation sounded, the other side of the wooded curve. A flag was im mediately dispatched to give warning, but swing to the shortness of the cur his flsg was not seen until it was too lets to materially check the headway of the train, and its engine, the "Gazelle," ran into the "Conneant" engine with considerable force, disabling both, and scattering broken irons and timbers promiscuously on each side of the track. The head of the Gazelle was nearly on top of that of the Conneant, and the iron monsters gave a fearful em brace, the steam issuing from the fractured flues. The mail and baggage car was pret ty badly sloven np, and ths passenger car had a good many seats broken and displaced.

The persons injured were Loren Gould, A. W. Colman, Kellogg, a brother-in-law of Dr. Fifield, a German woman, George Page, newsboy, George Humphrey, bBggsge-maater, the fireman, and several others, whose names we did not learn. None of the above are dangerously hurt.

As Exoslliht PaojiOT. We are pleased to observe that since the close ef the war the athletic sxercises, which, during its their devotion to sterner pursuits, are sgaia receiving attention. We are especially gratified to noto rmy effort made by the yonng men of onr cities to organize base ball, cricket and boating clubs, and provide thntna-h these media, nleas- ant, healthful and comparatively inexpensive recreation. Tha cnlti.ti- the physical powers is altogether too much overlooked by the young lawyers, ths students, book-keepers and clerks of onr cities. And we applaud every organization of the kind referred to, not only because it affords positive benefit to the health and to the "muscle" of its members, but because in many cases it anpplants billiards, cards, drinking and multiform dissipation.

We shall have mora to say in the future on the utility and necessity of athletic games. The paragraph above has been suggested by the fact that a meeting was held yesterdsy evening, at which a baseball club was organized, which promises to be a most excellent institution. Its officers are as follows: President W. N. Hudson.

JToentno Bulletin. a not a her was to he ly It ty the cabin, WS THE NEW REVENUE CUTTER. TRIAL TRIP OF THE JOHN SHERMAN. A Pleasant and Satisfactory Excursion.

Though the new revenue cutter, John Bhermaa, is not yet wholly. completed, that is, ready for service, it was decided to put her on a trial trip yesterday. The determination perhaps, partly made in consideration of the fact that Hon. John Sherman, whose name the beautiful craft bears, was in the city, and would lend his presence to the company which should be invited to make the pleasure excursion. It was announced that ths steamer would leave at two o'clock, but it was an hour later, just three o'clock, when it steamed out into the lake.

Mr. Kirby, of the firm of Peck A the builders of the cutters, officiated as captain, and Mr. Andrew Fletcher, of the firm of Fletcher, Harrison A North River Iron Works, superintending the movement of ths engines wa aboard. A large number of invitations had been sent out, and a company ranging from one hundred and fifty to two hundred ladies and gentlemen, consisting of some of our first citizens, were aboard. Senator Sherman, with his wife and niece, was present, together with Captain Gilbert Knspp, if the navy, Wallace, Professor in the Naval Academy at Annapolis, and Chief Engineer M.

H. Plankett, who was captured in the Harriet Lane. The enjoyment of the guests seemed to have been specially consulted, so far as the ordering of the weather and lake was concerned. Though almost intolerably hot on board, a refreshing breeze, created by the movement of the boat, prevailed, and made all on board the envy of landsmen and the favorites of fortune. The lake was smooth, and of a deep green color.

The cutter clipt the water like a knife, without motion. The most easily affected stomachs retained their virtue and contents in them. We saw no violent movements or spasms of diaphragms. Not a lace-bonneted beauty on board lost her romantio charm of pres ence by vomiting I On leaving the harbor the cutter bore straight out into the lake, aimless so far as going anywhere was concerned. She soon passed the tug Levi Johnson, whose enterprising captain had started ahead with a load to see the cutter fly at full speed, She, or he, (for how can a he be a she?) continued on for about three- quarters of sn hour, when she put about and headed for the river, with the intention, we suspect of having a race with the screw steamer Pacific, of the Cleveland and Buffalo line, as, indeed, the sequel showed.

While she is approaching the pier, we will give a brief account of the cutter, as she now is, appending fuller statement when she is completed and makes her final trip at the instance of the Treasury Department, for the transaction of the busi ness and the oversight of the concerns of which, primarily, she was built. Ths contract for building at this point two of tha six revenue cutters ordered to be built on tha lakes, was let to Peck and Kir by, the well-known ship-builders of this city, and bears date of February 10, 1865, Work was not commenced on them until a month later. Considering all the circumstances, they have been rushed through, but the work has not therefors been at all slighted. The craft are to-day the pride of the art, and challenge comparison with any specimens of lake-marine architecture. The best material has been used, and it has been used by the beat workmen whom money, if not love, could command, and in the most approved manner known to the ship building profession.

Each of the cut. tors, eiie jonn onerman ana wm. rut es senden, have the following dimensions Length of keel ISO feet. Breadth of beam 1 Depth of hold The engine is a miracle and paragon of mechanism. It came from the North River Works, of Fletcher, Harrison and is No.

47, and that in the Fessenden, No. 43, of this style of engine furnished for western lake boats. The engine in each is 48-inch diameter and 9 foot stroke. The boiler is 9-feet shell and 33 feet long. Ths blowing engine is 12-inch bore and 12 inch stroke.

A pony boiler 6 feet long and of 36-inch diameter, drives a Sewell pump and the blower, and makes steam for heating' the cabin and ward room. The wheels are 25 feet diameter and 8 feet face. The engine is acknowledged to be the finest piece of mechanism ever seen here. It should bs magnificent affair, since it costs $75,000. Peck A Co.

contracted to build ths cutters for $160,000 each, the Government to sup ply the armament and furnish the rooms, The total cost of each will not fall short of $175,000. By this time the Sherman had neared ths port, just as ths Psclfie was steaming out. The former put her wheel to starboard, and cut a splendid circle, thereby allowing the Paciflo to get ths start. She was about a quarter of a mile ahead, when the cutter had got faced about and put on forty ponnds of steam. She flew through the water like a bird through the air, and quickly passed the Pacific, which had shut off steam, de clining the race.

She flew down the lake some four or five miles, when her wheel was again put to starboard and she cut another immense circle, facing about once more in the rear of the propeller, which by this time had limbered np and was scoot ing down the watery plain like a Flora Temple "incarnated" in oak and iron The cutter put on twenty-eight pounds of steam, and in about tea minutes cancelled the quarter-mile distance intervening, and, passing, slid ahead and cut athwart the path of the Pacific The excitement was intense. Everybody aboard shared the ambition of the cutter, had a personal in terest at stake, felt himself to be a man of aha I "I consequence! Who cared whether should bu'st herb'ilerT they could sink in good cause! This wss Rome, this was the triumphal entry, nay, this was the Gre cian games, and the result, the everlasting laurel I A small thing to go to ths bottom, wound in the flag of victory I And so every one went in on his nerve and dignity, and boasted that he had beat the Pacific. We do not wish to disparage ia the least the Pacific She was heavily loaded, but made praiseworthy speed, notwithstanding. We only mean to say that the John Sher man is extra and, with his twin brother Wm. Pitt Fessenden, promises to carry the broom over the lakes.

The propeller Canlsteo was coming up. and of course she had to be beaten, too. For it was part of the afternoon's busi ness to run by steamers. When she discovered "John" taking- after her. liking his looks, (ha is black contraband, and she as white as the driven snow when freshly powdered,) first- instinct was to get away, end she spread nerselt for Sight; bnt it was of no avail.

''John" soon overtook Canistso very gallant, snd passed on. Ths cutter, however, soon put her wheel port, and made another circuit. Engineer Fletcher wished to try bow many turn could make per minute, Boats ordinari make twenty. The Sherman made thirty easily with a pressure of forty-five pounds of steam, and then flew through the water st the rate of eighteen miles sn hour. is claimed that she can be urged to twen knots sn hour, and there is nothing improbable in the claim.

No one has yet been sarlgned to the com of the John Sherman. Captain Gilbert Knspp will be commander of one of two. We understand Mr. M. H.

Plankett will be Chif Engineer of ths Sheraiun. We forgot te mention that Mr. John Morris -it the builder of the magnificent Jull of which reterra iXuhfU it is furnished. ing of Into are to class alone DB. mend II pepsia Messrs.

Smith Cosby do al. the plumbing work on these craft, amount ing to snout $1,000 oa each boat. The magazine is fourteen by seven feet, divided into two rooms seven feet square, for powder and shell respectively. Their workmanship also in the saloons is highly cred itable. If the enjoyment of the trip was on deck.

the "good cheer" was below. Wm. Waller and George Wheaton, from Richards' establishment, served up in admirablo style to the gentlemen, champagne the most sparkling, wines ef the best flavor and spirit and cigars of the choicest brand. Greet is their reward These cutters bear no visible name, nor will they ever. We understand that is the style with Government vessels, as they also have this whim in their code of etiquette: Never to receive persons directly from a dock they must come aboard in a small boat: Thus does ths Government crsft stand on its dignity I But lest the cutter should forget itself, the name "John Sherman," is beautifully engraved oa its rich-toned bell.

The Fessenden is about a week behind the Sherman. Steam was got up on her jut Tuesday. Her trial trip will come off in a week or ten dajs. After a very refreshing and delightful trip of two hours duration, which was also perfectly satisfactory and highly pleasing to the builders as a trial trip, the company waie landed at the lower loot of Superior street, thoroughly gratified and delighted with the excursion. Your regular correspondent refers to the gambling races which took place here last week. As he says, ths Driving Park Asso ciation should not be -held responsible for the hippodrome exhibition.

The officers and members of that Association comprise such men as R. M. N. Taj lor, Dr. J.

T. Ray, James L. Morris, F. W. Huidekoper, and others, whose names are a sufficient guarantee that they will tolerate nothing that is bogus or swindling.

They have laid out one of the finest half-mile tracks in the whole country, with a view to honest and proper amusement, and the Associ ation should not be held accountable for the transactions of those who tried to inaugu rate a series of rambling races, but had their intentions promptly squelched. THURSDAY EVENING, Aug. 31, 1865. The money market Is extremely close, a banker atatlag hta condition to-day aa strapped." wnlch reflects, ss nearly aa can be. ths general sitnation. Depositors are steadily drawing eat their balaaoas, chiefly for adTaaces upon produce, la addition to which there la a pretty free offering of wool and Iron paper, much of which the Bsnks are forced to decline whoa offered by other than regular cus tomers.

The present situation of trade la against an esriy retnra of the enrren-y thus wttedruwa irom the Banks, and aa szteuded perl of stringency seems lueeltable unit as an unkoked for chang. should cconr ia commercial circles. Ziehen ge ht as preytonsly reported, rates continuing, firm at par baying and premium selling. In Cincinnati ths demand for currency Is only moderate, snd the supply abuadaat. Kxchaegs continues to work close, and rates are aim at to 75 premium buying and 1-10 premium selling.

Ia Chicago bslaaoos are getting very low, sad discount houses report a vary close market, ex change Is ia fair tupp'y and rales are quoted at 1-10 discount to par buying aad 1-10 premium sal ling. Gold ruled pretty steady to-day, with rather aa upward disposition, aad the market closed Srmer st lM'-Jam. The demand for easterns Is absorbing oyer half a million of specie dally, bnt be yond this there Is eomparadTely little moreaeat, aad the market seems to bs aansuslly free Irons sseculatlye influence. The Floor and Oraia market I eat suffered a far ther decline to day, but except oa Wheat there was no effect mads upon prices here. The fact Is, this market Is In a peculiarly IsdeptBdeat position at present with regard to other markets, having no greater supply of most atticlas than is woessary to meet the regular wants of enstomers.

Ths stock of flour was hardly syar lower than at present. and millers are not doing more than snffloient to keep pace with their orders, which are ao means large. Prl.es are consequently wall maintained. Wheat is unie tied, and It Is very difficult to dtflne values. There la ao demand exoept for oar lotei and this is vsry Prices, koweyer, were lower to day, and the market sloeed beery and weak.
