the folio win; resignation was handed in by Lieutenant John W. Francis, who has since enlisted in seme Regiment in your city the OjTicert and JTauiert of Company Firtt Kegimtnl, Stcond Brigade, O. R. M. Believing it to be my duty to obey the call ef my country and enter the ranks of Its volunteer army, I heteby tender to you my resignation of the ofSoe of Second Lieutenant, hoping to be of more benefit to my eonntry as a private in active service than in the position I have heretofore occupied with you.

I shall always entertain towards you feelings of the highest respeot and esteem for the honor conferred, and the confidenoe shown ia electing me to the office I hereby resign. Nothing less than an overwhelming sense of the great danger now menace-is onr common country, and the solemn conviction that it is my personal duty to assistin. subduing a wicked rebellion, would for a moment tempt me to sever the tie which has bound me to you, and to form another, where although 1 trust I shall be of more service to my country, I can never hope to find the pleasure and happiness I have enjoyed with you. And should onr country need your brave hearts and strong arms, I trust you will not hesitate to respond to her call, but that where the battle rages fiercest I shall meet you, where we will either conquer her enemies or die in her defence. (Signed) JOHN W.
