Reason demanded for lower vets' pay Orville Allen ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO Illinois congressmen, including powerful House Speaker Dennis Hastert, want the outgoing secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs to explain by Jan. 5 why Illinois veterans reportedly receive among the lowest disability pay in the country.

Rep. Lane Evans, the top Democrat on the Veterans' Affairs Committee, has been getting members of Illinois' House delegation to sign a letter he plans to send Monday to outgoing Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi, Evans spokesman Geoffrey Collver said Friday. "Evans is concerned about this important issue and wants to see the veterans of Illinois receive the benefits that they do deserve," Collver said. "They deserve a fair shake in the process just like anyone According to an analysis of federal records by the Chicago Sun-Times, Illinois veterans on average received $6,802 in 2003, which put them at 50th place out of 52 states and territories in the average amount of disability pay. Hastert, a Republican, has signed the letter and said he also wants a VA study that would show why disability pay varies so much from state to state and recommend a system that's more equitable.

"Veterans in Illinois are on the short end of the stick on this," Hastert said Thursday. "We want a uniform way of doing this. It's only fair." Democratic Senator-elect Barack Obama, who will serve on the Veterans Affairs Committee, said he wants the newly appointed VA secretary to come to Illinois and meet with veterans who have a hard time getting disability benefits. Principi had agreed to come to Chicago before his resignation was announced, but Obama said it was more important for the new secretary, Jim Nicholson, to speak with Illinois veterans. "We want the person who is going to be in charge over the next several years coming in with a clear attitude that this is a problem that needs to be solved," Obama said.
