H. Johnson, a one-armed THE PROPELLER GEORGIAN. Suspicions Men at Collingwood, Canada Suspicions Men at Collingwood, Canada---Gun Carriage, Canister, Grapeshot, Found in their Possession. Th Toronto Globc.ot December 5th, gives the following account of men and things connected with the mysterious propeller Georgian, which we re-print below, as the subject is of local ai well as general interest Some time in the early portion of last week a number of men arrived at Colling-wood by the Northern Railway, and took up their quarters at the Railway hotel. They remained there for a day or two, daring which time they acted in a manner so peculiur as to excite the suspicions of the anthoritiea.

They eave no satisfac tory account of why or for what purpose they were there, not engaged in any open business, considerable excitement and curiosity was occasioned as to who or what they were. T'ie propeller Georgian, of which so much has already been said, was expected to arrive at Col-lingwood, and the only conclusion that could be arrived ai was that these men were waiting for the purpose of joining her. They had in their puusesiion verv little freight or baggage, and this constated of one or two boxes wnic they seemed, to protect and watch with more care and in terest tnan if they contained articles ol a simple and proper nature. These boxes were kept in the bed rooms or some ol tne party, and were never without some one or two of the men near them during mel times some of the party invariably remain ed in the rooms with the boxes, and kept close watch that none of the servants around the house or other persons could have an opportunity of examining them. These circumstances being communicated to the authorities, it was decided to make an inquiry into the case.

Accord ingly on Wednesday last the custom house officials at Collingwood seized the boxes, and on examination they were found to contain a gun-sarriage, with canister, grape shot, for Impounder guns. These were at once taken possession ol by tne auuion ties and are still in their hands. The party of men shortly after left the flM.o, aui to Crtnrd.y had not ratarn. ed, and no information of their whereabouts had been receive.d The Georgian is hourly expected at Collingwood, and the suspicion is, the former circumstances connected with the vessol being taken into consideration, that these men were awaiting her, and that the articles were lor her use. lip to a late hour on Saturday night the Georgian had not arrived.

We believe it is the intention of the authorities to search her and watch the movements of her crew closely as soon as she arrive THE ADJOURNED BAR MEETING. Resolutions of the Cuyahogn County Bar in Reference to the Death of Leonard Case, Esq. The committee, Messrs. Starkweather Backus, Siddon, Kelley and Bishop, ap pointed at the Bar Meeting on Thursday, to report resolutions expressing the sentiment of the Cuyahoga County Bsr in re' ference to tho death of Leonard Case, reported yesterday morning, through their Chairman, Hon. S.

Starkweather, to the adjourned meeting as follows The Hon. Leonard Case, a distinguished citizen of this city and or tnis Mate, Dorn on the 29th of July, 17S6, for many years sn active member of this Bar, died on the 7th of December, 1S64, at his residence in this city at an advanced age. The Court and members of the Bar, deaire to have recorded in a permanent form, the testimony of their love and veneration for his character and the expression of their sorrow for the loss of one who has so long befriended them, by his courtesy and kindness, and who has so often aided them by his wise counsels and correct judgment, and who in his practice at the bar, and in all the relations of life was an example worthy of tbe imitation of all. For nearly half a century he has been identified with tbe growth and prosperity of Cleveland, and his fostering influence has beon displayed in the beauty of its streets and avenues, and especially in those ornaments, whicA have given to it the appellation of the "Forest City." As a prominent and leading member of theOhio Legislature in its early legislationf his influence was felt in the enactment of impcrtant laws as in originating schemes for internal improvement, which has made Ohio, in population and resources, already the third State in the Union, and especially has the State been much indebted to him, for a system of taxation which has, at all times, sustained its credit, with so much honor, at home and abroad. To no other man is due a greater debt of gratitude from the inhabitants of the Western Reserve.

For many years he stood as the agent and friend between the original proprietors of the soil, and the immigrants who settled upon them, faithful to the former, he was kind and lenient to the latter. From his position he was made more familiar with titles than any one else his knowledge and assistance were ever proffered to the innocent holder, and sternly refused to the unjust disturber. Although afficted all his life with incessant bodily pain, he performed with untiring industry his daily labors. He was distinguished in all his transactions for the greatest exactness, and the most scrupulous integrity. But the kind neighbor, the good friend, the wise counsoller, the honest man is gone.

Bv the wise and ignorant, by the rich and'the poor, his loss will be alike deplored in the wide circle of those who knew him. For a lasting testimony of bis virtues end of the esteem and veneration with which we shall cherish his memory be it Resolved, That the Court of Common Pleas be requested to enter a record of the proceedings of this meeting, and that copy thereof bo sent te tho surving son of the deceased, with the expressionof our warm-eat sympathy. Resolved, That the members of this Bar will attend, in a body, tho funeral of this deceased brother, this day at eleven o'clock. The Cb-eret Valiet Oil ProrERTr. T.

H. A.B.,writingfromOil Creek, thus expatiates on the Cherry Valley oil property The Company are making preparations for thoroughly developing their territory with the least possible delay. An engine of sufficient capacity is now on the way from New York, and work is to be commenced on the 19th of the presont month. What I have before said in reference to-undeveloped or partially developed lands is apilicable to this. One well may not succeed, but that should not discourage the adventurers, a second, or at most a third attempt has, in the majority of instances, amply repaid the outlay and yielded a handsome profit whilst, should a good well be struck within a mile of the Company's property, the value of all the land the neighborhood at once appreciates at an astonishing rate.

Experienced Croek operators, with whom I conversed on the subject, and who I knew had no interest in tho matter, assured me that the Cherry Valley property was, in their estimation, a good thing, and promised well. A number of leading business men of this city have taken an interest in it and are pushing it forward. And here it is in place to answer a question, askod sometimes on the Creek as to the subscription of (he stock. The par value is $10 per share, but the present subscription price is $3, without being subject to assessment. Tho rato will soon be higher.

Fukebal or Leosaed Case, Esq. A largo number of our most prominent citizens were yesterday, at the residence of the late Leonard Case, to attend the funeral services, which were conducted by the Rev. V. H. Goodrich.

The Cleveland Bar attended in a body. The following gentlemen acted as pall-bearers Judge S. J. Andrews, John A. Foote, S.

Williamson, T. M. Kelley, Philo Scovi'lc, S. Starkweather, T. P.

Handy, and Georgo Mygatt, At twelve o'clock, noon, the procession moved to the old cemetery, where the body was buried by tbe side of the members of nhn hflvs pnnA before. FIRE ALARM TELEGRAPH IN PITTSBURGH. BUESsT. The Cleveland of Fire to be Introduced into Pittsburgh. bnr-li.

The Pittsburgh Chronicle, speaking cf the Fire Alarm System, and the visit of the Committee from that city to our own, says The Committee appointed to visit Cleve land for the purpose of examining into the working of the Fire Alarm Telegraph thre, arrived home on Saturday night, highly pleased with their trip. They speak in the highest terms of the simplicity and effectiveness of Mr. Hill's invention, and as it can be introduced for a little over $3,000 we have no doubt whatever of its being put up. The battery which works the telegraph is composed of one hundred cups, and the instruments and alarm apparatus are encased in boxes about two teet long end one 1006 wiae. The alarm bell io similar to those nsed in clocks, and is operated by pressing, thus uniting the currents of electricity, and causing the hammer to strike upon the bell according to tho desire of.the operator.

E. W. Colgan, Superintendent of the Union Telegraph line, by invitation, thoroughly examined the construction and manner of working the instruments, and expressed himBelf as perfectly satisfied ot its reliability, while for simplicity of operation it was perfect. From tbiB the Com mittee visited Engine House, 3, where they were afforded an opportunity of witnessing the practical operation of the system The alarm was given for No. 1 to "come to No.

3, a distance of about a mile, and in two minutes and a half from the time the alarm was made, they were on the ground. o. 5, located on Phelps street, nearly two miles distant, was next called, and reached the rround in seven minntns. fCn. 2.

In. cated on Champlsin street, distant about a mno, was tnen called, and arrived two minutes, in all instances wagons were used instead of the steamers, owing to the fact that the streets were covered with mud to the depth of several incbaa, but they wore sufficient to show the reli ability of the alarm. The Committee were very handsomely treated during tbeir stay, sod returnod homo -tvcll pleased with their Visit. Neighborhood Items. STARK COUNTY.

CoxnnzKCB Max. The Stark County democrat says Some weeks since, an individual profes sing to be taking orders for an Eastern wnoiesaie nou3e. entered Gibbs Mil ler's store, in this town and wished ti ob tain an order. Joan UiODS imme diately b'juirht the horse Tor $55, and Mr, Young, of Pike Township, took the buggy for $45 just $100. and cheap enoueh. And dear enough too, for on Tuesday of last week, tne real owuer ol tbe property, man near Wellsville, Ohio, appeared and reclaimed the property. Tho horse and buggy had been hired by the thief who stole mem. This same "confidence man" is reported to have got a heavy order for shoes from Robert Wilson, of Mapleton, and to have some two nundred dollars advance.

Probably others have been "taken in" in the same manner. Lvcicm Established. We must congrat ulate the people of Canton on the success ful organization of a Lyceum in that city. It is in the hands of the leading citizens the place, and therefore gives promise living a good wholesome life during winter. The facts in the case are these i A very poor and very ignorant Ger man living In Brooklyn, by the name of John Eitateiner, was drafted in the late draft, who, being greatly exercised by his ill-fortune, and casting about for snccor, got most woefully humbugged and "uck-ed," by one Joseph a. Brewn, a saloonkeeper on the corner of Seneca and' Frank fort streets. The German wanted to get an exemption from service, and this Brown told him that, on consideration of one hun dred dollars paid to kim, he would use his influence with tie Board, and procure the exemption. Overjoyed with this prospect, the poor ignorant man bestirred himself to get the money, and at length succeeded in raising it, whereupon he deposited it in the hands of said Brown, fifty dollars being in money and the other half in two notes.

Of course Brown kept as far away from the Board of Examiners as possible. After the lapse of several even the poor dupe mistrusted something, and presented himself before the Board, was ex amined, and exempted on the ground of pnysical disability, being a puny, sickly man, and having a wrUt which, once broken, was not properly set and has never been serviceable since. He then stated the case of Brown's villany, whereupon that knave was summoned, who twisted himself up in a not of lies, in the unravelling of wmeh, by sharp cross-questioning, it camo out that he had received the fifty dollars and the two notes. The money and notes were at length secured, and returned to their rightful owner on Thursday night. Commissioner then went and after giving Kitstoiner a little wholesome, pungont advice, dealt out thunderbolt or two of indignation and ven geance on the head of Commissioner Eirkpatrick suspects that much of such kind of knavery is going on covertly, indeed he is now tracing up two three similar cases, and he is in.dead earnest in his efforts against all scoundrels who are imposing on the ignorance of men that are drafted.

xooa. This book is not one of that series of boy biographes so scathingly and so ustly assailed by Gail Hamilton in a recentnumbcr of the Atlantic Monthly. Its author. Headley, is well-known as an able and practiced writer, and its hero, the ncble Mitchell, is one whose memory should be kept warm in every American heart. The book is a detailed and accurate history the dead hero, and should be put into the hands of every American youth.

We have no soldier or statesman whose life and exam plo in ail respects oau be more safely commended for imitation to the American youth than that patriot so faithfully delineated here. The book ia handsomely gotten up by Wm. H. Appleton and is sold by J. B.

Cobb Co. AcAOEiiT or Music. Owing to the keen, cutting air and tho rival attractions at Brainard's Hall, there was not a very large house out to seo the rendition of the startling drama of the "Hillside" and that entitled "Felon's Dream." But notwithstanding this fact tho3o plays were well and gave gcnoral satisfaction. A good Saturday night's bill is presented for this evening, viz. tho drama called "Lucretia Borgia; or The Poisoner," with Miss Denin in the leading character, to conclude with arepetition of last night's afterpiece "The Felon's Dream, or.

Jack Shepard in France." The stars appear in a variety of characters in this last performance. Dupbez and Greek's Minstrels. The first entertainment of a aerios of three was given last night, in Brainard's Hall. A full house greeted the re-appearance of this favorite troupo, and manifested their pleasure in repeated and uproarious bursts of laughter, cheers and ipplause. Negro melodies and manners will never grow out of taste; there is something in the songs so tender and deep, and in tho dialogues and general action and carriage of tho ebony parties something so outlandish and ridiculous, yet good-natured, that a good troupe will always me6t with very decided success.

Of all the troupes of nogro minslrols wo have seen and heard, Duprez and Green's is by all odds tho best. The corpB of performers is largo, and the entertainments are so varied and well sokctcd, that there is sure to be soinothing, eye, many things, in the performance to suit the special fancy of every one. This troupo give two more entertain ments, one to-night and the last on Mon day might. Wo adviao all lovors of fun to go and see the Police Court.
