'-war. for In Ere. .1. 7riT The Hall'vaatrowJid again, hut niglit, to hear the fourth lectnra of the thus far popular and excellent course. The streets were) rendered aa alcppy by the oluging taia of nearly the entire day, and tha wind lilew so furiously, that the prospect of full house was misty and dubious.

But despite all.drawbaclts the distinguished anther ahd lecturer Was greeted with an audience the 'mbstintenigent and' fashion able the city could give. The subject cf the lecture was "Our War and which was treated in a manner characteristic of the lecturer. He commenced by giving the anecdote ef Grout's -firing a plitol when trht two years old, aed th drubbing be gave an English boy, when but ten years of age, be cause the English lad called Washington a traitor. lie then, gars, in a very pop ular and attractive style, a rapid summary of the great events in which (xeneral brant has figured aa a private or publie character, tracing him through the Mexican war, through the obscure places of humble, pri vate life, and then following with glow in? words his splendid career from Belmont to PeUr. burgh.

The narrative was interspersed with anecdote of. contrabands, eulogies -on Grant's worthy co-actors, witticism which brought out cheer on cheer from the house, and solemn, ekquent statements of fact and truth which hushed the Hall and stop ped the We felt all through the pleasing delivery of this" lecture; what a -pity it was this lecjure. wsa not delivered everywhere through the North, without interruption for nubt, before the oloolion. it was successful as the most perfect "stump-or. tory" could be, and yet it literary excel minds in the" assembly could not help being He bit off the peace iod-armistIoe ele ment so felicitously in several passages, that the houae were convulsed in a degree almost painful to see and fearful to contem plate.

The public, that large portion of whom were present last evening, will feel thank the Lecture Committee for the pleasure procured by their good sense and sagacity in securing the services of Rov. 8. J. C.Abbott, who will always be warmly welcomed by the citizen, of Cleveland. REcwmxo- paa Uasoock'h Cotrs.

We desire to call special attention to the ad vertisement of Provost Marshal Nasb, which appears in this morning's paper, stating the conditions of recruiting for the First Cjrps, now being recruited under General Hancock. This corps will be the Tenth Legion, the Imperial Guard of the whole army. It i to be composed en tirely of veteran soldiers, enlisted for not less than one year. T.eoruits will be furnished transportation to Washington, and will be paid a spejial bounty of .00 by the Government. Recruit are constantly offering and we learn that the corps is be ing very rapidly filled up.

We call tho attention of District and Sub-distriot reoruiting committee to this rare opportunity, to obtain men. The corp will be a most honorable one, and many who refuse to gi as substitutes will gladly join it. The government oilers a bounty of $300, which, with tho addition of a township bounty, will forma hand some reward to the recruit. A large num bar of veteran soldier in every sub-dis trictof the State, might, with a little efiorl. be induced to re-enlitt.

Lot township committees take time by the foreiock. We shall undoubtedly have another draft be fore the first of April, and it will be a cap ital idea to be raising our quotas now. Editor to of Leadeb: It is xnown to many of jour readers that an enterprise was started more than a year since, by a few ladies, to pro vide for the temporary relief of deserving strangers who were found in distress among us. This enrt has been attended with much success, and a considerable number of such persons have been met in their extremity and helped to a decent living or to home- in other pieces. The experience of the year has shown the urgent necessity of some more general and permanent or ganization to do this work of chtrity. in ladie of this city who are interested in such a cause, axe therefore invited to meet at the Parlors of tbe Bton Church on Friday afternoon, at two o'clock, to take part in organizing a Protestant Home for Friendless Stranger in the eity of Cleve land." Editoes Leadeb: It will doubtless be in teresting to some of yonr resdera to learn of the discovery of oil in this region of Ohio. Some persons engaged in sinking a shaft for coal on tbe ttrm of Mr. Robert B. Hamilton, last week, struck a vein of what one of the workmen (a Frenchman) called "pure car. bonic," at the depth of twenty feet.

This was on Friday evening last. On Saturday morning the water was covered with petroleum in considerable quantities. Paper sat urated with it burntd with a brilliant flame. There ha been quite a number of visit or, many of them carrying off samples of lie on. company nas oeen lormed with the intontion of seeking oil in the vicinity of this frrm, and to-day (Monday) Mr.

Hamilton ha caused another shaft to be commenced, and to-night tho prospect is aa favorable a at the first. There is no doubt in tbe minds of those familiar with the oil business, of the entire suacesg of Mr, and some have said unhesitatingly that they never saw as clear a SANDY. Moxa's Relief Festival.
