"Broke out in a New Spot!" "Indications" In East Cleveland. Locating Oil Lands in Independence. EXCITEMENT AT ROCKY RIVER. Real Estate "Looking Up." The Speculators on the Qut Vive. Within the last month, and more espe- ially within a week or two, the attent on of speculators in petroleum in all parts of the country have been turned, with singu lar and extraordinary unanimity various portions of Cuyahoga county, as affording excellent "indications" for oil.

The oil excitement which has been agitating the country has overflowed its fountain head, the Venango county and French Creek region in Western Pennsyl vania, and is now spreading over all parts of the West. Lands In that locality have boen driven up to fabulous and romantic prices; and speculators, reasoning justly mat tnere is no reason wny oil-wens snomo oe connnea to mat particular reg.on, nave i v. I "1m lul" men, in New York and Pittsburgh, as wcil ss in this city, have been turned of late to the "indications" offered in certain locali ties in this county, and, by a most remark able coincidence, tbe oil excitement has broken out simultaneously in at least three ifferent townships in this county at near ly the same time Bast Cleveland, Bock- port, and Independence In East Cleveland, the best prospect for oil appears to be along tbe creek which empties into the lake near the residence of James Fitoh, Esq. The "indications" are stated to be mainly in the geological form ation of the rocks in the bank and valley of the creek precisely the same commin gled shale and sandstone as that of the oil- regions in Pennsylvania. On the farm of B.

C. Smith, near the ro running from the village of East Cleveland to Col lamer, a gas spring been found, which burns with great force and regularity when lighted, and would supply half Cleveland witfc gas. Tbe spring also emits, as we are informed, a very distinct and powerful smell of crude petroleum. The surface of the water near is also quite dily, and the most experienced oil-hunters think they have a sure thing here. A company has been formed in this city which has quietly leased abut two hundred and fifty acres of land up and down the creek from this point, and which proposes to sink a well at onoe at this spot, and probably to bore for oil in other places near.

They are now procuring the neces sary engine and machinery, and will com mence work immediately, We hear also of indications near Moll- rath's tavern ia the township of Bast Cleve land, and learn that eager oil-hunters are now prospecting up every ravine in search of indications. In Bockport the excitement is also great and on the increase. Similar indications, geological, gaseous, and olfactory, are found that township, and especially on the Mastick farm, at the point where the Lo rain Street plank road crosses Booky Biver, some three or four miles from its mouth, and about ten from this city. Here arc found gas springs, oily smell, shale rock, Ac, Ae. Great excitement it prevalent in that quarter, two rival companies, formed in this city, being in the field with offers.

One company offers to lease all the land in that section, paying oneveighth of the yield in oil to the owners. Another offers one-eighth of the yield of oil for a lease of one-half the several farms. But the owners are sturdily waiting for better offers. Meantime the fever runs higher and high er, and prospectors are swarming along the Rocky Biver. Sunday was a day of peculiar excitement, the best offer for the lend yet made having been tendered on that day.

An agent for a company at Oil Creek has been at work hunting up indications theru nd has returned to Oil Creek to report. Many private individuals are also busily engaged in hunting for oil Vi also hear that most excellent indica tions fur oil have been found in the deep ravine of Tinker's Creek, near its junction with the Cuyahoga river, in the township of Independence and Bedford. We learn that a very prominent and successful busi ness man of Pittsburgh, of large experience in the oil business, has been in these town ships during the past three or four weeks locating and leasing a largo amount of oil land, which he intends to operate immcdi- tely beard yesterday, also, of the opera tions of an agent for a firm in New York city, largely engaged in the oil business, who has been busily at work during the last three weeks in leasing lands along the valleys and ravit.es of streams in thiB section, under pretence of wishing te use them to pasture sheep. Tbe transparency this pretext is easily seen In Parma they have also been struck with the oil-fever. A well has beu sunk about one hundred feet.

The unlucky diggers have struek not oil, but a rock, which, unlike that which Moses struck, won't even yield water, much less oil 1 We seem pre-doomed to an immense oil exoitement. The lucky owners oi larms where there are "indications," will doubtless lease them to speculators, high figures, who will sell them to other speculators at higher figures, and so it will Should the whole thing prove a fail ure, like that in Mecca, and in dozens of other places which had the oil-fever iu 1880, the bubble will burst, and somebody will lose most fearfully. Should it be sue cessful, it will be, to quote President Lin coin's classicism, a big thing, not only for towns named, but for Cleveland. But behooves our citizens to bear steadily in on to A to to-day, is tor ers, is jury ness the mind the strong probality that it will not I acter prove successful, and to resist all tendency undue and excessive excitement. But on Wednesday night last, Deputy Sheriff Whitney, who had his sus picions, looked down that way, and attach ed $300 worth of goods which this ''firm' had purchased on order from Strong A Armstrong, and returned them to the latter firm. On investigation Mr. Whitney learned that very large purchases had been made on order, on Friday previous, and had been delivered to "Clark A and he also found that both goeds and "Com pany had melted away like a morning mist, and were nowhere to be found, Officers are on the scent of these knaves, and it is hoped they will soon be arrested.
