Another great battle bas been fought, and our arms have again bne'i crowned with victory grand and decisive. Early on the morning of the 19th the rebels massed their forces upon our extreme left and made a furious attack upon the position held by the First Division of General Crook's command, surprising and capturing the pickets and dashing into camp before their advance was known. This was about two' hours before daylight, and while the greater part of our forces were sound asleep in their tents. The First Division, however, were rallied and formed, or such part of it as had not been captured at the first onset, and fell back slowly, disputing every inch of ground. On account of the darkness it could not then be ascertained what the force of the enemy was or their design, but the whole line was aroufed and got into position as quickly as poEEible to resist a general assault.

The Seventh Division formed and went to the left of the first to check any attempt at flunking. It soon became apparent that the robe Is had sent a heavy force to turn our left flank and to get in our rear if pos sible. Our line had been formed but a short time when the tremendous pressure of a superior force caused the First Division to give way and thraw the Second into confusion. The rebels took a battery at their first charge and turned the guns upon our lines doing considerable damage. The sixth and ninth corps were attacked in a short timq and the battle became general.

The advantage that the rebels trained at first and the giving wav of a part of- our lines, gave them an idea that they had- gained the day. lhey came on shouting me nenas and DgttUntr with terrible det- lperation. aiowty our entire line was forced back, leaving the ground covered with our kill- ea and wounded another battery had been captured and it seemed as if everything was lost. About noon, hewever, the enemy were checked and the tide of battle began to turn. In several places our men bravely charged and suceeeded in retaking one battery that we had lost in the morning.

At this time General Sheridan arrived at thescene of action. He rode along the lines, infusing a new spirit into our difcouraged lines, and urging on the men by ins own fearless example. Until 4 clock in the afternoon the bit- tie raged fearfully, but with steady success r.n our part, when tho rebels at last gave way entirely, andleftin a state of complete dUorder, closely followed by our cavalry and infantry. A number of the guns taken were heavy Parrotts of long; range, that had been used on ns during the day with terrible effect. Altogether, it was the moetsaneuinary and important battle ever fought in this valley, and snows the supremacy of our arms under circumstances in which, nine times out of ten, an army would have been annihilated. During the hardest part of the battle a largo co umn of the enemy made repeated charges upon the 5th U. S.

Battery, but were as olten repulsed by the deadly grape and canister, till not men enough were left to man toe guns. Tbe Captain command in 2 the finally, with terns in his eyes, said, "Boys, give them one more charge double-shotted, and then we will leave; it is getting too hot for us." It was the last order he gave. The rebels made an other furious charge. The captain fell, and but three gunners were ieit unhurt. The infantry support helped them movo part of the battery by hand, and the remainder was taken.

It may not be proper to speak of indi viduals, but we eannot refrain from speak ing of the almost reckless bravery of Col. H. B. Hayes, commanding the 2d Division, and the cool daring of Lieutenant Colonel Comly, commanding the 23i O.V.I. Xo better officers can be found in the service.

While brave and daring on the field they bold the respect of those they command. They never ack the men to go where they will not lead. "When we regained the ground that we had lost it was found that the rebels had stripped -our dead and wounded of pants and shoes in almost every instance, and even the wounded that ell into their bands had been deprived of a gret part of their clothing. It bas often been denied by sympathizers that the rebels do these things but we know hat we have seen. Since the battle we have been occupying our old position.

The cavalry nave been moving about a great deal, and a great many rumors are afloat about large captures of prisoners and lores, but I can learn nothing definite. The weather is very cold and we suller some on that account. Our eyes are now turned with some anx iety to the approaching contest in the ortn. YY nope our mends will not de sert us at the ballot box, while we are en during the dangers and fatigues of the field and camp. We have suQered everything during tbe past campaign, but while starving on the Lynchburg raid, or marching many weary miles uiider an almost tropical sun or shivering in these oold, October winds, our hearts have been, and are sua true to me great cause.
