quarterback (Pat Ryan) most important thing is that they can and do contribute They have experience They give good leadership It (age) doesn't matter to Kotite admitted that if someone had come to him last week and said Green would catch six for 114 yards he'd of said that's an awftil lot he knew his assignments They (the Steelers) neglected him over the middle and Jim (McMahon) got him the points away from being 0-4 The offense has scored just five touchdowns in four games turned over the ball seven times (after 14 turnovers last season) and Jeff Hostetler has to be looking over his shoulder at Phil Simms Still they haven't played a division game yet and the talent is there Rodney Hampton (104 yards in a 13-10 win over the Browns) is a franchise back when healthy although he did ftimble on a first-and-goal at the 1 And Lawrence Taylor had two sacks Sunday 2- San Francisco (2-2) not Steve Young's faulL When Harry Sydney is your best running back what can you expect? Still the defense plus Jerry Rice and John Taylor both instrumental in Sunday's 27-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams should carry them to the playoffs 3 Los Angeles Raiders (2-2) Awftil against Houston on the road overpowering on defense at home against Denver and Indianapolis then blah against the Falcons on Sunday Can't play the run-and-shoot 4 Miami (2-2) Don Shula got his 300th win but injuries and holdouts have hurt Great Expectations 1 (tie) Dallas and Phoenix each 2-2 Both are young the Cards don't have a quarterback and the Cowboys get the Giants at home next week in a pivotal game for both 3 Kansas City (2-2) The losses were to New Orleans and Houston Only a game behind Denver and should close Green Sunday It was green Sunday in the NFL: Gaston Green carried for 127 yards and three touchdowns for the Broncos against the Chargers Eric Green caught eight passes for 158 yards for the Steelers against the Eagles Roy Green signed last Wednesday caught six passes for 114 yards for the Eagles against the Steelers Tim Green had fbur tackles including 1V4 sacks for the Falcons against the Raiders Harold Green carried nine times for 40 yards fbr the Bengals against the Redskins Darrell Green' had four tackles and knocked down a pass fbr the Redskins Seattle's Jacob Green had three tackles Kotite was asked to rate his team on a scale of one to 10 around a he said after a few seconds in thought can get better I'm not going to tell you five or six We're 3-1 1 think we can do a better job on offense Yesterday (Sunday) I thought the defense could have done better against the run in the first Kotite said he planned to start Roy Green at wide receiver Monday night Green 34 was signed last week to replace the injured Calvin Williams He caught six passes for 114 yards against the Steelers Kotite said he had no problem with playing his trio of Green 32-year-old McMahon and played against the Chiacgo Bears and San Francisco 49ers 2 Detroit (3-1) is 3-0 with Barry Sanders who sat out the 45-0 loss to the 'Skins on opening night On Sunday he ran for 179 yards in the 33-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts (0-4) Next week the Lions play another winless team in Tampa Bay The four losses have been by a combined total of 13 points 3 Philadelphia (3-1) With Randall Cunningham this wouldn't have been a surprise But Jim McMahon has stayed heBlthy and has been more effective than he's been since 1985 the often awesome defense has carried them when it's had to and Rich Kotite has been rookie coach of the quarter-season 4 (tie) Cleveland and New England each 2-2 It's not rare for teams with new coaches to get off to decent starts but consider the Pats were 1-15 last year and the Browns 3-13 Well one of Cleveland's wins was against New England 6 Denver (3-1) sort of After 5-11 this is a good start Last year was the result of injuries This results may be due to weak opposition Seattle and San Diego Help! 1 Indianapolis (0-4) Ron Meyer usually starts slow but the omens are bad the TV cameras are now catching Bob Irsay (6-24 in September since moving from Baltimore) instead of Art Model! and A1 Davis Nobody to protect Jeff George or open holes for Eric Dickerson (17 yards 13 carries on Sunday) is trouble asking the wrong Meyer replied when asked about his job security own the club" 2 Cincinnati (0-4) This shouldn't be a surprise an odd-numbered year which is when the Bengals miss the play-offt and Sam Wyche goes off on tantrums The biggest problems are on defense and Wyche has a point for irate fans life outside football 3 Tampa Bay (0-4) Four losses 13 points means they're just bad enough to lose 4 San Diego (0-4) When you fire your offensive coordinator a week into the season He Hum 1 New York Giants (2-2) The Super Bowl champs are 10 points away from being 4-0 and eight By DAVE GOLDBERG The Associated Press A quarter of the season is over and everything is normal in the NFL How could it be otherwise when the New England Patriots (2-2) doubled their 1990 victory output with Sunday's 24-20 upset of the Houston Oilers (3-1)? Then the unwritten rule that says three AFC Central teams must finish between 9-7 and 7-9 a good reason the Oilers did not get offto a 4-0 start that amazing?" asked Patriots coach Dick MacPherson after his team moved 83 yards in the final 1:51 for the winning touchdown Hugh 34-yard pass to Greg McMurtiy No not amazing just the NFL With three quarters of the season left here is the state of the league: Th Superpowers 1 Washington (4-0) is off to its best start since 1982 and 1983 and the Redskins went to the Super Bowl both times The Redskins are hard to figure because Joe Gibbs-coached teams usually start slow and finish strong And are the a shutout or shootout team? They have shutout wins over Detroit (45-0) and Phoenix (34-0) but beat Dallas 33-31 and Cincinnati 34-27 Shootout is more likely which means Mark Rypien must refrain from throwing interceptions against good defenses He'll face one Monday night when the Philadelphia Eagles come to town 2 Buffalo (4-0) scored 87 points in home wins over the Dolphins and Steelers and just 38 on the road They might have been in trouble Sunday if Tampa Bay coach Richard Williamson opted for a field goal with the Bucs trailing 10-7 and two feet from the goal line with eight minutes left in the game The Bills won 17-10 Note: Scott Norwood missed another field goal at Tampa Stadium The last one he missed at Tampa cost the Bills the Super Bowl Warning: Bruce Smith is due back next week 1 Pleasant Surprises 1 New Orleans (4-0) Three reasons the Saints are unbeaten The defense has given up just three touchdowns in four games two others came on interceptions: Sam Mills the 5-footr9 linebacker is probably the defensive player of the quarter-season and the return of Bobby Hebert has stabilized the quarterback spot best team we've played this says Minnesota's Wade Wilson after the 26-0 win on Sunday Wilson has already 7194 Powerful 35-amp motor Drills and drives screws into wood metal brick and concrete "Jackhammer Drilling Action" for masonry drilling 0-2800 rpm QUANTITY JHOPNOWi Just say Itr DISTRIBUTORSHIP PAY PHONES CAN NOW BE OWNED NO SELLING REQUIRED WILL NOT INTERFERE WITH PRESENT EMPLOYMENT Honest local person to own pay phones No selling no overtiesd Must have $23000 to $73000 secuied 100 Excellent for person wsnting to start part-time and build into hiH-time Excellent first year earnings Best one man business ever This could make you Independent This is first lime bonafide offer If you are not sincere about owning your own business or do not meet the above financial requirements let's not waste each other's time For a personal interview call Pay Phones Inc not affiliated with today through Wednesday 900 AM to 9 00 PM 1-800-933-0025 BELLEFONTE 117 Water St Moh-TVhm 730n4pm Fri Sal m4pm Sun 10am4piR STATE COLLEGE 1120 LCategt An Man rrlTJOam-Spm Sat am4 pm Sun 10am-4pm 4.
