'Be your best' Student-athletes receive lessons in leadership at IHSAIESA summit By DAN CARDEN Pantagraph staff It was a far cry from math class. Running around the Illinois State Bone Student Center Ballroom, throwing his hands in the air and screaming into a microphone, Harvey Alston on Tuesday morning managed to get some 400 middle and high school athletes excited about leadership and sportsmanship, while slipping them some advice about life on the side. "We have to get along with people regardless of our size, color or beliefs, because the real difference comes from inside of you," said Alston, an author and educator from Westerville, Ohio, who gives motivational talks. "You can make a difference." Sponsored by the Illinois High School Association and the Illinois Elementary School Association, Alston's speech was the opening session of a day-long leadershipsportsmanship summit for student-athletes, one of three held around the state this week.

Resist temptations Throughout his presentation, Alston blended humor with his serious message about the need for athletes to resist temptations if they are to be effective leaders. Beer commercials seemed to be his favorite target. "They don't show a beer drinker from Peoria, Illinois, sitting at Billy Bob's bar and grill with his pants hanging down so far you could put a quarter in the slot. No! On TV, a guy opens a beer and women appear." At the same time, Alston made it clear that student-athletes had the responsibility not to be taken in by such ads. "You can one-by-one change this world around.

You can one-by-one change your school around. All you have to do is go back and be your best," Alston said. Having the right attitude is the most important factor in being your best, he added. Alston's message seemed to reach at least one participant. Sarah Bennett, a cheerleader and member of the basketball and track teams at Beardstown, said, "I can change things if I have a mind to." Positive message After Alston's presentation, summit participants broke into three groups where they heard from other speakers whom encouraged them to give of themselves as leaders and work to bring positive changes to their schools.

"We want to bring awareness of sportsmanship and leadership into the schools, because they really are one and the same," said Jeff Creek, an IHSA administrative specialist in charge of the day's program. "We bring them here to give them the direction and knowledge they will need to lead their schools." This is the third year the IHSA and IESA have sponsored the Leadership Sportsmanship Summit. It is the first time the event is being held at three different sites. About 700 people attended the session Monday at De Kalb and another 150 student-athletes are expected at today's summit in Collinsville. midway through Monday night's game, at Arizona and left with his fourth concussion The ISU victory was the first over Eastern Illinois in four meetings.

Berry, however, has not lost faith in cornerbacks Corbin and Armando Andrade and safety Sam Young. "I saw those kids play against Minnesota," Berry said of a 55-7 loss Sept. 18. "While they got beat a couple of times, they got beat by some really outstanding athletes. But they were stride for stride with them and the guy made a play.

I have confidence that our secondary is capable of making plays." Defensive tackle Devon Finn said the ISU pass rush, which produced no sacks on 35 Southwest Missouri pass attempts, needs to reassert itself. "We have to start getting to the quarterback more, rattle him and get some sacks," said Finn. "We have to take some pressure off our secondary." Berry said another factor in the defense's performance last Saturday was the slippery, well-worn artificial turf at Plaster Field. "I was concerned going into the game about that surface. It is an awful surface," he said.

"The first three snaps of the game both our corners had already fallen down. From that point on they were measuring every step they were taking 'with the fear they were going to fall.
