AN UNEXPECTED D1V0RCH, The divorce of the Paul Jarboea a great surprise to their friends, no one supposed that they baj more than the usual amount of marital woes. They seemed fairly happy, and there was little warning, for they were living together until a month They were married about nine years ago, and had one son named for well-known lawyer, John Jarboe, father of Paul. When Eleanor Dimond married Paul Jarboe It was a fashionable church wedding, and every one thought It very auspicious, both had money, position and the same set of friends. The wife inherited sixty or seventy thousand dollars from her father, General Dimond. They have lived at Santa Cruz most the time since, and came to town only for the busy winter season.

They were with Mrs. Jarboe, who Is considered one of the most brilliant conversationalists In San Francisco. She is very devoted to her son, and now has the grandchild in New York with her. She made a literary venture under a masculine nom de plumo, which was not at all a success, and Furnished for the "Sentinel" by W. R.

Says the Call: Young Arellanes had the honor of winning his first game this aeason. The youth showed he had soma of tile right kind of baseball blood coursing through hlB veins. His control was good and he had a package of speed that kept the other men wondering while they stood at the bat and faced the youngster. Besides this Arellanes practically won his own game In the fifth. The score was a tie, and two were on the bags with as many gone to the bench.

Druggist THE 10NE REFORM SCHOOL A peculiar condition of affairs at the Iono Industrial School is revealed by the report of the Assembly Committee which Investigated that institution. A paper published by the school Is print. ed at Stockton at a cost of $40 to $50 per month, while the printing plant bought for the school by the State Is disused. This plant wag purchased to give employment to the boys and to allow them to gain a knowledge of the printing trade. It was cast asldo by Superintendent Redick on the ground of economy.

He claimed that it cost more to print the paper at the school than to contract it ouL For the same reason bread is bought from a Stock ton bakery Instead of being baked the boys at the school. Apparently the name should be changed to the Preston School of Idle ness, for the whole scheme and purpose of the Institution have been sac rificed to petty economies. To save a few dollars a month, the boys are denied the opportunity of learning to be printers or bakers. It seems that the entire scheme of Industrial education has been allowed to fall Into Innocuous desuetude to save running expens), yet Industrial education as a means ot reforming vicious boys was the pur pose In view in founding the school. It Is a pity that so beneficent a scheme has been so basely prostituted.

As a fact the school has never had a fair show. It never had but one 8u perlntendent who appreciated his moral responsibility, and who en- deavored to make the school what It was Intended to be. That was David S. Hlrsclibcrg. Oakland Tribune.
