for 13 yards in the game "I was pretty consistent today" Flagler said "I was pretty pleased with my performance because I took advantage of what was there There wasn't a lot of big runs I was able to the three or four tough yards when I had to" he added Fullback Tracy Johnson led the Tigers In rushing with 91 yards on 19 carries Clemson alternated four backs frequently in the sweltering Atlanta heat The Clemson ground game amassed 283 yards rushing to Tech's 83 After Roulhac's return gave the Clemson offense the ban at the 19-yard line to start the Tigers wasted little time getting on the Georgia Tech held the ball for only two plays as quarterback Rick Strom was intercepted by Clemson right cornerback Delton Hall on his second play from scrimmage After exchanging punts the Tigers displayed their ball-control offense traveling 92 yards in 9:39 Clemson went most of the distance on the ground with senior tailback Steve Griffin of Charlotte picking up 27 yards on five carries in the drive The Tigers also got a big boost from a 21-yard pass from Rodney Williams to Ray Williams on a thlrd-and-15 situation See TIGERS page 9B got a rare start in front of the injured Kenny Flowers and led a strong Clemson ground game wltlr 77 yards on eight carries Terrance Roulhac a senior wide receiver and kickoff return man was also instrumental in the Clemson victory Roulac christened the game on a positive note taking the opening kickoff from 9 yards deep in his own end sone and eluded his pursuers down the right sideline before finally being knocked out of bounds at the 19 for an 81-yard pickup Later after Georgia Tech scored its only points on a 27-yard David Bell field goal Roulhac again found a seam in the Yellow Jacket coverage snd galloped 39 yards to mid-field that led to another Tiger touchdown "We had been practicing all week and we were trying to keep one man out and either give myself or either Steve Griff en the opportunity to break a long one and everything worked out well and we had a chance to break it" Roulhac said "Coach (Danny) Ford has always stressed we need to go out and have something happen big and on the offense return unit we feel that at any moment we can try and break the game open and have a big play So we try and make that happen and give the team a little momentum and it worked out per FIRST SCORE FOR TIGERS Clomson'i Tracy Johnson smallest amount of yardage given One part of the Clemson defense that has received some scrutiny in the past two weeks from Ford was the line backing corps A member of that group is Henry Carter a redshirt sophomore from Gastonia NC who was asked to explain the difference between the first two games and the victory over Georgia Tech "We (the linebackers) feel that we have a responsibility to the defense The entire team relies on us to be the quarterbacks of the defense Just like Rodney (Williams is to the offense" Carter said "As for today I think that the hard work we have had is beginning to pay off We executed well today and that was something that we Just didnt do in our first two games" Concerning having to play in the heat that was over 100 de grees on the Astro-Turf surface of Grant Field Carter said "It was definitely hot out there today but Coach Ford likes the heat We practice in it all the time I think that the heat was a plus for us because of our depth on the defensive line" Aaother aspect of the Clemson defense that has been haunting Ford of late has been the secondary coupled with a lack of pass rush Bandit end Terence Mack a 6-3 240-pound senior from Winns-boro felt that the Tigers showed Just what they are capable of against the pass against the Yellow Jackets For the game Georgia Tech signal-caller Rick Strom completed Just 11 of 29 passes and had one intercepted for 139 yards and was under immense pressure from the Clemson defensive front all day See CLEMSON page SB ATLANTA Ga For the first time since 1977 and the second time ever the Clemson Tigers have gone into the state of Georgia successive weeks and returned home unbeaten The first time it happened was in the Steve Fuller-Jerry Butler heyday But this time it was based on total domination of the Clemson defense "We are very very proud of our football team" said Clemson coach Danny Ford after Saturday's 27-1 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Georgia Tech at Grant Field The way the Tigers moved the ball offensively and stopped the Yellow Jackets defensively must have given Atlanta an idea of how it was back in the Civil War during Sherman's March to the Sea 1
