for much needed ihot of adrenaline to spark 1U Saturday performance in "Death Valley" However it turned out that Virginia Tech had the hypodermic ai the Hokies took a 20-14 win spoiling the 1986 to only five yards rushing as the host Gamecocks pounded out a 45-24 victory Saturday night at WU-llams-Brice Stadium The victory was the first of the season for the Gamecocks who were coming off poor appearances against Miami and Virginia Western Carolina had success through the air but its failure to move the ball on the ground contributed to the loss South Carolina grabbed an early 144 lead but Western rallied for 17 points and a 17-14 lead Just before intermission the Gamecocks scored for a 21-17 lead After that it was all South Carolina Gamecock receiver Sterling Sharpe scored three times in the game tying USC record The first half was one of long sustained and usually successful drives The Gamecocks didnt punt in the first 30 minutes They had five possessions and scored on three of them The other two ended in a fumble and an interception Western Carolina had a mild drive with the opening kickoff but it stalled at midfleld The Gamecocks took over on their nine following a punt The Gamecocks under the direction of redshirt freshman quarterback Todd Ellis proceeded to roll the distance of the field The workhorse in the drive was running back Anthony Smith who carried the ball seven times for 48 yards Ellis had completions of 14 yards to Ryan Betbea and 21 yards to Danny Smith The touchdown came on an S-yard reverse by Kevin White a native of Charlotte It was White's first drive that took 12 plays The touchdown came on a 12-yard pass from Perkins to Washington Roach was true on the kick and It was a 14-14 game with 7:52 left in the half Ellis bad a pass picked off by Charles Harrison at the USC 39 That led to a 51-yard field goal by Roach and gave Western the lead for the first time 17-14 with 6:32 left in the half The Gamecocks then went on a workmanlike 14-play
