two games are at The Citadel and at Western Carolina Marshall finishes its regular season at home against Western Carolina next week Peterson set a Southern Confer ence record for passing yardage For the game Clemson had 267 yards on the ground The Tigers were very effective running the ball straight at the Tar Heels especially taking it to the linebackers were looking for the option and the Phillips said we had some success outside We didn't plan to go up the middle as much as we did but that is what they gave us so we took it A key and appropriate decision by Clemson head coach Danny Ford to go for a first down instead of a field goal on a fourth-and-two situation at the Tar Heel 38-yard line spoke a lot of the confidence he had in his offensive unit field goal was out of Da (Treadwell) range so I figured we either had to punt it or go for Ford said Ford also showed that he still had confidence in tailback Terry Allen Allen had fumbled three times in the game and lost all three Ford decided to go with the freshman again in the most crucial of situations Allen responded by taking a pitch from Williams on the option and skirting around the left end for a 6-yard gain and a Tigers' first down Asked if he was aware that Allen had fumbled three times before he called the option Ford said I figured fumbled all he needed to fumble today He had a couple of bad things happen to him today But still a fresh man and he made the big play when he had By JIM ARMOUR Herald correspondent CHAPEL HILL NC Accord ing to Clemson quarterback Rodney Williams it was Clemson To the Tiger faithful in attendance Saturday afternoon at the University of North Kenan Stadium it was a thing of beauty Williams was talking about the game-winning drive capped by David Treadwell's 30-yard field goal with which Clemson secured a 13-10 victory over North Carolina in the battle of Atlantic Coast Conference football supremacy The victory assured Clemson of no worse than a tie for the ACC title vintage Clemson We just ran the ball right up the middle mixing in the option We have to throw the ball If we could have gotten it in (for a touchdown) it would have been better but we got the win and all that The march to the goalline started at their own 20 with 7:38 remaining in the game It ended 19 plays 67 yards seven minutes and 13 seconds later when the sure-footed Treadwell split the uprights The workhorse of the drive was fullback Tracy Johnson who had 37 of his game-high 124 yards on 11 carries in the barrage into the game my coach told me if came down to a final drive go to Williams Treadwell Johnson said a North Carolina native (Kannapolis) this one is special for Johnson added think 1 play harder against North Carolina such a nice feeling to win This type of drive has become a Clemson trademark keep it on the ground and use every available second The Tigers did it the past two years to Georgia and again a few weeks ago to Duke Four times on the drive Johnson picked up key first downs Once on a third-and-four call running behind the blocking of All-America guard John Phillips is the way we like Phillips said wanted to get the ball to Tracy and let him get the yards for us Carolina surprised us by running the 50 a lot and that opened the Hurricanes in rout MIAMI (AP) Steve Walsh threw four touchdown passes and Miami of defense had nine sacks Saturday night
