up the slack for Terry Allen who is still hampered by a knee injury Allen carried only six times for 20 yards against the Tar Heels "This was my best (game) since been said Henderson felt pretty good today I was running the ball well and had confidence And the holes (made by the Tiger offensive line) were so big you help but run through them was my best game because I was able to play longer I knew Terry be able to Henderson was one of several Tigers who played with a nagging See TIGERS page 2B Seminoles too much for USC By STEPHEN WHITE Herald sports editor TALLAHASSEE Fla Consid ering the severity of last massacre and considering the ad verse conditions precluding this scalping the South Carolina Gamecocks felt more like survi vors and less like victims Saturday afternoon after succumbing to the Seminoles 35-10 at Florida Doak Campbell Stadium No the Game-cocks were not content in defeat but as head coach Sparky Woods put it encouraged in the fact that our players played hard and tried to compete overcome a very hard loss (losing standout quarterback Todd Ellis to a knee injury a week ago) and competing and trying very hard to win and put us in a position to earn a bowl Victories in South last two games would go a long way in earning that bowl bid And despite the 25-point margin Florida State could have run up even larger South Carolina displayed signs of promise Saturday as the Gamecocks tried to piece together an effective post-Ellis offense starting over a little bit but we re Woods said think leave here a better football team than when we In between Florida six sacks South Carolina quarter backs Dickie DeMasi and Pat Turner experienced calculated success completing 12 of 22 passes for 105 yards with only one interception With Harold Green bowling his way to 79 yards rushing the Game cocks mounted sporadic stretches of offense enough to prevent Florida explosive offense from lighting up the scoreboard as it did a year ago See USC page winners in the semifinals of the GRA playoffs Saturday at Hargett Park setting up a rematch of last championship between the two Tuesday night at Rock District Three Stadium The Raiders won the title 8-0 last year The Raiders beat the Green Dragons 20-0 while the Hornets came away with a 6-0 victory over the Trojans in a defensive battle The Hornets and Trojans fought to a scoreless tie in the first half only because the Hornets stiffened and clutch execution by his players put the ball in the end zone Quarterback Barry Webster faked a handoff to Siegler through the middle then turned and found Eddie Cook all alone in the right corner of the end zone Cook hauled in the pass for the only score of the game Trojans played us tough and were well Cornwell said were shaky in the first but settled down just glad we finally got the ball into the end Trojans' coach William McNeil said backed them up and score They backed us up and scored That was the differ ence in the Germaine McKee was the difference between victory and defeat in the Raiders' win over the Green Dragons rambling 15 yards for a touchdown as the Raiders took a 6-0 lead in the first half McKee scored on a 5-yard run in the third period to put the Raiders on top 12-0 On the ensuing series the Green Dragons fumbled and Marco Hutchinson fell on the ball for the Raiders But the Raiders returned the favor two plays later when Justin Edwards recovered a fumble leading to the Green See GRA-Y page 8B up defensively and stopped the Trojans on downs inside the 10-yard line Midway through the third quarter the Hornets began Herald sports writer If Lewisville and Great Falls fail to meet in the Class A playoffs the Red Devils fans who were among the estimated 4000 people who crammed into Lewisville Stadium Friday have to wait an entire year to see if their team can avenge its 39-0 loss to the Lions Next year the Lions will move into a new 4000-seat facility adjacent to the high school And who will be the first guest to invade the new stadium? Great Falls of course Because the game is considered the eleventh game of the season it will not count in the region standings The final game of the season between the two will be played in Great Falls and be the one that counts Falls coach Danny Sawyer and I got together and we decided this would be a good thing for both schools and the fans who come out to watch us Lewisville coach Bennie McMurray said stands are packed every time we play each other We felt that playing twice a year will help offset 11 practice York coach JR Boyd said told them if we practice they still had to turn in equipment I started making calls and found out the Byrnes and Clinton had won I called the South Carolina High School Association people Saturday morning to find out if we had counted the points right They said we had and that Byrnes was in We expected it but it was tough hearing It all came down to points Byrnes (6-5) earned 19 York 18 The irony of the situation is that because Region 3-AAA competition was not as strong this season York was penalized Points are awarded for victories only Beating a team with a winning record is worth one more point than beating one with a losing record Just four region teams finished the season with winning records Two Camden and Clinton are headed to the playoffs while York (7-4) ends its season York lost to Rock Hill Northwestern Clinton and Camden lost to three of the best teams in the state and played Clinton down to the Boyd said proud of the players Hwause thev had a good season weight room open during the offseason I feel good knowing they are willing to come in and work The keys for us are to stick to a good off-season weight program and to work hard to get Boyd made a couple of offensive changes Friday starting Ruben Potts at quarterback and Mac Watts at tailback Both are freshmen Watts rushed for 43 yards on 13 carries while Potts completed six passes for 49 yards started Ruben because we wanted to give him a chance to show us what he could Boyd said runs the option well and deserved the chance Mac has played some tailback this year so we decided to give him a start This mean we have we have lost faith in our regulars What we want to do is create a competitive atmosphere so the players will work harded in the off-season good to have players competing for the same positions They all know that just because they started this year mean Jhey will start next year The ones who work the hardest in the offseason and play the best in our four preseason scrimmages next year will be our starters gate during the regular season so we will rotate opening sites each Close not enough been said that almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades After what happened to York following its 6-3 victory over Clover Friday it just might be true Both teams went into battle sporting 6-4 overall marks and tied for third place in Region 3-AAA at 4-2 The winner had a chance to make the playoffs but it was a waiting game that depended on several other factors we got back to York I told thp nlavers that we still had a shot tough to miss the playoffs but tougher knowing just how close we New season With its 14-3 loss to Newberry Friday Fort Mill finished the season 2-9 Not a good season record-wise but the two victories provided first-year coach Steve Boyd with some building blocks for next season were an awful young team this season and have a lot of work cut out for us if we want to be Boyd said were some positive signs this year but we still have a long way to go A couple of players came to me and askee' me to be sure to keep the.
