a a a life as Ground Operations Manager at what is now the Central Illinois Regional Airport. Marvin enlisted in the Navy in July, 1942 in Peoria and entered service in the Navy V-12 program at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana in June, 1943. He then entered Midshipman's school at Northwestern University in 1944 followed by Submarine School in New London, Connecticut, in 1945. During World War II, he achieved the rank of Ensign and saw acpatrolling the English channel, intercepting German supply ships in 1945. His ship was sent from France to Miami, Florida in July 1945 for two months and then on to Key West, Florida for further repairs.

He was discharged from active military service in February 1946. Because of his experience with naval command and engineering, the Navy asked Marvin to serve in the Korean War. He volunteered to serve and again entered active Navy service in 1951 in Astoria, Oregon. He was the Executive officer on USS LSSL 106 landing vessel and on USS LST 1148 which were engaged in war operations in the seas around Korea and Japan until late 1952. He related many times that this was a frightening and difficult period for all who were involved in the conflict.

Marvin received the 10 year Naval Reserve Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. Marvin enjoyed many diverse hobbies. One of the first was fishing. His father and maternal grandfather were avid fishermen and Marvin was also. Many Summer vacations were spent in northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and Canada in search of the elusive Northern Pike, Walleye Pike, Muskie, Bass or anything that might be hungry.

This hobby lent itself to a true love of Marvin, being on the water. His time in the Navy indelibly imprinted in him the love of boats and ships of all kinds. Whether building them, manning the helm or being a passenger, it did not matter. You could tell that all the problems of the world were left on shore when he was on a cruise of any kind. Aviation was another love of Marvin's.

He learned to fly early on and never allowed it to wane in his life. He owned four different aircraft in his life. A Beech Bonanza, Piper Cherokee 180, Piper Cherokee Arrow and a Cessna 152. All throughout his life he reveled in the act of flying and the reminiscing of past adventures all pilots invariably encounter. After he retired he applied his love of aviation by way of taking on the duties of Airport Authority Ground The Pantagraph Wednesday, April 10, 2002 A7 CENTRAL ILLINOIS Viola J.

Also surviving are an aunt, Norma Dooley; and six cousins, Carolyn Dooley; Martha (Bill) Frey; William (Ruth) Costigan; Jean (George) Prescher; Peter Dooley; and Karen Dooley. Marvin was devoted to his family and was blessed to have been an important part of more than one family over his many years in this area. His maternal Grandparents were the Dooleys. Marvin was the direct descendent of William and Minerva Dooley who along with a family of thirteen children, emigrated from Clark County, Kentucky in the Fall of 1851 and located in Bloomington, Illinois. Marvin and Donna (Brandt) Maurer raised three sons in Bloomington after moving literally from coast to coast during World War II and the Korean War.

Marvin and Donna's extended families also remained in this area and helped to nurture their son's business and medical careers. In 1990 Marvin married Wen Zhe (Cui) Maurer and resided with her in Hudson until his death. Wen and Marvin worked together to help bring her two sons, Lin Lin and Lin Tao, from China to the United States where they completed their education and are now using their talents in international businesses in China and Great Britain. Like many of his generation, Marvin's early career plans were affected by World War II and the Korean War. Marvin was very bright and an excellent student and had planned on entering medical school at the University of Illinois.

However, his education was interrupted by the wars and when it was resumed at Illinois Wesleyan in the early '50s, he and Donna had two young sons to raise. Between the wars, Marvin sold insurance, ran a residential construction company and operated a retail lumber yard in Lincoln, Illinois with his father. Following the Korean War, Marvin was employed as a sales executive with the Ideal Dispenser Company. The company was eventually sold and relocated out of state, which resulted in Marvin's next and most productive career as a partner in Evans Associates, a prominent Bloomington architectural firm. Marvin's firm designed and supervised the construction of many significant building facilities at many of Illinois' public and private universities, as well as numerous other commissions.

Following the dissolution of Evans Associates, Marvin again operated a residential and commercial construction company, and concluded his professional work Operations Manager. Throughout his life, Marvin enjoyed building things, both as career and as a hobby. Sheep and swine farm operations were interests of Marvin that continued for many years until the death of his father, who supported the needs of the livestock during the week. On the weekends Marvin and his sons would arrive and continue with what ever building or farm project was on going. Woodworking was the hobby that he enjoyed at home more and more in his later years.

He, like all woodworkers, accumulated many tools and finally he had to build an addition to his home to house the projects. Many hours were joyfully spent creating different pieces of furniture and art. Now these pieces acts as the reminders of Marvin's life and love of the things that moved Marvin attended Hudson United Methodist Church. He was a wonderful father and husband and a dear friend to many people. While we mourn his death, we celebrate his long and interesting life.

He will be dearly missed. The family members wish to express their profound appreciation to the Doctors, Nurses, Aides, Volunteers, and family friends that cared and comforted Dad in his final years. Truly, we are all connected to one another. John R. Neal STREATOR The funeral of John R.
