The council claims that nothing has been done to establish a permanent office in South Chicago, though members claim that such action was promised by Jan. 1. The temporary office, staffed by volunteer workers, was opened in the offices of the South Chicago Community Services Center at 8930 Commercial Ave. last December.

Logelin, U.S. Steels midwest vice president, issued a statement yesterday concerning the federal court fine imposed on the company. The indictments of the company that were returned late in 1969 resulted from an unforeseeable breakdown of mechanical equipment that the company employed to remove solids from process water used in its blast furnace operations at South Works prior to their return to Lake Michigan, Logelin said yesterday. He continued: "The company believed then, and continues to believe, that neither it, nor any of its employees, were guilty in these circumstances of any violation of the law. Repair of the equipment, Logelin said, "was begun immediately following the accidental breakout and was pursued under forced draft until completed in order to minimize to the extent, possible, the discharge into the lake.

The company since that time, has entered into an agreement with the state of Illinois and the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Chicago, under which a system for handling all South Works process water, including that used at its blast furnaces, is being installed. Brzezinski, he said, would not be asked to make a decision on whether he wants a bench or jury trial until a trial date is set. Breclaw is 48, and has lived in (Continued on Page 3) Responding to a call of a home invasion, 4th District Officers Ronald Swick and Ronald Reinsma were approached by a man near 84th and Bennett, who told them that someone was upstairs with his wife. The officers investigated the incident and four gunmen came from the upper floor and fled into the basement. The officers were in pursuit, but the gunmen allegedly hid in the basement and refused to surrender. Officers Swick and Reinsma then reportedly summoned heavy equipment to the scene, and the alleged offenders were flushed out with police dogs and tear gas. Alexander Anderson, 22, of 7914 Bennett, was arrested and charged with attempted rape and armed robbery; Charles Cherry, 29, of 6501 Racine, was arrested and charged with Learns Scout Is A Friend' By KATHLEEN HALLAHAN (Of The Daily Laumet Staff Herbert Breclaw, named interim mayor of Calumet City Monday night during a special meeting of the City Council, told The Daily Calumet that he intends to be a candidate for mayor when a special election is held, possibly within the next 60 days.

The Calumet City mayoral seat has been vacant since Friday, when the Illinois Supreme Court ruled that Joseph W. Nowak was ineligible to be mayor of the south suburb since his 1970 conviction of conspiracy to defraud a federal savings and loan association. Nowak today is beginning a three-year term in prison in Sandstone, Minn. Several ballots by the seven aider-men failed to determine who would be interim mayor. The first and second nominations of Breclaw failed to receive the needed votes, as did nominations of Aid.

Joseph Sayne and Aid. Sarah Mase. After two recesses, however, a third vote on Breclaws nomination was successful. Breclaw said yesterday that he was slightly surprised at the number of times a vote was taken. I thought two or three ballots would come up with a decision.

he said. But he added, I think the meeting was very good. I think the City Council did a good job, and I think that members voted in the best interests of Calumet City. Belinda, along with more than 30 fellow troop members, took it upon themselves to send Christmas greetings last December to servicemen whose names appeared in The Daily Calumet Service Lines Christmas List.
