Pantagraph Thursday, October 12, 2006 www.pantagraph.com Ed Benedict, animator of 'The dies at 94 By John Rogers ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES Ed Benedict, a legendary animator who put life, love and laughter in TV cartoon characters like Fred Flintstone, Barney Rubble and Yogi Bear, has died at the age of 94. Benedict died in his sleep on Aug. 28 in Auburn in Northern California, his longtime friend and fellow animator David K. Sheldon confirmed Tuesday. "He was quite an interesting fellow, that's for sure," Sheldon said.

"He was the main character designer for all the early HannaBarbera cartoons, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw." Benedict, who worked at MGM, Universal and other studios on short, theatrical cartoons, joined Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera soon after the pair launched their groundbreaking Hanna-Barbera TV animation studio in the late 1950s. Compton McLEAN Brandon J. Compton, 21, of 113 N. Second McLean, died Monday (Oct. 9, 2006) at home. His funeral will be at 11 a.m.

Friday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Princeton, with the Rev. Jeffery Schlesinger officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Norberg Memorial Home, Princeton.

Memorials may be made to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. He was born Aug. 25, 1985, at Chesterfield. a son of Richard A.

Compton and Christine J. Holland Compton. They both survive. He was a member of Matthew's Lutheran Church. Mary Jean Duncan LeROY Mary Jean Duncan, 79, of Castle Rock, formerly of LeRoy, died Monday (Oct.

9, 2006) at the Brookside Inn in Castle Rock. Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1700 W. Hovey Normal. Private interment will be in Mansfield Cemetery, Mansfield.

Mary Jean was 'an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints, Castle Rock Ward, where she was also a member of the Relief Society.

She was a homemaker. Her life revolved around her church, family and friends. She was proud to have served her. Heavenly Father as a missionary in the Chicago, Illinois Temple Mission. She enjoyed reading, sewing, nature, crafts and spiritual music.

Delmar E. Graning FARMER CITY Delmar E. "Cisco" Graning, 80, Farmer City, passed away at 3:25 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 11, 2006) at Heritage Nursing Center, Champaign.

His funeral will be at noon Saturday at Calvert-BelangeeBruce Funeral Home, 106 N. Main Farmer City, with the Rev. Andy Adams officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery, Farmer City. Visitation will be from 10 a.m.

Delmar was born Aug. 13, 1926, at Ellsworth, a son of Clarence Frederick and Ethel Shoemaker Graning.

He married Norma Lea Smith on Nov. 15, 1952, in LeRoy. She passed away Nov. 2, 1993. He is survived by two sons, Joe (Sally) Graning, Champaign, and Fred (Julie) Graning, Farmer grandchildren, Evan Graning and Graning, both of Champaign; Amanda Lowe, LeRoy; Dustin Lowe and Heather Graning, both of Farmer City; and Chelsey Lowe, Fisher; and two sisters, Darlene Morrillo, East Palatka, and Mary Ann Rainey, Normal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jonathan Lee Graning; and brother, Donald Graning. Delmar worked for Admiral Co. in Bloomington for many years; Copley's True Value, Farmer City; Radio Shack, Farmer City; and was a television repairman for Feys Electronics, Bloomington. Delmar served in the U.S. Navy.

He enjoyed fishing, bingo, playing pool and spending time with his family. Darrell F. Hall COLFAX Darrell F. Hall, 91, of 106 S. Harrison, Colfax, died at 1:45 a.m.

Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2006) at BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Colfax. His funeral will be at 10 a.m.

Darrell Friday also at Hall Duffy- -Pils Darrell Hall Memorial Home. The Rev. Diane Yentes will officiate. Burial will be in Wiley Cemetery, Colfax. The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice.

Mr. Hall was born April 4, 1915, in Potosi Corner, a son of Harold and Clella Carter Hall. They preceded him in death. He first married Wilma McClure on Aug. 1, 1936.

She died on Oct. 31, 1981. He then married Rosemary Wait on Oct. 19, 1985. She died in June 1997.

Surviving are three sons, Jimmy (Lisa) Hall, Santa Clarita, Larry Hall, Corpus Christi, Texas; and Ricky Hall, Nogalas, one daughter, Dawn (Charles) Cochran, Pontiac; stepchildren, Larry (Carol) Wait, Quincy; Scott (Connie) Wait, Forrest; Tom (Rosanne) Wait, Bloomington; Julie (Joe) Plattner, Bloomington; and Colleen (Karl) Doering, Hudson; two sisters, Shirley (John) Foster, Chenoa, and Edith Smith, Oklahoma City, three brothers, Dean (Cathy) Hall, Morton; Don (Joan) Hall, Cropsey; and Ray (Toshia) Hall, Quinlinn, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 22 two great great grandchildren; 18 stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Mr. Hall was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Dalton and Doris Meyer-Buess. Mr. Hall owned and operated, with his father, Hall's Garage in Cropsey.

He also owned and operated, with his uncle, and Sales and Service in Thawville. He retired from Empire Machinery in Arizona. He was a member of Knights of Pythias while he lived in Arizona, and also the past president of Fairview Church. buted in 1960 and was an immediate hit. Forty-six years later, Fred and Barney remain squarely in the public consciousness as pitchmen for various products, including Flintstones' vitamins.

Before joining Hanna-Barbera, Benedict worked for another cartoon legend, Tex Avery, at both Universal and MGM 1 studios. At MGM, where Hanna and Barbera also worked, he was the lead layout artist and designer on "Deputy Droopy" and other popular theatrical shorts. 11, 2006) at his home with his family by his side. His funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Richard Rabe Richard Rabe Patrick's Catholic Church, Dwight, with Father James Rickey officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery, Dwight.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hager Memorial Home, Dwight. Memorials may be directed to ALS Association or the Humane Society of Livingston County. Richard was born on Easter Sunday, April 13, 1952, in Streator, son of Richard Winslow and Margaret Myrtle McDonald Rabe. They preceded him in death.

Survivors include one sister, Mary Ann Rabe, Dwight; two beloved nieces, Marisa (Andre) Rabe, Pontiac, and Amber (Dustin) Rabe, Dwight; one special nephew, Robert (Rocky) Rabe, Monmouth; cousins, Kathryn O'Haver, Jane (John) Aschenbrenner, Bob (Joanna) Speaker, Suzi (Dana) Dauber, Michael (Darcy) Speaker, Dick (Gail) Pilgrim, Don (Kay) Pilgrim, Marsha (Tom) Brown and David (Jill) Rabe; and two special friends, Gary (Gail) Fredensborg and Jim (Joanie) Campbell. Along with his parents and uncle, Lt. Robert McDonald, who died in World War II, a cousin, Joseph Speaker; and an infant nephew, Richard Francis, preceded him in death. Richard was a tax auditor for the Illinois Department of Revenue from 1973 until his retirement. He graduated from Dwight High School in 1970 and Illinois State University in 1974, with a bachelor's degree in accounting and business administration.

Richard was an avid Cubs fan, a wonderful uncle and friend, and will be greatly missed by all. He also worked with "Woody Woodpecker" creator Walter Lantz on several shorts, including "'The Dizzy Dwarf" and "Unpopular Mechanic." Benedict, who was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, had requested that his ashes be scattered over California's Carmel Bay. Information on survivors was not immediately available. Ada V. Romani WASHINGTON Ada V.

Romani, 87, Washington, passed away at 12:20 p.m. Monday (Oct. 9, 2006) at Washington Christian Village. She was born Feb. 24, 1919, in Mendon, a daughter of Henry G.

and Viola M. White Ewen. Ada married Roy Lee Romani on Oct. 8, 1938, in St. Louis, Mo.

He died Jan. 24, Monday 1965. Ada Romani She was also preceded in death by one sister. Survivors include two sons, Melvin C. (Kate), Frankfort, and Ron R.

(Kathy), Metamora; one daughter, Diana Lee (Clark) Pool, Las Vegas, nine grandchildren; and eight greatgrandchildren. She worked at the Caterpillar Tech Center in Mossville, retiring in 1983. She was an active member of Crossroads United Methodist Church of Washington. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at her church, with the Rev.

Tom Goodell and the Rev. Bob DeBolt officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memory Gardens, south of Washington. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Mason-White Funeral Home and a half-hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be made to either Crossroads United Methodist Church building fund or the Roy L. Romani Scholarship fund at Washington Community High School. Wednesday (Oct. 11, 2006) at the Home. His funeral will be at a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fairbury, with Pastor Tom Krieger officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday at Martin-Burke Funeral Home in Forrest. An additional visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church Saturday. Burial will be at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in rural Wing, with military rites accorded by the Forrest American Legion. The family suggests memorials be left to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairbury, the Prairie Central FFA Scholarship Fund or the Meadows Mennonite Home Alzheimer's Unit. Verne was born Dec.

14, 1920, in Blairsburg, Iowa, a son of the late William M. and Wavie Barbe Sanders. He married his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Johnson, on Nov. 28, 1947, in Fairbury. She survives of Fairbury.

He is also survived by two sons, Richard (Jeannie) Sanders, Forrest, and Robert (Deb) Sanders, Strawn; three grandchildren, Brad, Blake and Brooke Sanders; four brothers, Wayne (Mary Ellen) Sanders, Fairbury; James (Sue) Sanders and Vendell (Marlene) Sanders, both of Chatsworth; and Albert Sanders, Thawville; and many nieces and nephews. Verne was a 1941 graduate of Saunemin High School, where he was very active in the FFA. He served his country in the Army during World War II in Army intelligence, where he attained the rank of sergeant. He was a farmer and, after retiring from farming, he worked at Trainer Grain and the Weston Elevator. He was very involved in the poultry industry, raising turkeys and hatching eggs for Honegger Farms, and was a delivery driver for consolidated turkey growers.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Fairbury, where he had been a member of the church council. He was also a lifetime member of the FFA Alumni Association and cooked pork chops for over 28 years at the FFA Leadership Camp. Many people enjoyed and were touched by his great sense of humor. He enjoyed his family, his grandkids and his family pets. Oliver Roman Supilnyk WAPELLA Roman Supilnyk, 82, Wapella, died at 3:40 p.m.

Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2006) at' Jackson Heights Nursing Home, Farmer City, surround-- ed by those who loved him. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Wapella, with the Rev.

Don Roszkowski officiating. Burial will be Roman Supilnyk Roman Supilnyk in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Wapella. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. He was born Nov. 20, 1923, at Tarnopol, Ukraine, to and Euvokia Eubitska Supilnyk. He married Eleanor Adamczyk on Nov. 20, 1965, atChicago.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Supilnyk, Wapella; one daughter, Maria (Norman) Hougham, Wapella; stepchildren, Steven Moulton, Las Vegas, Juanita Plock, Peoria; Kathy (Steve) Wilson, Wapella; Michael Moulton, Gurnee; and Colleen (Tom) Isaac, Park Ridge; 10 grandchildren, including one very" special granddaughter; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Nicholas, Michael and Steven. He was a retired machinist.
