Title IX Revisions Would Have Varied Effects at State soccer chib was largely basing his bid for varsity statue on Title IX requirements Penn State turned down the soccer club's bid and Conley turned to the Office of Civil Righto and the Pennsyl- -vania Human Relations Commission for hhnw investigator (from the Philadelphia bureau of the Office of Civil Righto of the Department of Education) was supposed to have come (to Penn State) in June" Conley said yesterday there was a shortage of money for travel and the investigation been rescheduled The investigator was to have spent time on campus trying to determine if Penn State mmpliwH with Title IX requirements in sports in general and look into the soccer case specifically uncertain of where we stand Conley said weren't sure then (early summer) what support we'd get from the new administration (Reagan's) and from the looks of things it be much the people in Philadelphia are in limhn themselves They want to spend a great deal of time with a case until they get a clarification (on the Title IX requirements) disappointed and a little frustrated by the situation Obviously we don't have a really clear -policy statement yet and even the people in Philadel kidding I hear about that" said another who promptly added: around the country we have more women on a higher level of awareness who will fight the said Penn State field hockey and lacrosse coach Gillian Rattray at Penn State the women athletes are docile For the most part they've come from high schools that give them anything and happy with whatever they get here Their level of awareness has not been heightened I first came to this country to work in summer camps (Rattray is from England) I believe the stories some coaches would tell about the treatment they got in their high schools and the discrepancy in salaries (between the women and men coaches) and the scheduling of facilities say what can we do about They were bogged down traditionally I felt that this country was 200 years behind but Title IX or at least the threat of it got things moving sad that it took Title IX to do that at least philosophically sad at it objectively and realistically if Title IX collapses it would mean a backward step for Urn Conley the unpaid coach of the Penn State phia know for certain whaf will happen with Title IX They know only what they read in the At Penn State the coaches of some programs know for certain that the dismal financial picture means cutbacks in their programs The coed rifle team has been dropped from varsity status effective immediately victim of spiralling costs rather than the abolition of Title IX Annette Thompson resigned as women's golf coach and Candy Royer resigned as tennis coach and both reportedly are being replaced by graduate student coaches So even before the Title IX troubles the money crunch was on at Penn State fantastic to say that we have 31 varsity Gillian Rattray said unfair to expect football to support everything And we really might be at the saturation limit In cities different groups help support different sports but State College tog enough for that People can only see and absorb so much Title IX isn't dollar-for-dollar equity equaly opportunity I'm an idealist but I hope it just the threat of Title IX that has allowed us to By DENNIS GILDEA Time! Sports Writer If the Reagan administration has its way and revamps or scraps the Title IX requirements as applied to women's sports in the schools and colleges what effect will it have on Penn State's still-ambitious athletic program? A difficult question and one it turns out with a variety of answers depending upon who is questioned Some Penn State sports are being cut back and one (rifle) has been dropped completely regardless of the future of Title IX requirements Some highly successful programs will probably continue to flourish A team like the soccer club which is seeking varsity status and has filed a complaint against Penn State with the Office of Civil Rights ofthe Department of Education based on Title IX requirements is as a result of the Reagan administration's decision to examine sex discrimination rules in sports cast into the farthest corners of limbo pending whatever develops And some Lady Lion athletes contacted yesterday were blissfully unaware of Vice President Bush's comments Wednesday I know anything about said one Lady Lion when informed of the passible Title IX changes The Centre Daily Times Friday August 14 1981 Page 16 Hawks Take 2-1 Series Lead BY JOHN DIXON Times Sports Writer Wayne Haas was nearly perfect pitching a nifty two-bitter while his defense was spectacular enabling Howard to whitewash Port Matilda 2-0 in last night's third game for the championship of Centre County Baseball League The Hawks winners of the league crown six of the last seven years can wrap up their seventh title Sunday afternoon at 2 pm at Howard The Hawks won the opener of the best-of-five series 11-1 only to have Port Matilda bounce back behind the clutch hitting of Randy Stimer and Keith Bennett to win game two 4-3 Haas 3-0 in the Shaughnessey playoffs was near perfect allowing an infield single by Jeff Miles in the sixth and a single off the center field fence by John Simpson in the seventh In the five innings prior to Miles' hit Haas was like a craftsman doing his trade He walked four three in the last two innings and struck out four A walk in the first to lasing hurler Terry Simpson was all that stopped Haas from being perfect through the first five innings as he retired 15 straight until two outs in the sixth Port's Simpson pitched well enough to win most ball games allowingjust two runs on four hits striking out five and walking one But names like Wilson Spaudling and McGregor don't show up in box saves and they are who won the game for the Hawks Those are the brand names of the gloves worn by the Hawk players and they certainly lived up to their reputation No fewer than eight hits were taken away from the Porters by the great defensive play of the Hawks Howard which finished fourth in the east and is just one step away from the league crown broke from the gate immediately Fred Grieb single to deep second stole second Price walked and on a wild pick-off move both runners moved up a base Terry Simpson walked to load the bases and the Porters' clean-up hitter Gary Weaver came to the plate The crowd was going wild and it lookedlike a scene from at the Weaver ran the count foil fouled off a few pitches and Haas threw one on the comer with a great breaking curve and Weaver is called out on strikes The Port tans couldn'tbelieve what they saw and the roar could be heard all the way to Howard With one out in the seventh catcher Kim Kunes gives Haas some added strength bylining a home run to deep left field Miller makes his catch off Daughenbaugh and John Simpson lines a base hit off the bottom to the fence in center Stimer then flys to center where Miller makes another nice play then Walker walks and Haas records a strike out to end the fray and send the teams to Howard for the fourth game Sunday Said a happy winning coach Paul Haas you know when we play Port going to be that kind to a series But tell you that was one heck of a ball game played by both teams You couldn't ask for much more pressure tension crowd involvement and defensive plays than were in this one It was just a fantastic ball game" Winning pitcher Wayne Haas stated relied on my fast ball and curve and was able to mix them up very well But boy you can't say enough about the defense we played tonight It was just awesome Now we go back to Howard and in front to our home town fans the momentum is going our way It's a great feeling to win hoe on this field and hopefully Sunday we can win it for our fans down there" drilled a base hit through the hole at short moved to second on a sacrifice by Bob Yearick took third on a wild pitch and scored on Wayne Haas' ground out The bottom of the first is where Port home field momentum started to slip away thanks to the gloves of the Hawks Bill Gearhart subbing for a late-arriving Jeff Miles drilled a shot down the third base line where the Hawks' Scott Miller made a beautiful back-hand play and threw to first where Curt Heverly completed the play with a scoop out of the dirt Mike Price hit an instant replay down third and the same day resulted in the same ending and old Mo Men turn was switching sides Simpson then matched Haas frame for frame although the Paters committed four errors in the game But Simpson managed to erase them from the bases and cause no damage Howard's Fred Grieb went into the hole at short to take away a hit from Rabie Daughenbaugh in the third Grieb again went to the hole this time to snare a line drive and a would-be hit from the bat of Bob Walker Heverly went into the hole at deep first knocked the ball down and tossed to Haas covering to rob Miles to a hit in the third Toby Kunes made a diving catch in left field to take away a hit from Walker in the sixth and it proved to be one to the bigger plays to the game when Willie Miller follows Kunes' play in center to rdb Daughenbaugh to a hit Miller then does it to Stimer on the same play with a runner on second With the Hawks holding the slim 1-0 lead in the last to the sixth and Haas pitching a no-hitter to this point the crowd at Pot Matilda rose to the occasion With two quick outs Miles beat out an infield College Area Teeners Eliminated 2-0 WAYNE HAAS who turned In a sparkling two-hit shutout at Port Matilda last night for third after an errant Porter throw The County League playoffs will continue Sunday at 2 pm at Howard Mistrial Declared in Raiders-NFL Dispute Lebanon Valley the hooked up in a scoreless game fa- nine innings last night According to Teener rules a pitcher cannot pitch more than nine innings a day so Lillie brought in Kevin Rife who picked up a save in the win over Schuylkill West and Landis went with Kevin Emerich Rife got the first two batters on strikes in the 10th But a single by Rich May an RBI-double by Ed Boeh-ler and Emerich' single sent the large hone crowd home happy College Area's Steve Ake doubled to open the bottom to the 10th but Emerich protected the shutout by getting three straight outs guess it was not to be" Lillie said after the game give Lebanon Valley credit They made the plays But proud to the College Area kids They came a long way No 2 in the state bad We're certainly not hanging our heads just execute Some aggressive base-running took us out to some potentially big innings But Lebanon Valley beat themselves They had gtod pitching depth I'd say Kabel Emerich and Baker were the premier pitchers in the Kabel who pitched the-4-1 win over Red Lion Monday gave up seven hits last night He struck out 14 and walked two College Area stranded 12 runners last night including three in the fifth In the afternoon game College Area scored three runs in the fifth to break a 34 tie Andy Jeffers drilled a triple over the rightfielder's head He scored when the relay was thrown wildly to third An error a stolen base a LUlie called in Rife Pinch-hitter Cory Schlegel attempting to sacrifice popped the ball up near the mound Rife caught thf ball and doubled up Todd Butler at first The next batter walked and then Rod Dreisbach singled to center Darryl Washington got the ball and threw a strike to Jeffers at third nailing Cliff Woodford for the final out got a gutsy performance from Snyder" Lillie said pitched five innings Tuesday and said he was ready It's too bad we didn't give him better support We were lucky to beat Schuylkill West It seemed they were coming from behind every game in the seventh According to George Cabs the state tourney director from Harrisburg next year's tourney will be held either in Altoona or Huntingdon LOS ANGELES (API- After long and tense deliberations a federal jury has proven incapable to unraveling the dispute between the National Football League and it's Super Bowl champion Oakland Raiders A mistrial was declared Thursday night and a new trial set for Sept 21 in the battle between Oakland's Managing General Partner A1 Davis and the other 27 NFL teams t- The US District Court jury heard 55 days to testimony about how and why the league blocked the planned move to Los Angeles in early 1980 Then the jury to seven women and three men deliberated for 13 days and appeared to be deadlocked 8-2 in favor to the Raiders when Judge Harry Pregerson decided it was impossible for them to reach a verdict The end to the trial was like a goal line stand The Raiders were bitter that they score in their bid to move to Los Angeles The NFL attorneys wouldn't say they were happy about the lack to a winner but they had kept Oakland from moving Davis the drama's central figure was not present at the courthouse for comment on what obviously was a bitter loss for him even though it counts as a tie But Davis scheduled a news conference for today at 10 am PDT Other spokesmen for the two sides expressed anger afterward with the attorney Joseph Alioto calling for an investigation to one to the jurors who had been harshly criticized by the jury forewoman NFL Attorney Pat Lynch talked to the huge legal expenditure estimated at millions to dollars before and during the trial that began last May 11 cost to this lawsuit to the league is enormous It's outrageous that it has to be tried again" Lynch said 1 try it again in September amf we'll beat them in said the Raiders' attorney former San Fran cisco Mayor Joseph Alioto In the meantime Alioto said he win seek a UB office investigation to one juror whose unyielding support to the NFL drew harsh criticism from the jury forewoman earlier in the week NFL Commissioner Pete Roselle was present in court for the finish that finish anything Roselle then said: disappointed we win it That's what we came here for considering it's a local issue and it was fried here in Los Angeles it would be like Ronald Reagan breaking even with Jimmy Carter in Plains Roselle said adding that the NFL is prepared to- go ahead and contest the Raiders again at the second trial Roselle would not speculate on possible negotiations to end the dispute without a second trial saying that was up to the 27 other clubs in the league He said he thinks the league will soon add two expansion teams but added: say that Los Angeles is going to have one I have no vote" The trial had appeared over at 3 pm Thursday when sources close to attorneys said a mistrial was about to be declared But it took nearly eight more hours for the Judge to briig it to an official end In the meantime Pregerson met with jurors Individually to question them and talked with attorneys about how issues in a second trial could be streamlined Speaking in a weary voice as he announced the mistrial shortly before 11 pm Pregerson told the jurors they had been conscientious in face to the turmoil inside the jury room Not mentioning any particular Juror or jurors the judge told them: a sharp difference to opinion developed and you were unable to bridge the gap Certain tension and friction developed Certain statements were made that are 1 perhaps 6 -a ttif SAFE AT THIRD: College Andy Jaffars relay got away allowing Jeffers to score slides safely Into
