which led to his New York debut at Philharmonic Hall in January 1970. Since then he has toured extensively throughout the U. Canada. Europe and Central America. The three works programmed for this week's concerts have a common thread that runs through them.

In each work there is an echo of vastness extending from the wide open spaces of the Western prairie, through the frozen forests of Sibelius' native Finland to the broad, sweeping steppes of Central Asia which was the homeland of Rachmaninoff until he defected just 60 years ago, coincidentally by crossing over into 1 BURTON CUMM1NGS Cummings To Precede 'Bread' Concert Ik, l.ichonberg). gives his aunt Phoebe (Mary Pedersoni a bad tune. Both concerts begin at 8 p.m. Also returning will be violinist Daniel Heifetz who made his highly successful debut with Maurice Abravanel and the Utah Symphony four seasons ago.

The program to be performed at both conceits includes: the Utah premiere of Dr. Gates' "Ballad of the Prairie State," Sibelius' Violin Concerto, and the Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2. Crawford Gates, born in San Francisco and reared in Palo Alto, California, has composed 258 original works and made 336 musical arrangements. His most popular work, Utah's centennial musical "Promised Valley," has had over 1,500 performances including a continuing summer run in Salt Lake City since 1967 which is now performed in a theater that bears the show's name.

Burton Cummings will be at the Brigham Young University Marriott Center on March 25 as part of the "Bread" concert. Burton Cummings, following hot on the heels of his smash cross country Canadian tour and his American solo debut at Los Angeles' Roxy Theatre, has announced the first leg of his solo American tour, "An Evening With Burton Cummings." A new single, "I'm Scared," from his soon to be Gold Portrait Records album, "Burton Cummings," will be released simultaneously with the tour. To make the new year even sweeter for the former lead singer and composer of the illustrious Guess Who, "Stand Tall' crossed the 1,000,000 mark and earned the newly relocated Los Angeles artist his first solo American Gold Record Award, certified by the R.IA.A. Burton's band for the American tour will include Jim Gordon on drums; Ian Gardiner on bass; Mike Rheault on keyboards and Danny Weis on guitar.

The first leg of the tour kicked off Feb. 6 in Minneapolis and swung South through. As headliner, Burton will be making his first appearance since 1975 when he last toured with the Guess Who. "I've got lots of music tn share with my fans and I'm just burning to go out on the road and give it to them." (Burton Cummings recently). Cummings' musical roots were planted a long time before the Guess Who blossomed.

Born in Winnipeg on New Year's Eve, 1947, Cummings was nurtured on music from the beginning. He recalls how, at age three, he was cranking up his mother's record player to hear songs by Doris Day and Dinah Shore. It wasn't long before he replaced these selections with his won collection, including rockers such as Fats Domino, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis. "From the time I was nine years old, I used to save my allowance to buy that precious single each week." Burton recalls, "I used to dream that one day I would be able to make a record, but I never thought I had much chance because of the remoteness of my home town." Miss Bonheur is probably best remembered for her picture "The Horse Fair" which she painted in 1848.

It was purchased by Cornelius Vanderbilt for $53,600 and given to the Metropolitan Museum in 1887. Born in 1822 in Bordeaux, France, Miss Bonheur studied art through her father, a drawing teacher, concentrating her efforts on lauding the beasts of burden and using dramatic landscaping which she developed as a student of the Barbizon school of painting in France. The first of her popular pictures "Ploughing in the was exhibited in the solon of 1841, and is now in the Luxembourg Museum. The painting "Stable Mates" was done by Rosa Bonheur, one of the first woman artists recognized in the art world. There will be something very different about the program presented by the Utah Symphony next Wednesday, at 8 p.m. in the Salt Lake Tabernacle. The orchestra's 85 players will be part of the audience rather than performers. The occasion will be the second Salt Lake appearance of one of the most respected concert pianists in the world, Rudolf Serkin, who is scheduled to give an all Beethoven piano recital under Utah Symphony auspices.

He appeared with Maurice Abravanel and the Orchestra in 1973. When asked why Mr. Serkin will be appearing in recital rather than as soloists with the Utah Symphony, Maestro Maurice Abravanel, musical director and conductor of the orchestra, explained that Rudolf Serkin allocates part of each season for recitals and another for orchestral appearances. March 16 falls within the recital period. "We should like to have had Mr.

Serkin appear with the orchestra again this time," noted Mr. Abravanel, "but considering his limited availability and the worldwide demand for this consummate artist, we felt we should hot let the opportunity for a recital slip bv."
