B4 MONDAY, MAY 12, 2008 THE STATE, COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA WWW.THESTATE.COM OBITUARIES DR. MURRAY JARVIK Co-inventor of nicotine patch Dr. Murray Jarvik, a pioneer researcher of smoking addiction and co-inventor of the nicotine patch, has died. He was 84. Jarvik died Thursday at his home in Santa Monica, after a long struggle with congestive heart failure, said Mark Wheeler, a health sciences spokesman at the University of California, Los Angeles.
In the early 1990s, Jarvik, a UCLA professor of psychiatry and pharmacology, and Jed Rose, then a UCLA postdoctoral fellow and currently director of the Center for Nicotine and Smoking Cessation Research at Duke University, invented a transdermal patch that delivers nicotine directly into the body to help smokers fight the urge to light up. Jarvik's research into the absorption of tobacco through the skin began with studies of farmhands who harvest it in the South. When Jarvik and Rose could not get approval to run experiments on human subjects, they decided to test their idea on themselves. In 1992, the patch became available in the United States by prescription for smoking cessation. It was approved for over-thecounter sale four years later.

Gail Zion Williamson, 58, into the arms of her beloved Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, May 10th, 2008, after half year battle with ovarian cancer.
She was in her home, surrounded by loved ones, when the Lord demonstrated His final victory over death and suffering by peacefully and mercifully calling her home to be with Him. Gail was born on Christmas Day, 1949, in Cleveland, OH, to the elation of her loving parents, Hugh and Sally Zion. A graduate of Mayfield High School, Gail attended Ohio University, where she received a bachelor's degree in 1971. She became a school teacher, delighting in the successes of her adoring students. It was in Tappahannock, VA, that Gail met Jack Williamson, whom she married in 1972.
She later enthusiastically shifted roles to her second career as a homemaker, giving birth to her first son John in 1975, her daughter Jennifer in 1978, and her second son Eric in 1983. As her own grew older, Gail could not resist the excitement of making a difference in the lives of children, and she returned to work as a preschool teacher for 16 years before retiring to travel and to spend more time with the family. Gail fulfilled her lifelong passion for adventure by devoting her final years to exploring Canada, England, Scotland, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland, always with Jack close by her side. She made several additional trips to England to visit Jennifer while she was teaching there. Gail's love for music dominated her life.
She had a beautiful voice and was the bedrock of the alto section in church choirs, where she served faithfully virtually her entire life. Though she enjoyed praise songs, she had an abiding affection for the great hymns of her deep Christian faith. Gail taught children's choir for a number of age groups over the years, and between this ministry and her teaching she impacted so many lives that it was unthinkable that she might venture out even to run an errand and not encounter someone she knew and, of course, loved. One of Gail's most endearing traits was her laugh, infectious, good-humored, and often just loud enough to embarrass her children. She had a passion for telling stories, and nothing pleased her more than sitting around the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, swapping stories and experiences with family and friends.
entire life was rooted in her Gail's profound faith in, and love for, Jesus Christ. She loved to read for her own pleasure, but this enjoyment was eclipsed by her unquenchable thirst to know more about Him. She could barely restrain herself as she continually discovered new things about her Lord over the course of her various Bible studies. She went on numerous women's retreats in an effort to walk more closely with her Savior and to connect with and sup-. port fellow believers.
All who knew her felt her love for them as a reflection of Christ's love for us all. Over the last three years Gail found a new purpose in life even as she was coming to grips with her terminal illness. This purpose arrived in the form of three beautiful grandchildren, whom she loved to a degree that words cannot adequately describe. Even in her final days she was planning visits, buying presents, and investing in their futures. Though perhaps too young to appreciate fully the time spent with her, there can be no question that Gail's grandchildren loved their "Gigi." Though she has gone ahead of us to be with her Lord, Gail eagerly anticipates being reunited in Christ with her devoted family: her husband Jack of Columbia; her son John, his wife Brenden, their son Owen, and their daughter Avery of Youngsville, NC; her daughter Jennifer of Carrboro, NC; her son Eric, his wife Becky, and their son Connor of Charleston; her parents Hugh and Sally Zion of Cayce; her brother and sister-in-law Paul and Cathy Zion of Spartanburg; her brother Craig Zion of Cayce; her brother and sister-in-law Mark and Julie Zion of Irmo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
