Sandy IIook, April 28th. The steam er Vanderbilt has arrived off this point with Liverpool dales to the 18th inst. The great fight took place early on the morning of the 17th at Firnborough, near Aldershot, and lasted two hours and six minutes. Thirty-seven rounds were fought, when tlio people rushed into the ring and the referees were crowded out. The pugilists were then ordered to desist fighting by the referees.

Both men went to grass on the last round. Sayers fell almost every round. In the first dozen rounds, Sayers was knocked completely off his legs. Sayers arms, owing to the severe blows he received from Heenan, suffered a great deal. Ileeuans eyes were much blackened towards the close, and at the last round he was quite blind.

Heenan fought splendidly throughout the contest, but shows more punishment than Sayers. Sayers drew the first blood. On the Correspondence of the Cincinnati Commercial. Charleston am The citizens of Charleston, and the vis-are mutually and agreeably sur-l The Charlestonians had heard so much of the rowdies of Northern politics, that they were alarmed, and there was proposition seriously made to have aouih Carolina regiment of troops stationed here to preserve order. Now there are ltors very are, are few roughs here, and those who their good behavior.

There is a swarm of "policemen about, Irish to a man and they are usually disengaged. The visitors heard shocking reports of the sufferings they would have to endure, and are gratified to find excellent accommodations, good fare, and a general disposition to make them comfortable. There are many things of interest this ancient, curious and historical city, of which, if my lime were not otherwise occupied, I would write extensively. The excursion that is most fashionable is that to Fort Moultrie, which is on Sullivan Island, seven miles below the city. A stoamcr goes down three times a day.

Tickets for the irip twenty-five cents. The breeze on the bay is delicious. There are three large forts defending the entrance to the harbor one of them Tort Moultrie, standing on the site of the 1 al-inctto Fort, so gloriously and successfully defended in the Revolutionary bar against a powerful British squadron-wherc Seavgant Jasper leaped over the barricade amid a shower of cannon balls and nicked up the flag, the stair of which had been cut olT by a shot. Fort Moultrie was tlun of logs of the Palmetto, the best wood in the world for cannon shot, as it is so fibrous aud lough that it will receive a shot and close over a hole, ready to bury another. The Fort is now of substantial brick and granite, and bristles with huge iron guns.

The island was originally covered with Palmetto trees, and still bears a few of them. The Palmetto looks like an exaggerated cabbage stalk, and the verdure looks not unlike a cabbage head only the leaves are angular, tough, and vividly green, and stand out like a porcupines quills. The Charlestonians have summer resid ences on the islands, and in the heated term go down there to enjoy HY liBACl'E, miLI.HK A. K. MILLER.

We left Hannibal at four o'clock Wednesday evening, by the Accommodation Train, under th? coinKictorahip of that ex perienced, attentive and ever obliging gentleman. Capt. J. P. Sharp, who, after bra ving iho perils of the vasty deep, as a sailor, and sporting on the blue waters of the northern lakes, in the same capacity is now treading the decks, handling the heavy freights, and doing the agreeable on the richly laden trains of the boundless prairies of the West.

There were about sixty passengers, nearly an hundred head of horses, mules, and r.xon, besides wagons and almost every conceivable article of merchandise, on the tram. The sioclc, wagons, ami a majority of the passengers were en route for Pikes Peak, nearly all of whom were from St. Louis and Chicago, who taking one of the Keokiik packets for Hannibal, and thence by railroad, came this mute in preference to cither the Missouri River or the North issouri Railroad. We arrived at I In me well in time to take tea with mine host, G. W.

Evans, of the Evans House, who is a model hotel-keeper, and whose house is not surpassed, uud but seldom equalled any where in the West. Leaving Huimcwell, the next place the train stopped for refreshments was at Brookfield, the regular eating house. We have so often spoken of the superior ions of ibis house and its managers, that wo onlj deem it necessary here to add, that C.ipt. FROM CHArtl.KSTOW. April 28. The Conven lion re-assembled at 10 oclock. The platforms were referred back to the committee without instructions, by a vote of 152 ayes to 151 nays A motion was made to instruct the committee to report at 1 oclock which was adopted, and at a quarter to 2 the Convention adjourned till 4 oclock. At 4 I.

the committee on platforms said they would not be ready to report till half past five. Mr. Avery, of N. reported from the majority of the committee. The report of the majority is a combination of Bayard of Cochrane of N.

and Bigler of Pa. Mr. Samuels, of Iowa, proceeded at some length to address southern members, appealing to them not fo persist in demanding an abstraction that will drive one half of the Democrats of the North into the arms of black Republicans. Mr. Stevens, of Oregon, obtained floor and proceeded to give his reasons for sustaining the majority report.

Mr. Burrows, of Arkansas, followed' in a speech on the Southern side. He maintained that the South had upheld the Democratic pa rty from the beginning that the South had been foremost in fighting battles for the couniry, and in fact the Democratic party owes everything to the South. He considered Northern Democrats worse than black republicans, and did not care whether the black republicans whipped them or they the black republicans. Of the two he considered black republicans the most open and manly foes.

As to Douglas, he would not support him if nominated, and considered him as great an enemy to the South as the traitor, Seward was. Mr. Claybourns, of said he had intended to address the Convention to-night, but had now concluded debate was causing a wider breach instead of producing harmony; if continued, it would inevitably result in disruption of the Convention. Mr. Gittings, of moved an ad- aim03t deafening.

The president said A scene of disorder ensued which was that if this contest and uproar continued, he should feel bound in duty to him-elf and the Convention to leave the chair, as it was physically impos- i siblc for him to take part in such a strug- i 1 -i gie and clamor.
