mroup seewny 10 restore opposition election wins BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) Pro- and anti-government protesters faced off in a city south of Belgrade on Saturday, and an international fact-finding mission reportedly sought ways to restore opposition election victories. The mission, led by former Spanish Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez, met with members of the opposition and representatives of President Slobodan Milosevic's Serbian government. Officials from the mission confirmed that there were problems with the Nov. 17 local elections. Massive daily protests began against Milosevic after he annulled opposition victories in those elections.

"Our perception now is that an effort is needed in order to overcome this," Gonzalez said. "There is a confirmation of the initial impression that we had. The problem does exist" Milosevic had claimed there were no election irregularities. About 100,000 people rallied in the streets of Belgrade, blocking the center of the capital for several hours. Earlier in the day, about 10,000 students held their daily protest Milosevic since the autocratic ruler rose to power nine years ago.

The Zajedno, or Together, opposition coalition claimed in a statement that police arrested demonstrators in small towns. It listed five names, and said one of them had been badly beaten. It also claimed activists were fired from their jobs, and that workers and retirees were threatened with loss of pay or pensions if they didn't participate in pro-Milosevic rallies. Opposition leaders said Saturday that a mission from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe was looking for a way to allow Milosevic to reinstate the opposition victories. "It is only up to Milosevic to decide," said opposition leader Zoran Djindjic.

"There are a number of legal possibilities, and if he wants to, he can choose one of them." The opposition on Friday presented the OSCE with documents that it says prove that Milosevic stole its tories. OSCE spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said international officials were looking for a way out of the crisis should it be reinstatement of the initial results, or some other possibility." OSCE officials' meetings with the opposition included "very thorough questioning about all the possibilities to get out of this crisis and about what is the legal situation in this country," Fleming said. Pro-communist supports shouted slogans Saturday in Kragujevac, during a rally to show support for Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic. Riot police formed a cordon around 4,000 opposition supporters to stop them from advancing toward the rally. i will fight each other, and that is the worst that can happen." The danger of widespread clashes between pro- and anti-government protesters has grown with plans by Milosevic aides to stage a large rally in Belgrade next week.

The monthlong protests against Milosevic were triggered by his annulment of opposition election victories in all major Serbian towns, including Belgrade. The demonstrations present the biggest challenge to December 25th ii Christmas Day. A day to share. In love. In peace.

To the south, in the industrial city of Kragujevac, a cordon of police kept crowds of pro- and anti-Milosevic protesters from each other's throats. About 5,000 people chanted "Red Bandits!" against Milosevic and his Socialists.

On the other side, about 3,000 people, many of them elderly, were holding banners reading "Slobo, we love you." "This is very bad, very bad," said Ranko Djurovic, a 45-year-old passer-by in Kragujevac. "I am afraid we East Lawn Funeral Home (309) 663-8842 1102 Airport Rd. Bloomington, IL A subsidiary.
