4 a a a a a a a a a a Frank Otradovec Retires After 45 Years Of Railroad Service Frank Otradovec retired from railroad service on Dec. 31 after 45 years, serving 37-years of that time as agent in the Pilger depot. Frank started to work for the Chicago North Western Railroad Company as a helper in March 1912 at Meadow Grove. His first telegraphers job was in Sept. 1912 at Norfolk.

From that date to World War I he worked as relief telegrapher and station agent at various places, (Atkinson, Linwood, Omaha, Bonesteel, Creighton, York, and Stanton) and was regular agent at Cedar Bluffs at the time of his enlistment in the U. S. Army signal corps in June 1917, He served two years, mostly overseas as telegrapher. On return to the states he resumed the station work for the C. N.

W. at various stations and in the spring of 1920 came to Pilger as regular agent. Frank said his railroad experfence has been more or less uneventful except for the unusual happenings such as floods, severe winter storms, derailments, crossing accidents, but that it has been enjoyable as a means of livelihood. Frank said it has been a privilege and satisfaction to take part in community activities. He served on the school board from 1927 to 1947 and has been Village Clerk since 1926 except for two years of that time.

Frank says his hardest work was serving on the draft board during World War II. He has many hobbies which will keep him busy such as woodwork and gardening. Mr. and Mrs. Otradovec plan to MOTHERS TEA The 1st and 2nd grade pupils and their teachers, Mrs.

Asch and Mrs. Stirz entertained the students mothers at a Christmas Tea on Wednesday afternoon, from 2 till 3:30. Each mother was presented with a Christmas corsage, made by the children. The serving table carried out the Christmas Christmas carols were sung by the pupils, conducted by Miss LaRene Schulz. Coffee, punch, Christmas cookles and mints were served.

First grade pupils and their mothers who poured were Mrs. Junior Koepke and Ricky, Mrs. Jack Chace and Cindy, and Mrs. John Hanzlik and Johnny. 2nd grade pupils and their mothers were Mrs.

Marriage Vows Recited By Cooper, Miss Becker In Iowa Ceremony Miss Margaret Anne Becker, daughter of Mr. and. Mrs.

C. L. Becker of Des Moines, Robert A. Cooper, son of Mr. and Mrs.

Jim B. Cooper, of Marshalltown, exchanged vows Saturday, December 14 at the Congregational Church in Marshalltown, la. Mrs. Cooper is a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Des Moines and also of Iowa State at Ames where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. Mr.

Cooper was graduated from Marshalltown High and Iowa State where he was affiliated with Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The couple will live in Chula Vista, Calif. Mr. Cooper is stationed in San Diego with the U. S.

Navy. Among those attending the reception were guests from Pilger and Omaha. KINDERGARTEN TEA Mrs. Stirz and her kindergarten pupils entertained at a Christmas Tea for their mothers on Wednesday morning. About 45 were in attendance.

The serving table and room decorations carried out the Christmas motif. Pupils and their mothers who poured were Mrs. John Hanzlik and Francis, Mrs. Einar Jensen and Vicky, Mrs. Joe Klima and Shirley, Mrs.

Delvin Schulz and Micheal and Mrs. Richard Dohren and Patricia. Each mother was presented with a small gift, made by the children. PITCH CLUB Mr. and Mrs.

Eugene Wolverton were hosts to a Christmas party for their Pitch Club on Saturday evening. A gift exchange was held for the children. At cards, high scores were won by Mrs. Delvin Schulz and Merlin Hasenkamp. Mrs.

Billy, witz and John Butterfield received low. Jack Chace won the traveling prize. A carry-in lunch was served by Mrs. Wolverton. PIONEER CLUB Mrs.

Eunice Perkins was hostess to the Pioneer Pinochle Club on Thursday evening. At cards, Mrs. Herman Willers and Walter Chace received high; Mr. and Mrs. Pete Topp, second high and lows went to Mrs.

Dave O'Brien and Otto Olk. All-cut prizes went to Mrs. O'Brien and Walter Layton. The next meeting will be January 2 with Mr. and Mrs.

O'Brien. BRIDGE CLUB Mrs. Jack Chace was hostess to the Bridge Club Friday afternoon. Guest was Mrs. Loren Johnson of LaFayette, Ind.

At cards, Mrs. Jim Rennick won high and Mrs. Lawrence Graham, second high. A gift exchange was enjoyed by the members. The next meeting will be Jan.

3rd with Mrs. Graham. SILVER ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. Axel Petersen observed their Silver wedding anniversary Christmas Day.

A family dinner was served and in the evening other friends and relatives were guests. The Petersens were married Dec. 25, 1932. They have one daughter, Nancy, and three sons, Lanny and Jim and Howard who is in the Army at Butzback, Germany. They have one grandson, Leon, son of Mr.

Pilger got a slow start, trailing 14-11 at the quarter and 34-26 at halftime, but came back in the last half for the They still trailed at the third quarter 45-43 but put on a burst of 24 points in the last stanza and held Dodge to wininy, Coney, with points 18 led and Jim the Cardinals.

Wiese led Dodge with 26 points. The Pilger reserves won their tilt with the Dodge seconds 37-20. Miss Ehlers, daughter of Mr. and. Mrs.

Carl Ehlers and Jindra, son of Mr. and Mrs. Longin Jindra, were escorted to the throne by last year's royalty, Darrel Frerichs and Jeanette Stuthman. Attendants were Valdene Vahle, Lanny Petersen, Judy Petersen, Burnell Dreyer, Bob Sprieck, Flavian Goeller, Michael Tiedtke and Teresa Rennick. Crown bearers were Mary Ellen and Roger Duncan, children of Mr.

and Mrs. Russell Duncan. LaRene Schulz was master of ceremonies for the occasion. MERRY MIXERS Mr. and Mrs.

Walter A. Nelson were hosts to the Merry Mixers Card Club on Wednesday evening. At pitch Mrs. Ervin Nelson and Walter Nelson received high and Mrs. Walter Nelson and Louie Woehler, low.

Lunch was served by the hostess. The next meeting will be January 8th with Mr. and Mrs. Art Glaubius. PARTY The Pilger Parent Teachers Association held their second annual Christmas party for the school children and their parents.

Due to several conflicting activities, there was not as large a group as expected. About 90 parents and children enjoyed the evening's entertainment furnished by Mesdames Ronald Lind, Ralph Butterfield, Lawrence Graham, Herb Bennett, Vernon Beckman, Alvin Steinmark, Gifford Burris and Richard Alexander. Several games were played with winners and losers receiving small favors. Carols were sung, conducted by Mrs. Richard Dohren.

Two films were shown by Einar Jensen, "Opration Sawdust" and "Christmas Dream." Miss Carol Tiedtke was in charge of games for children after they had their lunch. Hostesses were Mrs. Harold Schiermeier, Don Roberts, Marion, Wolverton, and Harlan Jackson. Homemade Christmas cook, ies, coffee and cocoa were served. 8TH BIRTHDAY Mrs.

Ervin Raabe entertained at a party Sunday afternoon for her daughter Elaine's 8th birthday. The afternoon was spent at games and Elaine opened her presents. Mrs. Raabe served lunch. Guests were JoEllen Heidemann, Becky Julke, Trudy Pilger, Valerie Frerichs, Pamela and Patricia' Dohren, Marlene Timm of Wisner, Mr.

and Mrs. Leo Raabe, Linda, Alice and Marilyn of Wisner, and Mrs. Antonia Raabe and Elsie of Norfolk. VALLEY CULTURE CLUB The Valley Culture Club held a post Christmas party at the home of Mrs. Howard Lorensen on Friday afternoon.

There were three guests present. A short business meeting was conducted by the president. Entertainment was playing verious Christmas games and the singing of carols. Robert Boldt sang a solo. A dessert luncheon was served by the hostess.

The next meeting will be January 30 with Mrs. Robert Kingston. Pilger All-Stater Dies On Trip Thursday, Waldo K. Gragson, 41, all-state football player for Pilger High School died suddenly from a heart attack at Milwaukee, Dec. 20 while there on a business trip.

His residence was Elmhurst, at the time of his death. He had not lived in Pilger since 1937. Funeral services were conducted by his minister, Rev. Countryman of the Methodist Church: in Elmhurst Dec. 21, and also at the Crosby-Kunold Mortuary in Omaha on Dec.

24 by Dr. Alvah Clark of St. Paul Methodist and Lodge No. 302 A.F. A.M.

Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha. Waldo Keith Gragson was born in Pilger, on March 2, 1916, the son of Carl and Maude Gragson. He attended Pilger Public School and graduated as. valedictorian with the class of 1933. In high school he was selected as an All-State football player at guard position in 1932, and played in the Class A Final Basketball Tournament in the State of Nebraska.

In 1937 Mr. Gragson graduated from Wayne State Teachers College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, where he also lettered four years in basketball and football, and was selected as an All-Conference player in both sports. He was baptized early in life and became a member of the Methodist, Church, which membership he continued until his death. His parents and family moved to Omaha in 1937. He was for a time employed by the Western Newspaper Company, and in 1942 associated with the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company.

In that same year he was united in marriage with Ardys L. Hanson of Kearney, and to this union two children were born: Gary Keith, now 12 years, and Linda Charleen, now 11 years. In 1954 he was transferred to Chicago, Illinois as Midwest Division Manager of Heavy Truck and Tractor Tire Sales. The Midwest Division, with general offices in Chicago, includes Firestone Districts located gin six states. He and his family made their home in the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst, Illinois.

Before leaving Omaha for Illinois he joined the Masonic Lodge and recently completed his work as a Master Mason. He was preceded in death by a sister, Delpha Mae, on June 18, 1922; and is survived by his wife, Ardys son, Gary Keith; daughter, Linda Charleen, all of 208 Rex Mr. and Elmhurst, Mrs. Carl Illinois; parents, Gragson, 3838 Maple Omaha; and twin sisters, Mrs. Janice Krause, 2938 Scott Omaha, and Mrs.

Janette Carson, 1308 Montgomery Wichita Falls, Texas. OUT OF STATE GUESTS Mr. and Mrs. Marlyn Wegner and family of Sherman Oaks, arrived Friday in the August Asch home to spend the holidays visiting relatives here. Other guests in the Asch home are their two sons, Arlie of Manhattan, Kansas and Airman Ronald Asch, who arrived Monday from Westover a AFB, Westover, Mass.

Additional guests on Christmas Day will be Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Wegner of Norfolk, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wegner and family and Mr.

and Mrs. Russell Miller and family. BID OR BYE The Bid or Bye Club met Wednesday for their Christmas party at the home of Mrs. Hermann Topp with a o'clock luncheon. Table decorations carried out the season's theme.

A gift exchange was held and was followed with entertainment at cards. Mrs. Herman Willers received the high score prize. The next meeting will be January 6 with Mrs. Harold O'Brien.

HIGH AND LOW CLUB Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dohren entertained at a no-host Christmas supper on Friday evening of last week. At cards, prizes were won by Mrs. Art Glaubius, Henry Dohren, Alvina Vonderohe, and Berniece Splittgerber, A gift exchange was held and lunch was served.

January' 2, 1958 COLLEGE STUDENTS HOME ON VACATION Students home from College for the Christmas holidays are Maureen Pilger, Beverly Pilger, Arlene Willers, Jeanette Nelson, Don Siecke, Jeanette Stuthman, Carolyn Cornett, Donna Coney, Douglas Jones, Judy Chace, Kenneth and Wayne Cheney, Burton Weichenthal, Robert Butterfield, and Warren Carson. SEWING CLUB Mrs. Emil Gemelke was hostess to her Sewing Club last week. A Christmas grab bag was held and the afternoon spent socially and at sewing. Next hostess will be Mrs.

Julia Reinhold and Mrs. Albert Next meeting will be January 6 with Mrs. Anna Hipp. W.T.L. The Willing to Learn Club met for a covered dish turkey dinner at 1 o'clock at the home of Mrs.

Ewald Heermann with Mrs. John Sokol as co-hostess. Mrs. Bob Sasse had charge of the program which opened with reading, "First Graders Debut on a Christmas Program," by Mrs. Ralph Dye, and "Gracious Gifts Are Given" by Mrs.

Bob Sasse. Mrs. Edgar Sasse read the Christmas story from Luke. The program closed with the singing of Christmas carols led by Mrs. Leonard Pobanz.

Secret sisters exchanged Christmas gifts. The next meeting will be January 16 with Mrs. Clarence Pestel. Pilger Personals Guests in the Henry Meyer home Saturday evening to help him celebrate his birthday were Mr. and Mrs.

Dale Meyer and family of Wisner, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Petersen and girls, and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Pilger and family.

Mr. and Mrs. Don Roberts left Tuesday morning for Rudd, where, they will spend Christmas Eve with Mr. and Mrs. W.

M. Roberts. They will be Christmas dinner guests in the A. C. Schmitt home at Independence, Ia.

Franek home were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Erychleb of Stanton. METHODIST MEN'S CLUB The Methodist Men's Club met Monday evening in the church parlors with a social hour and a short business meeting. It was voted to entertain their wives at a fish fry on January 22.

Pilger Personals Mr. and Mrs. Paul Duffek were Christmas dinner guests in the Wm. Kucera home at Clarkson. Mr.

and Mrs. Leonard Bohm entertained at a Christmas dinner in the Raymond Hipp home. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Hipp and family, Mrs.

Anna Hipp, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bohm, and Mr. and Mrs. John Bohm.

Post-Christmas dinner guests in the Emil Christensen home were Richard Christensen, Norfolk, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Christensen and Dale, Mr. and Mrs. Daly Carson and Warren, Mr.

and Mrs. Ken Carson and son and Mr. and Mrs. Keith Carson and sons. Louis "Stub" Foy suffered a heart attack Christmas Eve and is now a patient at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha.

Ed Tiedtke is a patient at a Norfolk hospital after suffering a light stroke. Christmas Day guests with Mr. and Mrs. A. W.

Heller were Mr. Mrs. Bud Mullinex, Wisner, and Mr. and Mrs. N.

Walter Nelson and daughters. Guests with Mrs. Olga Klawitter for a no-host Christmas dinner were Mrs. Edna Koopman, Wisner; Mr. and Mrs.
