a The week radio Pete Naughton Why radio trumped TV for royal baby coverage Notes from the Inside with James Rhodes Channels 1000pm The idea of this one-off film part of Channel 4's Mad4Music season is simple but viewers' reactions to it will not be In 2008 James Rhodes was sectioned after becoming depressed self-harming and abusing drugs A friend smuggled an iPod loaded with classical music to Rhodes in hospital and after his discharge Rhodes became a professional pianist This film sees Rhodes go inside another (unnamed) psychiatric hospital to meet four of its troubled patients and choose a separate classical piece to play for each of them The result is four consecutive encounters which all start with mutual storytelling and all end with Rhodes at the grand piano playing to his single listener in the hospital's deserted main hall Channel 4's press information asks for music picks not to be disclosed in advance -a pretentiously overblown request given how minor those revelations would be The programme itself meanwhile doesn't seem to struggle with the idea of televising long-term psychiatric patients who are by definition very vulnerable That question about informed consent would perhaps be less pressing if there were any obvious benefit to the four participants but hard to see any Rhodes turns up shows off with his knowledge of classical music and then shows off with his piano playing More sensitive and cultured souls than I might find the resulting film to be transformative meaningful and uplifting I found it shallow and vain Neil Midgley Documentary niAM mzmm ongratulation The Real White Queen and Her Rivals BBC Two 900pm An excellent companion to BBC One's period drama The White Queen this documentary sees Philippa Gregory who wrote the novels that the series is based on detail the stories of the real-life Plantagenets In this concluding instalment we learn how cunning Margaret Beaufort's brilliant plotting steered her exiled son Henry Tudor to power PS Bought with Love: the Secret History of British Art Collections BBC Four 900pm Eighteenth century art collectors are the focus of the second episode of an incisive series looking at how Britain fell in love with art Helen Rosslyn shows how aristocratic collectors on the Grand Tour popularised landscape painting SH Imagine Woody Allen: a Documentary Part 2 The Cafe: Little and Carolin Stoltz The Culture Show the 1 985 romantic fantasy The Purple Rose of Cairo and the whimsical Midnight in Paris which last year won an Oscar PS As dawn broke yesterday on a capital freshly laundered after a night of thunderstorms a pleasingly upbeat story was dominating the airwaves everywhere Radio Today programme as one would hope was a model of probity and inventively offbeat coverage of the matter Sarah Montague opened the programme with the most elegantly terse expression of the known facts that I heard all morning saying simply: Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their newborn son have spent the night in Hemingway have put it better In the absence of any other concrete details about the birth (a fact that was clearly irking the several correspondents posted outside St Hospital) the producers had been forced to get creative here that radio comes into its own trumping rolling TV news with its endless helicopter shots of buildings' expectant crowds empty podiums by having the freedom to explore the fertile edges of a story Home Editor Mark Easton had been sent off to look through the statistics regarding births in the UK and came back with a handful of gems Among them: 2200 other babies were born in the UK on Monday a majority of whose parents married 65 per cent of babies bom across England fall into the ethnic group but only 30 per cent of those bom in London do and perhaps most intriguingly 73 per cent of mothers who give birth in the Borough of Westminster as the Duchess had were born overseas In another off-piste highlight Nicola Stanbridge had gone searching in the archives for material relating to other royal children She unearthed a lovely recording of the then Princess Elizabeth in 1940 aged 14 talking to the youth of the nation on the flagship radio programme Hour wishing you all good she said the voice recognisable but higher flutter feel that I am speaking to friends and companions who have shared with my sister and myself many a happy Hour Captain Jack Aubrey hero of this Classic Serial: Desolation Island (Radio 4 Sunday) is the kind of man want around in a crisis He keeps a cool head has a strong and intuitive sense of human decency is a pragmatist plays the violin Russell Crowe did a fairly good if gruff job of representing him in the 2003 film Master and Dm mo Flying the flag: the Today programme joined well wishers to celebrate the royal birth The Cafe The Culture Show: Who Are You Calling an African Artist? BBC Two 1000pm Wales 1 120pm As the Tate Modern prepares to dedicate an entire wing to two of Africa's most important artists working today 82-year-old visionary modernist Ibrahim el-Salahi and contemporary freethinker Meschac Gaba writer and curator Morgan Ouaintance explores their extraordinary personal stories most notably that of el-Salahi who was a political prisoner in Sudan in the Seventies PS Sky 1900pm Back for a second season Ralf Little and Michelle Terry's slight comedy set in a Weston-super-Mare cafe has its heart in the right place but it remains lame Despite the occasional witty wordplay it's hampered by the limited scope of the story which in this opener sees Sarah (Terry) and mum Carol (Ellie Haddington) getting an unwanted blast from the past SH BBC One 1035pm Wales 1 105pm Picking up in the early Eighties this second part of Robert Weide's absorbing paean to Woody Allen explores the New York film-maker's later career taking in pictures such as Comedy Some Boffins with Jokes Tactual bells sailorly mutterings groans from the unhappy and it turned out Typhus-infected convicts below decks My favourite moment was when a newly recruited midshipman fell from a mast into the cold unforgiving Atlantic: his long terrified a work of exquisite Hitchcockian trauma Needless to say Aubrey instantly dived in and rescued him The DJ and hip musical impresario Gllles Peterson (Radio 6 Music Saturday) who made a practically seamless transition from Radio 1 to 6 Music a little over a year ago says some strange things but plays enough wonderful music to get away with it This show he announced to listeners early on was regular journey through sound bass and a line which could easily have come from Chris satirical sketchpad Forty-six tracks followed over the next three hours spanning everything from Steve Reich to Chet Baker to live performances from Latitude Festival by Calexico and Beth Orton All was forgiven Gillian Reynolds is away Commander: The Far Side of the World David Robb does a much better one in Radio occasional adaptations of the Patrick novels from whence he came Desolation Island the fifth book in Aubrey-Maturin series (Stephen Maturin being the phlegmatic slightly Dr Watson-ish sidekick and confidante) follows new charge the HMS Leopard on a voyage from England to Botany Bay in Australia Its cargo are a rag-tag assemblage of convicts including one Mrs Louisa Wogan (Teresa Gallagher) a woman of noble bearing recently convicted of assisting those rascally upstart foes of the Empire: the Americans offered to pistol the Prime Minister or blow up the Houses of Aubrey explained at one point during Roger excellent adaptation the lending a faintly comic shade to the tableau while his voice registered a mixture of official disapproval and private respect The production as befits a big ticket Radio 4 dramatisation practically reeked with nautical atmosphere: creaking planks rolling waves incessant Who Do You Think You Are? 1 tiSti BBC Four 1000pm Sparked by the US series Old Jews Telling Jokes and following on from Some Vicars with Jokes this now rounds up a collection of scientists chemists and even a "science Viking" to tell their favourite jokes Of course all stand or fall by the quality of their joke but at least the collection of boffins seem to have a better array than the vicars they're a bit cruder for a start and the women provide some of the best It's a flimsy concept though Simon Horsford BBC One 900pm "I just hope I blub and make a fool of myself" says the eminently likeable actress Una Stubbs as the rousing genealogy series returns Delving into her family's past 76-year-old Stubbs whose credits range from the Sixties sitcom Till Death Us Do Part to the Bafta award-winning Sherlock -discovers here that her paternal grandparents whom she never met die until she was in her twenties A few tears inevitably ensue PS Who Do You Think You Are? Radio choice Pete Naughton What's the Point of? Radio 4 900am Former Telegraph columnist Quentin Letts returns for a new four-part run of this entertaining series in which he questions the purpose of various national institutions First up is the Office of the Chief Rabbi year-old who suffers from the disorder but discovers an unknown side of his personality when he falls in love with the leader of his support group Anna (Verity-May Henry) The script balances dramatic tension and finely wrought jokes and is enlivened by a strong turn from Joan Kempson as possessive mother Elsie (Telegraph shop i4lfcl'fcll (l' Italian leather sandals only £2995 inc Three-strap touch-fastenings adjustable heel strap and padded anatomical insole which is being vacated by Thought For the Day regular Sir Jonathan Sacks at the end of this month It's a job that's been described as tougher than the Archbishop of Canterbury but with better jokes But what does the holder do?
