WWW.THESTATE.COM THE STATE, COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2005 D3 Main Shoe Salon 65745-41 FINAL REDUCTIONS! 1614 Main Street (803) 256-1548 M-F: Sat: 10-5 LIFESTYLE LIFESTYLE FAMILY FROM PAGE D1 found out, two things happened immediately: First, permission to do whatever was quickly revoked; and second, the child was punished. Which always has made me wonder: Why do they keep trying? Do they think we don't talk? Do they think if all of a sudden Mom sees Fred walking through the door with his overnight bag she won't tell Dad and they won't figure out what happened? "Nothing is more important than presenting a united front when you are dealing with brilliant children and aren't they all?" says Donna Wright, guidance counselor at Irmo Elementary School. "Parenting is incredibly hard. Once children learn and they learn very young to play one parent against the other, they have won." Obviously, parental dynamics vary, from situations with divorced and remarried spouses, to couples. But ARCHIVES FROM PAGE D1 really, I get to discover things before the historians read them and write about them." FIRST DRAFT OF HISTORY You could argue that much of Hollings' historical legacy will begin here, in a small, neat office sunk deep inside a cavernous warehouse.

The space, distinguished only by old campaign posters on the walls and the eclectic and barely audible sounds of rock, jazz and classical music, is reached by passing row after row of floor-to-ceiling shelves, boxes stacked neatly two-deep. This is where the archival detective work begins. There are boxes of campaign materials; speeches on subjects that range from balancing the federal budget to oceanic research and telecommunications; collections of Christmas cards; and reams of constituents' correspondence. If the 26-year-old Schwartz is overwhelmed by the sheer enormity of the assignment, if she second-guesses the choice of documents to cull and documents to keep, she does not show it. Schwartz, who graduated last May from USC with dual master's degrees in public history and library and information science, is exactly where she wants to be.

Dad can't set himself up as the "good parent" who is always permissive and would let the kids buy everything in Toys Us if it weren't for Mom's saying "no." And Mom shouldn't be set up as the "bad parent" because she's the who always has to set limits.

One parent, no matter what the marital status, should never set up the other as a scapegoat. And if one parent feels another is too permissive, or not permissive enough, those discussions should be had away from a child's very in tuned ears the same ears that may not be able to hear "come clean up this mess" from 10 feet away but that have no problems picking up every word and nuance of a conversation he's not supposed to hear through two locked doors more than 50 feet away. "Discussions of differences of opinions between parents, married or divorced, need to be addressed privately," Wright history teachers or coaches," she said. "I wanted to do none of those things." What she wanted to do was hold the keys to the library stacks, to gain access to the significant papers that make up the first draft of American history. She got that chance at the Truman Presidential Museum and Library in Independence, where she won an undergraduate internship in 2000.

Schwartz not only got keys to the stacks, she was trusted to enter the secured areas that hold the most important Truman documents and artifacts. "The Truman library was where I decided to be an archivist," she said. Donna Denslow, the Truman library's coordinator of volunteer and intern services, said Schwartz distinguished herself from day one. "She was our very first (TSU) student and we couldn't have asked for better," Denslow said. When Schwartz left, the staff found a large cardboard cutout of President Truman and tied it to her car as a memento of her time there.

EXPLODING STANDARD PREJUDICES When Schwartz, of Lee's Summit, came to South Carolina in 2001, she had only a rudimen- says. "It's perfectly OK to say to your child, 'I need to think about this. I will let you know after This gives us time to discuss things with our spouse or just mull something over." Telling them you have to think about it or discuss it with Dad first tells them two things: First, it shows them we won't be manipulated by someone shorter than we are who wouldn't even know the difference between Mork and Fonzie if it weren't for Nick at Nite; and second, it reminds them that Mom and Dad communicate and are a team. And it's important that we stay a team. At times parents will disagree, and it's vital that we find a middle ground to present before the child.

Of course, sometimes being part of a team is admitting you're wrong. One day recently, I pulled into our driveway and found 10-yearold Eric on the roof of our pavilion. After inquiring about the wisdom of that action (meaning I yelled at him and asked whether he was crazy) and letting him know it was something he should never do tary grasp of Southern history. Her knowledge of modern South Carolina extended mainly to news accounts about the Confederate battle flag that had waved over the State House until 2000. "I had standard prejudices about what I thought South Carolinians were like," she said.

But she quickly came to understand that Southern politics and politicians were far more nuanced. When the opportunity arose to become the graduate assistant assigned to the Hollings collections, she immersed herself in the more complex history of the state. "I had no clue he had been a senator for more than 30 years," Schwartz said. She started reading up on Hollings and, particularly, the era between 1966 and 2004. She also relied on the expertise of Dorothy Hazelrigg, who worked with the Hollings papers and is now curator of Modern Political Collections.

The research is "never really stale because a lot of stuff happened between 1 1966 and now," Schwartz said. "And Hollings had his hand in a little bit of everything." She has met Hollings only once, but she knows he is keenly interested and appreciative of the work of the archivists. Real dinosaurs Don't Wear Purple! PR HISTORIC PREDATORS Dinosaurs Unleashed! Of course I didn't believe that. Until I told Gary, who got this sheepish look and said, "Well, I didn't mean for them to climb up there when I wasn't home." Soon after, one of Eric's friends informed his mother and me that "Mr. Patterson said it was OK as long as Mrs.

Patterson didn't find out," adding, "but we didn't go up there much anyway. We tried to play cards up there, but they kept falling off." And for the first time in almost 13 years of parenting with Gary I said, "I don't care what Mr. Patterson said. No one is allowed on any roof at any time for any reason." And being a good team player, Gary agreed. For the kids' own good, of course. Herbert Hartsook, director of the South Caroliniana Library, said Schwartz's diligence, and her ability to winnow the political wheat from the chaff, showed the kind of understanding so crucial for archival success. "She has certainly grown into her potential and is very politically minded, which is a great asset," Hartsook said. In August 2004, Schwartz was named the full-time Hollings projects archivist, a position currently financed by a special grant. Archival work is exacting, so veteran archivists try to ensure that graduate assistants and young archivists use the profession's best practices.

When students and assistants begin working in collections, "we tell them to create three piles: the things they know we should keep, the things they are not sure about and the things they think have no historic value," he said. "At the start we are going through every piece of paper that they have touched with a student who catches on quickly that may be two or three or four weeks." AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION Hollings, who retired from the Senate in January at the age of 83, is among more than four dozen public figures who have donated papers to South Caroliniana's Modern Political Collections. The holdings include papers of South Carolina's congressional delegation, governors and General Assembly leaders, and important political party figures and organizations.

The collections are enhanced by audio-visual materials and oral histories conducted by USC researchers. Over a period of years, the collection has conducted more than 35 hours of oral interviews with Hollings and his staff and expects to add more. Some collections are updated routinely with new deposits of materials, which the library encourages to enhance the historical record. U.S. Sen.

Lindsay Graham, for example, donated his House papers and regularly contributes his land native, was a reporter in Iowa City and Austin, before coming to Columbia. Roers will take over from Ainsley Earhardt, a USC grad, who went to San Antonio, Texas. Also departing from WLTX's news and weekend anchor position was Natasha Curry, who went to a station in Dallas. WIS News 10 has advanced Tamara King to news reporter from morning traffic reporter and special-interest reporting on a weekly community-affairs program. STAYING PUT The S.C.

The staff has earned a national reputation for its work, and has established an endowment to underwrite the processing and preservation of its expanding holdings. When the Hollings collection eventually opens, "it will be a remarkably important collection nationally," Hartsook said. (The library and Hollings have yet to determine when the collection will open to the public.) "If you want to research, say, for instance, the broadcast industry or telecommunications, policies facing the oceans, the space programs, the federal budget, you are going to want to come and do research in the senator's collections," he said. Future historians may never know it was Schwartz who coordinated much of that information, but that doesn't bother her: "It's exciting to organize it in a way that someone 150 years from now will use."
