KENSINGTON PALACE July 14th The Duke of Gloucester this afternoon departed Heathrow Airport, London, for Germany. The Queen has been pleased, on BRITAIN AT WAR The Daily Telegraph LONDON, MONDAY, JULY 15, 1940 BRITISH ATTACK AFTER -DAY SIEGE ADVANCE OVER RIVER BED AGAINST ITALIANS From Our Special Correspondent, ALEXANDER CLIFFORD CAIRO, Sunday. Deep in the heart of Africa a little British garrison is holding out heroically against a spectacular Italian offensive. This is at British Moyale, on the Kenya-Abyssinia border. where the defenders are repulsing attacks on a scale out of all proportion to the place's value.

The garrison has been holding out for four days and heavy fighting continues. In the western desert I learned how the difficulties of Marshal Graziani, the Italian Commander-in-Chief in Libya, caused Mussolini to pick this Kenya outpost as his No. 1 objective. He has ordered artillery fire, while bombers have been trying to flatten the defences and pave the way for capture. But the undaunted British defenders are not giving up their positions yet.

They have even launched a number of counterattacks against the Italians entrenched in their own fort. Our 'planes have been finding excellent targets in the Italian convoys, which are continually bringing up supplies of ammunition and reinforcements to enable the attack to continue. Even if the Italians occupy the British positions they will find themselves in another Fort Cappuzzo with the surrounding countryside controlled by deadly British patrols. CHEAP SUCCESS SOUGHT This offensive is a sequel to the message which Graziani is reported to have received from Rome after Marshal Balbo's death. Angered at the news that British patrols were in possession of an area of Libya larger than Yorkshire, Mussolini decided to carry the war into Egypt and gain a cheap success by the capture of Sollum.

Accordingly Italian propaganda started to build up this miserable collection of whitewashed cottages, which has nothing to recommend it except its glorious position at the foot of a cliff on the edge of a little bay. The Italian radio called this an important naval base and centre of communications. Our scouting patrols, which are incessantly cruising through the vast desert no-man's land sent back reports of the massing of troops. CHESS Kramnik to By Malcolm Pein The fifteenth world champion Vladimir Kramnik is back in action at his favourite tournament, the 15th Sparkassen Chess Meeting at Dortmund. Kramnik won the event for the ninth time last year and is top seed again.

The six-player double-round begins this afternoon, so each player will play 10 games. As is customary, there are four elite players, local star Arkady Naiditsch and a player who qualified by winning the Aeroflot Open, Le Quang Liem of Vietnam. The full line up is: Vladimir Kramnik (Russia) world ranked Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan) 6: Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukraine) 14; Peter Leko (Hungary) 16; Arkady Naiditsch (Germany) 51; Le Quang Liem (Vietnam) 55. It's always interesting to look at games where strong GMs play lines which usually only occur in club chess. This gambit against the French Defence looks well worth a go.

White sacrifices two pawns to compromise Black's structure and get ahead in development. If this is played at Dortmund I'll eat my chocolate chess set. The finish is elegant, Black cannot move his bishop on d7. He had to castle or put his king on f7. is also playable.

Is it time to rewrite those books? Not really.

If you choose to ignore risk in the pursuit of pressure, so be it. Go for 31 do not be surprised if it backfires. In effect North was goaded into 49, expecting a seventh trump opposite. So if East could conjure up a winning defence, South would incur a minor punishment. West began with 5, declarer calling for in the vain hope of driving out the ace.

L'Ecuyer collected the Queen. What now? A trump return was safe enough, but hardly threatening. No, he had his eye on those spades. It was crucial to eject 4A as quickly as possible to isolate dummy's winners. Therefore he switched to a deceptive 47 for the nine and King.

South was in a race against time. He needed to dislodge A and draw trumps before the defence could remove A. Declarer boldly called for which West needed to duck. Having passed that test, South led a trump to and a second spade. Again, West did well.

He shot up with to return a club. Declarer could see a chink of light now. After 4A, he led a second heart. L'Ecuyer had to be inch-perfect. He went in with A and fired back a spade, thereby cutting the communication cord.

South lamely overtook with the Queen and quietly asked for 48. East placed his remaining trump on that. The meaningful action was complete.
