FEBRUARY 4 4, 1987 DAILY SUN-NEWS 9 Family band takes on recording career by Julia Hart The band started as two brothers-in-law fooling around with guitar, playing in the back of the family restaurant on Sundays. Little by little, their experience grew as did their audience. Five years later, the group has a name and will soon release its first album. Dove Flight now has five members, some of whom are related by marriage. Their sound is in line with the current trend in contemporary evangelistic Gospel music, according to group leader Mario Villanueva.

"We play a lot of songs by people like Amy Grant, but we compose a good share of our music among the group," Villanueva explained. The forthcoming album will be exclusively Dove Flight material, he said. "Everyone contributes to the composing effort." The band recently performed at the second annual Sunnyside Float Committee Variety Show in the Gospel portion of the program. They have played for a wide variety of non-denominational groups, churches, for youth retreats and at other community sponsored events. In their five years of playing, their fans as well as their ministry has grown with amazing speed.

"We're not limited to ministering to youth," said Mark Baysinger, one of the original members of the group. "We are an ecumenical ministry." Of course, Dove Flight doesn't forget its own religious base. Most of the members are Catholic and many of its appearances have been related to church events, as tonight's concert is. Besides their music devotion, Dove Flight members Dove Flight features Mark Baysinger, Lisa Baysinger, Mario Villanueva, Gary Street, and Greg Carpino. The Sunnyside Gospel group formed five years ago.
