KINGSPORT TIMES Friday August 1947 Air Force Flexes Mrs Holt Cnina Decides Oil Limited Trade With Japs Nanking A Chins deqided today to reopen limited trade with Japan with the proviso that nothing bo exported that is needed at home Thie Ministry of Economic Affairs announced that China would export tea tung oil and bristles to Japan and would buy in exchange machinery communications materials and railroad sleepers The! government step had been recommended by the Kuomintang (government party) central political council but opposed by the national economic council The government decided to send a commercial inspection party to Japanbefore actual trading begins It alsci Insisted that where possible Japanese Imports would be obtained! as reparations Informed sources told the Asso-Press the Ministry of Eco-Affairs would seek to export $598000 of the $1593910 total Twenty-eight permits for business buildings in the six-months period compared to 51 in the first half of! 1946- The total for quarantine now in effect in Sullivan County Dr Erwin County Health Department director said Thursday Dfr Erwin explained his I statement' was made to clarify the position of peace officer in enforcing the law and to remove any misunderstanding that might arise The quarantine was oredered by State Health Department authorities to stem the spread of rabies which has reached near-epidemic proportions TEC Accident Injuries suffered In an accident at Tennessee Eastman were fatal to William Frances Pearson 49 Holston Valley Community Hospital attendants reported Pearson died at 6:40 pm Thursday He was a native of Bristol and had been employed at Tennessee Eastman Ur the purchasing department for many years He was a graduate of Emory end Henry College Pearson is survived by his stepmother Mrs plant July '28 Autopsy Shows Prisoner Died Of Hemorrhage brain hemorrhage "produced by external caused the death of a prisoner at the police station here July 20 an autopsy report said Thursday The report of Dr JCore who performed an autopsy on the exhumed body of Marvin Berlin 23-year-old Nashville 'veteran was released by District Attorney General Carlton Loser The hemorrhage which caused death' was due to external violence "on the head from some blunt implement" the report said Dr report did not express an opinion on how long before death the injury occurred but said that "it is my decision of some unions to ignore the reorganized NLRB he added tne opinion that this is a "normal reaction" Denham sald he feels that "the sane' i balanced judgment of the union leadership for which and Paroles declined again Thursday to release Erwin Quillen 50-year-old Kingsport man who has been in the state penitentiary longer than any other person Greenlaw board secretary said Quillen had been in Ithe prison since September 29 1921 when he was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in the bludgeon death of Elsie Lawson Quillen has applied for parole each year since 1935 when he became eligible for parole by reason of having served 13 years and seven months Greenlaw said the east Tennessean was convicted of murder "in commission of after serving part of a 15-year sentence for attempted rape of the same victim The records showed Quillen bludgeoned the victim to death with a board in the ball park at Kingsport less than six months after being pardoned on the previous crime for which he was convicted in September 1919 Greenlaw said the board heard 19 other applications for parole at a hearing last week and recommended clemency In four cases
