State able to match Notre Dames defense man for man with such stars as Bubba Smith and George Webster had allowed only 91 points in previous games The teams battled furiously for 59 minutes but the Irish elected to run out the clock in the final 60 seconds a decision which probably influenced voting the next week and moved the Spartans into the No 1 spot With Hanratty halfbacks Rocky Bleier and Bob Gladieux plus center George Goeddeke out because of injuries for the Southern Cal game the Irish felt they needed superior team effort to regain the top ranking and win the national title They got it Sophomore quarterback Coley OBrien filled in for Hanratty and tossed three touchdown passes while the Notre Dame first string defense which had only given up two TDs all season throttled the Trojans The Spartans whose offense scored 293 points on the running of Clint Jones and Bob Apisa and the ellusiveness of quarterback Jimmy Raye won their second consecutive Big 10 title but conference rules prohibited them from making back-to-back trips to the Rose Bowl The Crimson Tide who play Auburn Saturday have turned in three straight shutouts in posting a 94) record Playing without a star quarterback for the first time in years the Tide relies on a stingy defense that has yielded only 37 points Georgia was the biggest surprise of the 1966 football season Picked for an average finish in reached college footballs highest plateau when they were crowned 1966 national champions by the United Press International Board of Coaches The Irish recording a 51-0 rout of Southern California last Saturday that undoubtedly impressed the 35-member panel of coaches drew 329 points -five more than Michigan State to win their first national title in the closest ratings race ever contested Notre Dame whose 10-10 tie with the Spartans Nov 19 cost it the No 1 ranking and sent Michigan State to the top three points ahead last week collected 20 first-place votes to Michigan States 10 The Spartans however received strong support in second-place ballots outvoting the Irish 24 to 10 The Spartans drew one third-place ballot while Notre Dame received four thirds and one fourth Notre Dames victory narrower than the UPIs tightest race when Maryland shaded the Irish 326 to 320 in 1953 climaxed a devastating 9-0-1 campaign during which ND rolled up 362 points while yielding only 38 Alabama the national champion in 1964 drew four first-place ballots and wound up third with 280 points while Georgia following its 23-14 victory over Georgia Tech received enough support for a fourth-place finish with 199 points 12 ahead of UCLA which collected the other first-place vote Rose Bowl bound Purdue placed a kfealthy sixth with 133 points while Nebraska which meets Alabama in the Sugar Bowl took seventh with 126 points 14 in front of Georgia Tech Southern Methodist and Miami (Fla) chose the right time to move into the top 10 for their first visit this season with the Mustangs drawing 49 votes for ninth and the Hurricanes receiving 38 for 10th -The Irish who have finished among the top 10 on seven Occasions since the rating system was instituted in 1950 moved steadily through the rankings after opening the season on No 12 and finally ousted Michigan State from tte top spot midway through the campaign Combining a superb running attack and a precision passing game with an awesome defense
