A6 WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11, 1999 Isted CONTINUED FROM PAGE A1 THE STATE, COLUMBIA, S.C CHAPEL HILL FROM PAGE A1 week. The new campaign is designed to persuade students that alcohol abstinence is hip because it is common on campus. It's part of a trend by universities to use "social norms" campaigns to adjust behavior by changing perceptions about what the typical student does on "We hope this can help reassure students that they don't have to drink in order to fit in at Carolina," said Sue Kitchen, vice chancellor for student affairs at UNCChapel Hill. Studies on the prevalence of college drinking on campus often have relied on interviews with students. But Foss said those figures are unreliable because many students like to brag or overestimate their alcohol consumption and others are too embarrassed to discuss it.

So in the fall of 1997, volunteers stood between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. outside fraternity houses, offcampus apartment buildings and locations where students returned from bars and nightclubs in Chapel Hill. They interviewed the students and asked them to use the Breathalyzer. Study findings underscored the perception gap.

Among those students who blew zero on the Breathalyzer, 74 percent believed they drank less than the "typical" UNC student. Among those with a blood-alcohol content above. .08 percent, 27 percent believed they drank less. The new campus campaign, called "2 out of 3, .00 BAC," is designed to combat the misperception of excessive drinking. Students arriving at their dorms will find stickers and posters on their beds touting the new findings.

Freshmen who display posters prominently in their rooms can receive $50. Stickers get $5. Students on campus Tuesday disagreed about how the campaign would play. "I would put up a poster for 50 bucks," said Roger Smith, a 21- year-old senior from Raleigh. But as for encouraging abstinence, "I don't think it's going to have a positive influence.

When people come to college, partying is a part of that." Tiffany Black, a sophomore from Hackensack, N.J., believed the program might work. She said she and her friends don't drink because "we do so many other things on campus. We don't have time to drink." "Social norms" campaigns have helped reduce excessive drinking and drinking-related injuries at several universities nationwide, said Michael Haines, coordinator of health enhancement services at Northern Illinois University. Haines said the number of students classified as heavy drinkers has dropped 44 percent at Northern Illinois since 1990. More punitive measures, such as university police clamping down on underage drinking, will only send students off campus to drink, according to Haines.

E. Scott Gellar, a Virginia Tech psychology professor who has studied college drinking patterns for more than a decade, was surprised by such a high percentage of UNC students scoring zero and wanted to know more about the sampling techniques. But he said presenting abstinence or moderate drinking as the norm "is the most powerful way to influence The UNC Highway Research Center hopes to test students again this fall and in the years ahead to see if the campaign reduces drinking, Foss said. "It's certainly an aggressive move on their part.

They've done well with morning news in other markets." O'Dell said the new programming results from the addition of CBS' "Early Show featuring Bryant Gumbel," which will debut at 7 a.m. Nov. 1. WLTX currently airs a one-hour local newscast at 7, but will clear that time for the two-hour Gumbel show. WLTX's new program will go head-to-head with WIS-TV's 90- minute news show, which begins at 5:30 a.m., and WOLO-TV's onehour block at 6 a.m.

Jerry Grimes, WIS director of audience development, said his station isn't worried about the additional competition, but he said there's a "distinct possibility" the station would expand its news programming. "They're going to program whatever they can to try to come after us," Grimes said. "We have enormous ratings in the morning. I'm confident that we have the best product in the morning that we can have. We're not overly concerned or anxious about it." In the May Nielsen ratings, WIS' pre-dawn news averaged a 10 rating and 46 share, while WOLO's morning news had a 1 rating and 5 share.

In the 7-9 a.m. time slot, NBC's "Today" show on WIS had a 13 rating and 51 share compared to the local morning show on WLTX with a 3 rating and 10 share. A rating point represents the percentage of households with TV sets. A share represent a percentage of those households actually watching television at a particular time. According to Nielsen, more than 14 percent of TV households in the Columbia market have their sets turned on at 6 a.m.

O'Dell says WIS programming isn't his concern. "We're looking at us," he said. "We're looking at how we can meet the viewer's needs. I'm not going to compare ourselves to WIS. I'm going to compare us with us and decide where we want to be." Dodds said WLTX's early starting time will not prompt his station to expand its newscast.

"We're very pleased with where our morning news is. We're getting a lot of positive feedback from our viewers. I don't think it would be in our best interest to expand at this time." WIS, the traditional leader in news-program ratings in the Midlands, isn't ruling out an expansion of its programming. "NBC is going to discontinue providing us with a 5 a.m. network newscast," Grimes said, "so that makes it a distinct possibility that we will consider going to 5." O'Dell said anchor J.R.

Berry and weather announcer Darci Strickland, now part of WLTX's 7 a.m. show, are already scheduled to make the move to 5. Like CBS, which is searching for a co-anchor for Gumbel, WLTX is seeking a co-anchor for Berry. CBS is banking on big ratings from Gumbel, who joined the network after a lengthy stay as co-host on NBC's "Today" show. Grimes thinks CBS is going to be disappointed.

"Personally, I do not think Gumbel will be successful again. Many people at NBC were glad to see him leave. Bryant has sort of a cold, sour demeanor, which is in sharp contrast to Katie (Couric) and Matt (Lauer)." Doug Nye edits TV Weekly and writes about television.
