figure in the northern provinces helped trigger the nations current political crisis Officials at the Vien Hoa Dao pagoda said monk Quant Thien poured gasoline over himself and struck a match becoming the first monk to make the supreme sacrifice in the churchs two-month drive to topple Ky Two Buddhist women one of them a nun burned themselves to death in similar protests Sunday Meanwhile Thich Tam Chau the prestigious rector of the Vien Hoa Dao and powerful leader of the churchs moderate wing emerged from a morning conference of Buddhist leaders and demanded Ky step down in favor of a caretaker government until national elections are held Chau who Sunday vowed to find a peaceful solution to the crisis which has kept the nation in turmoil for the past nine days gave no time limit for the transfer of power but left little doubt that he would not accept Kys plan to remain in power until elections are held and a new government selected a process which would take until well into next year As Chau spoke two monks in another section of the pagoda slashed their forearms and used their blood as ink to write letter to President Johnson demanding that he end all aid to Ky The letter urged Johnson to cease his policy of using Vietnamese as experimental animals for slavery" Five students wrote a similar letter in blood during a massive demonstration Sunday by an estimated 5000 to 6000 Buddhists that ended in a dramatic stand-off Thich Chaus demands for a caretaker government was seen as a strong blow against Ky who apparently has won over some dissident elements in the army and appeared to be consolidating his regime Chau earlier had worked out the compromise with Ky which called for establishment of civilian government But the Buddhist leadership was angered by Kys refusal to step down until the lengthy process of establishing election laws electing a national parliament and then selecting the government could be accomplished speeding: James Rule II Erwin Thomas Poore
