'ER' live draws viewers, but is disappointing 65640 Audience estimated at 44 million By DOUG NYE Staff Writer Thursday night's much-ballyhooed season opener of "ER" accomplished what NBC had hoped it would.

The episode, telecast live, attracted an estimated audience of 44 million, making it the most-watched season premiere of a drama series in the history of television. The numbers aren't so surprising. Prior to this season, "ER" already was the mostwatched drama on television. It didn't hurt that all summer long, NBC promoted the episode, stressing the novelty of live drama. Too bad the substance of the episode didn't match the ratings.

It turned out that novelty was the only thing the show had going for it. It was for many viewers a huge disappointment and in the process gave the so-called Golden Age of television a bad name. Much of the blame rests on the concept as dictated by the script, which appropriately was called "Ambush." Surely many in the audience felt as if they had been ambushed as well. What 'ER' did was more like a home video than a drama. It had nothing in common with the good done in the 1950s, when the cameras were observers, not participants.

The "story" concerned a documentary video crew coming to the emergency room where they wanted to follow the staff in action. The whole hour was seen from the viewpoint of the camera crew. The cast members often hammed it up and waved as the camera sped past. You could almost see them winking and nudging each other, as if they knew this was a joke on the viewers. What "ER" did was more like a home video than a drama.

It had nothing in common with the good (and yes, there were some bad ones) done live on CBS's legendary anthology dramas "Playhouse 90" and "Studio One" in the 1950s, when the cameras were observers, not participants. "ER" live was more publicity stunt than drama. Happily, next week the series returns to film.
