"News19 This Morning" will air at 7 a.m. as part of a program-revamping agreement between CBS and affiliates. Earlier this year, the network announced that it was ditching its team of Harry Smith and Paula Zahn and replacing them with new faces.

That followed years of placing last among the three major networks in the early morning ratings. One of those new faces is Jane Robelot, a Clemson graduate and former anchor at Spartanburg CBS affiliate WSPA-TV. Joining Robelot will be Mark McEwen, a holdover from the current show, and Jose Diaz-Balart, who comes to the network from the Miami market. CBS' approach will provide a new look to the mornings, according to WLTX program director Fred Steppe. "The first hour will be all local news with CBS giving two 5-minute hits of national news," Steppe said.

"That will be reversed in the second hour at 8. It will be all CBS with us doing a couple of local inserts." Deloris Washington, who now does WLTX's morning inserts, will co-anchor the new expanded format with veteran newsman J.R. Berry. Matt Zidle, who comes to Columbia from the Bristol, market, will be the meteorologist. This is the second time this year that WLTX has expanded its news operation.

In March, the station added a nightly 35- minute newscast at 11 to go with its long-running 6 p.m. show. WLTX news director Mark Leeps called it "a great opportunity" for the station. "We've really been pushing for more local news lately," Leeps said. "Early morning television is sort of like radio.

People listen more than they watch while they're getting ready for work. I think it's a plus that Deloris and J.R. have strong radio backgrounds." Robelot, a 34-year-old Greenville native, came to CBS from Philadelphia's WCAU-TV, where she has been since 1990. Prior to that, she spent seven years at WSPA.
