Every Friday in The 2 State Newberry steals win from Presbyterian NEWBERRY Newberry's 9-8 win over Presbyterian couldn't have been more dramatic if it had been scripted. With Presbyterian (6-5) holding an 8-0 lead with four minutes left in the game and the Bronze Derby on the line, the Blue Hose were poised to walk away with the trophy for the third straight year. That feat had not been accomplished since Presbyterian did it in 1979. But what Newberry did in the final four minutes may not be accomplished again. "We never gave up," Newberry Rattlers blitz Bulldogs By DAN PHILLIPS Special Correspondent Third quarter too costly for S.C.

State By BOND NICKLES Special Correspondent ORANGEBURG The storm that killed the power at South Carolina State's Dawson Stadium late Saturday afternoon was not the most potent one to roll through Orangeburg this blustery day. That distinction would go to a third-quarter tempest by Florida suddenly vigorous offense, which awakened to score 22 straight points and spoil the Bulldogs' upset bid. The Rattlers left town with a 28- 21 college football victory, virtually guaranteeing their spot in the Heritage Bowl as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion. (8-2 overall, 5-0 MEAC) needs only to defeat Bethune-Cookman in two weeks to complete an undefeated MEAC schedule. S.C.

State fell to 5-4 and 3-2, but a loss seemed a remote possibility at halftime with the Bulldogs holding a 21-6 lead. Statistically, the Rattlers were dead even, but S.C. State converted an fumble and a blocked punt into two touchdowns while committing no turnovers. "No, no one panicked at halftime," said Rattler coach Billy Joe. "That's one thing about this team.

They are so calm, it's hard to tell if they are ready to play or not." The Rattlers' 22-0 third-quarter blitz actually began in the closing seconds of the second quarter, with S.C. State up 21-3. With two seconds left in the quarter and at the Bulldog 1, the Rattlers elected to go for the touchdown. Fullback Jerald Jackson was stopped cold as time expired, but was called for illegal procedure. And because it was a dead-ball foul, the Rattlers were able to regroup, absorb the five-yard penalty and kick a field goal, making it 21-6.

Using a -huddle offense throughout the game, went on to score touchdowns on three of its four third-quarter possessions, which accounted for most of its 332 second-half yards. Jackson, the game's leading rusher with 132 yards, would have scored on the Rattlers' other possession, but he fumbled into the end zone and the Bulldogs recovered. It was the Rattler passing game that crushed the Bulldogs, however. Sparked by 222 passing yards in the third 1 quarter, balanced attack featured Robert Wilson (seven catches, 81 yards, one touchdown) and Marvin Taylor (five catches, 98 yards). "They were able to keep moving the ball down the field," said S.C.

coach Mike Taylor said. Newberry (5-6) started a desperation drive from its own 16. The Indians drove to the Blue Hose 27-yard line, then converted a crucial fourth-and-7 play with under two minutes left. On the next play, Keath Porterfield took a draw 16 yards for a touchdown with 1:35 left. "They (Presbyterian) knew we were going to run the draw," Porterfield said.

"I just read the blocks, and took it into the endzone. I don't know how many guys I carried into the endzone, but they were more than welcome to hop along for the ride." The Indians failed on their two- State coach Willie Jeffries. Meanwhile, the Rattler defense at completely bottled up Michael to Hicks, the Bulldogs' star tailback. Hicks, averaging 135.5 yards per as game, was held to 48 yards on 22 carries. Florida 3 3 22 0-28 the S.Carolina St.

Newberry then tried an onsides kick, but the ball was touched before it traveled the required 10 yards.

The Blue Hose took over with 1:35 left on the Newberry 43, and with no time outs left, it looked hopeless for the Indians. The Blue Hose downed the ball on the first snap, but on second down decided to run a sweep. Steve Gorrie was tackled by a host of Indians, and the ball popped loose. Newberry recovered and was given new life with 51 second left. "It was a heartbreaker," Gorrie said.

"I thought I was down, but the officials made the call, and that is their job." With the ball at the 50, Indians quarterback Hunter Spivey hit Willie Sellers for a 34-yard completion to the 16-yard line. Three plays later and with 17 seconds left, Newberry lined up for a 24-yard field goal. "I couldn't watch it," Taylor said. "I couldn't stand the thought of looking down there at it. My heart couldn't take it." Matt Deaton, a freshman from Lancaster, put it through to give Newberry a 9-8 lead.

"It was awesome to see the ball go through the uprights," Deaton said. "There couldn't be anything better." Wofford coach Mike Ayers said despite adverse calls and conditions, his team played hard. "Offensively, we did some very good things; we took care of the ball for the most part." Ayers said this game proved what his team could have done all season. "We've struggled so much, and we've given so many away. We were able to come up with this one. It's kind of frustrating when you look back and know that we've been so close to having a really good year, but we got this win and that is the most important thing." Wofford NO 7 11 7-31 Chas.

Blair scored on runs of 3 freakish weather that saw conditions go from spring-like temperatures and torrential rains in the first half to blue skies bone-chilling cold and swirling winds in the second half, Furman would have had its hands full with Marshall here Saturday afternoon. Add to the miserable weather two costly turnovers that led to two quick Thundering Herd touchdowns in the fourth period and you have all the makings of a 31-6 Paladin loss. "We really thought we had a chance at them as long as it was only 10-0," Paladin head coach Bobby Johnson said, referring to the halftime margin. "At the start of the second half, we actually got a turnover and were hanging in the game But then they scored two quick touchdowns, and that sort of deflated us." Marshall, which is almost certainly bound for the NCAA Division 1- AA playoffs after improving its record to 8-2 overall and 7-1 in the Southern Conference, started deflating the Paladins Homecoming balloons in the first half, when Furman managed 60 yards of total offense and was showing no signs of getting any better in the second half.

In the first half, the only scoring plays were a 28-yard field goal in the first period by Tim Openlander and an 8-yard scoring pass thrown by Chad Pennington to wide receiver Tim Martin capping a 95-yard, 13-play second-period scoring drive. The only highlights for the Paladins during the first 30 minutes were two first downs and six punts by Jody Wade. a if From Staff and Wire Reports CHARLESTON Eight different Wofford runners combined for 340 yards on the ground to lead the Terriers to a 31-23 win over Charleston Southern on Saturday. Lomar Foster carried 10 times for 78 yards to lead the wishbone attack for Wofford (3-7). Quarterback Brad Smothers had 67 yards and two rushing touchdowns and he added a one-yard touchdown pass with 1:01 left that sealed the win.
