C4 SUNDAY OCTOBER 23 COLLIGE FOOTBALL STATE ROUNDUP THE STATE IA SX Smith bedevils Wingate with 256 yards "We had two people trying to get (Lamond Smith) all day long Give him credit a great WINGATE COACH DOUG MALONE "We had two people trying to get him all day long" Wingate coach Doug Malone said "Give him credit a great player He made all the big With a 6 -yard run in the fourth quarter that set up final touchdown Smith surpassed totals of 242 237 and 234 rushing yards that ranked second- third- and fourth-best on the singlegame list one thing I want to worry about" Smith said just wanted to do what I had to do to help the team That he did Smith a 6-foot 180-pound senior from Charleston guided the Terriers (3-5) to 518 rushing yards fifth-highest in school history and 534 total yards as they snapped a three-game losing streak and kept their chance at a winning season alive main thing the coaches wont let us do is Smith said "If we can take care of things and win the last three we'll have a winning But 65-yard score was most significant because it came only 12 seconds after Stacey 60-yard punt return for a touchdown and it erased 7-0 lead with 9:49 to play in the first quarter little punt return dug a hole for us but we Ayers said was Wingate (3-4) never led again the past (three games) had mental mistakes missed assignments and Smith said knew we had to limit Once the Terriers did that the Bulldogs who were giving up 517 yards per game entering this game never did figure out how to slow them down "The big key was to keep the ball out of their Ayers said what we were afraid of the wishbone giving us Malone said it did" What Wingate count on was Smith doing such a good imitation of Graves McNair forges achievements on and off field By NEIL WHITE Staff Writer SPARTANBURG Halloween's still one week away but Wofford quarterback Lamond Smith got a head start on the holiday by doing his best impersonation of Shawn Graves Saturday afternoon Smith looked just like former All-American quarterback rushing for 256 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Terriers to a 37-22 homecoming victory over Wingate at Snyder Held Smith's rushing yardage was the second-highest single-game total in school history Graves holds the record with 323 yards against Lenoir-Rhyne in 1990 Paladins outclass Keydets From Wire Reports UXMGTON Va Braniff Bona venture threw first in the McNair family to earn college degrees is important to our family and to me in so many said the quarterback matter how much ability you have or how far you go eventually your time in football is going to run out fortunate enough to play in the NFL I want a career after I retire For me and Tim this would be like breaking another record We would put our names at the top in our family And then for the generations to come it would be just as normal to earn college degrees as it has been not to have one chose recreation because I wanted to be a coach or work in a YMCAot in some group with kids I want to help kids I think every college student when he first comes has some doubts about succeeding on the next level academically have to mature fester You have the responsibility of waking up and getting to class on your own I had the fear I had some troubles But I learned to get in there and pay attention all in the mind and in the attitude If you think you can do it and you work hard at it you will It been easy and he has had a couple of classroom stumbles along the way but McNair said his education at Alcorn State has proved fruitful One class that had a significant impact on him was Social Institution The teacher was Alfred Morris McNair took the class last year and found that it stressed the physical and mental aspects of life and the means for success in a complex society McNair said he had always been shy and was scared late in the semester when Morris put each student including McNair in front of the class to teach ft would sit out in the UNMAN Was Steve McNair arrived at college nearly four years ago much like most freshmen Sure he was different in that he had gained a full scholarship as a football player as a quarterback and his dreams on the field were big one- But off it in the classroom he was like all the rest There was a quiet fear He wondered if he would make the grade On both counts at Alcorn State on the field and in the classroom McNair has passed die test We know about his football success Against Southern University Saturday he topped them all gaining 582 total yards in a 41-37 victory against Southern University becoming college football's career yardage leader McNair broke the record in the second quarter rushing for 22 yards and a first down on a third-and-21 play For the game he was 32-of-58 in the air with four touchdowns and he scored a fifth on the ground He is tops among all divisions Among all schools Among all players And with at least three games left he is not done know that I will leave No 1 among all divisions it will always be a highlight of my McNair said before the game offense is a big-play offense and my teammates and coaches deserve much of the credit I want to put the mark way up there I want it so high that no one will get close to No one might But McNair has also achieved personal goals in the classroom even as his yardage totals have been mounting on the field He has 19 hours of classes this semester and finals are in five weeks Through three years he has achieved close to a average Next semester he will take 18 hours and that would earn him a degree in recreation To get that diploma to walk across that stage on graduation day next spring would be a highlight for Blazers pass test with 54 against Bucs Tha Aaaodoted Preaa By JACK CAVANAUGH Tht New
