0 00 0 0 0 12 MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1998 THE DAILY TELEGRAPH- YACHTING Briton's monohull 'going like a train' By Tim Jeffery "WE TAKE our hats off to 'la petite said the French organisers of the St singlehanded transatlantic race yesterday as Ellen MacArthur climbed two places up through the fleet, despite her 50ft Kingfisher being smaller than many 60ft monohulls and multihulls left in her wake. "Since yesterday things have looking up," said MacArthur, 22, after six days of tough headwinds. "We're reaching at 12-19 knots great to have Kingfisher going like a train." Yesterday lunchtime, MacArthur was sixth among the monohulls and a highly creditable 13th among the 30 of the 34 starters who are still racing. While the leading monohulls passed the Azores yesterday, with Thomas Coville's Aquitaine Innovation II leading Catherine Chabaud's Whirpool Europ 2 by 20 miles, the easier conditions have allowed the trimarans to demonstrate their superior speeds, passing the halfway mark in the mile race with Paul Vatine (Chaus'Europ) just ahead of Laurent Bourgnon (Primagaz) and Alain Gautier (Broceliande). In Japan, Australian Peter Gilmour defended his NipMatch Race world title with a 2-0 victory over Bertrand Pace, the former world champion from France.

In Miami, British tactician Adrian Stead and trimmers Gerry Mitchell and Peter Jones helped American Jim Richardson, win the championship inaugufrom a 19-boat fleet. Brinn, the Jamaican-born 25-year-old who now has residential qualifications to swim Britain, won the 50m opening day. On for, Saturday he failed to qualify for the final of the 200m but won the final in a faster time than his Bath University team-mate, Andy Clayton. This means Brinn will gain his first British cap when he competes at these two events at next month's European Co Championships in Sheffield. He was hoping for a hat-trick of races but Hickman used his powerful turns to take the 100m. Gaining two metres on every one with Brinn closing down on the swim, Hickman finished 0.27sec ahead in 50.51.

Hickman had already qualified for four events and added the 100m medley by winning the event in Wolverhampton. The 100m freestyle is on the first day in Sheffield, sandwiched between his 200m butterfly and 100m medley events. While Brinn has added new life to the freestyle events, Joanne Mullins and Heidi Earp added a freshness and strength to the lacklustre women's breast-stroke races. Mullins, 14, from Orpington, won the 100m distance in 1min 11.16sec, beating Earp, three years older, by just 0.01 sec. Earp from Newcastle-underLyme, was the victor in the 200m distance in an impressive 2 min 30.26 sec.
