rainy season is heralded by two interesting constellations in the far south Aquarius the Water Bearer and Piscis Austrinus (or Australis) the Southern Fish They are both far outside the Milky Way but are filled with nebulae bright stars galaxies and globular clusters Binoculars should fairly easily find the Helix Nebula in Aquarius the closest of all planetary nebulae at a distance of only 700 light-years Planetary nebulae like the Helix have nothing to do with planets They are so-called because of their circular shape that vaguely resembles a planet Long ago a supernova exploded blasting out a great encircling ring of hot gas The Helix typically has a dark centre within a red girdle that seems to gape like a mouth Another splendid object in Aquarius that needs a telescope to appreciate it best is the Saturn Nebula another planetary nebula and so-called because its oval shape makes it look vaguely like rings Like the Helix it contains a dark central hole An easy binocular object in Aquarius is the brilliant globular cluster M2 a region where hundreds of thousands of stars are closely packed At low magnification M2 looks like a single if somewhat fuzzy star But even with a small telescope one can make out its individual stars especially at the outer edges In the south-west corner of Aquarius lies the spectacular spiral galaxy NGC 7184 an object almost identical to our Milky Way but greatly shrunk by immense distance Through a telescope it 'stands out starkly because there are few stars near it Now move south into Piscis Austrinus just above the southern horizon Here lies the brilliant star Fomaihaut the 18th brightest star in the whole sky bright because it is only 23 light-years away Fomaihaut is surrounded by a cloud of cool dust which suggests that it may be forming planets It would be 13 times brighter than the Sun if seen from the same distance but an Earth-sized planet that formed a long way from it could be habitable On the 8th there is a chance but only a chance of an exceptionally fine burst of meteors from the constellation of Draco the Dragon This if it happens will come from Comet Giacobini-Zinner which passes close to Earth this winter But there are many uncertainties about the They put on great appearances in 1933 and 1946 marking previous close encounters of this comet But they were not seen at others the dragon flame in asks the meteor hunter Alastair McBeath No one knows Of the planets JUPITER is very bright rising at about 8pm and visible for most of the night It should be easy to make out its belts and its four biggest moons SATURN also is at its best crossing the sky behind Jupiter Its rings should be visible being tilted at an angle of 16 degrees relative to Earth MARS is an early morning object not very bright and coming close to the sickle Moon on the 16th The rest of the planets are even more of a disappointment this month MERCURY and VENUS are too close to the Sun to be seen URANUS and NEPTUNE are in Capricorn and Sagittarius respectively and PLUTO is invisible Adrian Betry The Daily Telegraph Night Sky Chart of the northern hemisphere showing many more stars than our chart above can is
