So silk-covered perhaps together they can carry the burden of Reckless (ITV) through the next five weeks. Then again, I'm not sure even Atlas could. This dead weight of a love story was laden with coincidences that defied belief, sloppy lines and jokes that could provoke only canned laughter. Punctuating the whole was intrusive guitar music more -appropriate for a Western and grim shots of a Manchester alcoholic's house.

Sounds inviting, doesn't it? (Robson Green of Soldier, Soldier) and plot together young doctor Springeran Anna (Francesca Annis), a management consultant and his boss's wife. His increasing obsession with her developed against a background of the "understaffed, overworked" Manchester hospital where Springer and Anna's husband worked. With the present overdose of television white-coat dramas, this setting smacked of vu, and its portrayal fell short of ER perfection. This lakeside scene was one of many that demanded suspension of disbelief: would a young doctor dare to kidnap an elderly patient from her hospital bed? Equally unbelievable were the series of coincidences that brought the two lovebirds together (at least six, starting from an encounter on a train when he asked to borrow her mobile phone). Dressing for Breakfast Ch4: 9.00 pm A series in which Beatie Edney and Holly Aird make a neat double act, doing wonders for a so-so script. I suspect, however, that no one involved in Reckless would recognise the allusion to Now, Voyager. I've seen a snake only once, on a mushroom hunting expedition in northern Italy. I was about six or seven, and I remember how large, fat and deadly the reptile looked as it stretched across our path. My quick-thinking father and uncle placed several stones upon the monster, and invited my brother and I to have a close inspection.

I simply couldn't, and to this day am terrified of the creatures. Last night's Incredible Journeys (BBC1), A Rattlesnake's Tale, in no way stilled my fears, even though the narrator told us that "rattlesnakes are not ITV REGIONS 10 30 Local News. 2 50 Shortland Street. 10 40 "The Fourth 3 20 5.10 As Protocol" (1987). Pencil-sized and deaf, our rattlesnake moved about by tasting the air and using its tongue to track scents. For the eight months of the year that it was not hibernating, it set off on many incredible journeys through a landscape so colourful that you could almost forget about the beast whose progress we were following. One journey brought love, and its mating dance was wonderful to behold. Another brought it to a pack rat's nest (lunch), and finally it had a narrow escape from a hawk incredibly, I found myself rooting for the scaly one.

More animals on Survival (ITV), which concluded American documentary film-maker Cindy Buxton's return to Zambia's Luangwa Valley. Buxton wanted to see how a disastrous epidemic (anthrax) among hippos had affected the great park. Elephants fell victim to the disease, but hyenas and crocodiles were having a field day, attacking the weakened animals. There were horrific shots of scavengers feasting on poor hippos and impalas: the hyenas were literally splashing about in the blood of their prey. Not even the pups among hyenas are sweet: they looked like giant rats.
