The State Columbia, S.C. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Sunday, October 20, 1991 9C Clemson's Mouzon changed point of view By MARK R. McCALLUM Sports Writer CLEMSON Clemson defensive coordinator Ron Dickerson first heard of Tyron Mouzon in 1987. Dickerson was recruiting for Penn State, and Mouzon was a high school All-American defensive back at Florida's Dunedin High. "A tremendous, tremendous player," Dickerson said.

Others agreed. Mouzon, who made at least seven high school All-America teams, was called the best defensive back in Florida and was named the nation's top defensive back and its 11th-best player by Max Emfinger's National High School Recruiting Service. Mouzon never progressed. Leaving potential unrealized, he remained a reserve safety until earning a starting job this season. After becoming Clemson's defensive coordinator in June, Dickerson met Mouzon in person for the first time.

"I told him we thought he was one of the greatest players to come out of the state of Florida in the past couple of years," Dickerson said. "Then, we lost you. We wondered what happened to Tyron Mouzon." What happened is Mouzon, a 6- foot-1, 214-pound senior, lost his fire, his enthusiasm for football. Not starting, trouble with classes and personal problems made football less of a priority. "It was fun, but it wasn't as fun as it could have been.

Mostly because I wasn't starting," Mouzon said. "It was hard for me to adjust to being a role player. "If you accept it, it is not that difficult. If you start thinking about the old days and 'I should be doing Fourth-quarter rally carries Wolfpack by Marshall 15-14 The Associated Press Charles Davenport ran under a 34- yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone with 24 seconds left as No. 11 North Carolina State erased a nine-point deficit in the final three minutes to beat Division I-AA Marshall 15-14 Saturday in Raleigh, N.C.

The winning strike was made possible when Damon Hartman's onside kick was recovered by Sebastian Savage at the Marshall 48 with one minute left. Geoff Bender threw four incompletions but got a reprieve when Marshall was called for being offside on fourth down. Bender hit Ledel George at the 34 for the first down and then found Davenport in the end zone. The touchdown capped an unlikely scenario for a Wolfpack squad that was offensively impotent much of the game. N.C.

State (6-0) was pinned deep in its own territory when Bender was intercepted by Shannon King with 3:32 left. King's 15-yard return put the Thundering Herd (4-2) on N.C. State's 1 and Orlando Hatchett punched it in for a 14-3 lead. The Wolfpack came back for a 64- yard drive, with Aubrey Shaw scoring on a 1-yard run. But an attempted 2- point conversion pass fell short and N.C.

State trailed 14-9. Marshall, ranked No. 8 in Division I-AA, led 7-0 at the half on Michael Payton's 41-yard scoring pass to Brian Dowler. The Marshall defense, tops in the Southern Conference, kept N.C. State out of the end zone and Hartman missed field-goal attempts of 44 and 25 yards in the second half.

His 40-yarder with 11:56 left in the third quarter made it 7-3. N.C. State's only threat of the half came after Marshall's first TD. The Wolfpack moved from their 28 to the Marshall 22, but Hartman's 39-yard field-goal attempt missed to the left. File Photo "It was hard for me to adjust to being a role player.

Green's field goals tied the Wake Forest mark set by Wilson Hoyle against North Carolina in 1987.

Dan DeArmas brought Maryland within 19-10 on a 27-yard field goal at 6:55 in the third quarter, and Sandwisch hit Badgett on an 11-yard scoring play with 2:45 left in the period. By completing 17 of 28 passes, Blundin increased to 148 his total of consecutive passes without an interception. Blundin, who has not been picked off this season, broke Shawn Moore's record of 125 consecutive passes between interceptions.

Blundin finished with 206 passing yards as the Cavaliers (4-2-1, 2-2-1) began a stretch in which four of their last five games are at home. North Carolina (4-2-0, 1-2-0) was largely ineffective on offense except for tailback Natrone Means, who ran 22 times for 65 yards and had four catches for 66. Mouzon found more bad than good. Waiting on the sidelines behind more talented players, Mouzon got less excited about playing. His freshman year, he played mostly on special teams, making 18 tackles.

The next two years, he made a total of 37. He reached a point where he couldn't wait for the game to end. Or for class to let out. Six months ago, that changed. He couldn't wait for football to start.

By accepting Christ into his life while overcoming some personal problems and improving his academic status, Mouzon said, he regained his enthusiasm. "It has put everything into a different perspective. I think I would still be happy even if I were in a backup role this year," he said. He probably won't return to a backup role. Starting at strong safety in the opener against Appalachian State, he was named the team's top back of the week with two tackles and one pass broken up.

In five games, he has nineteen tackles, five passes broken up and one interception. Mouzon isn't trying to cram three lost years into one. "I'm not trying to go out and overdo it," he said. "I know I can play. And my teammates have confidence in me." As does Dickerson.

After seeing Mouzon report at 230 pounds, he decided to realign the secondary. He moved Robert O'Neal, an honorable mention All-American, to strong safety, believing Mouzon, whom he hadn't seen play, couldn't handle that position at his current weight. HAMPTON BUILDERS, INc. Box 90704 Columbia, SC 29290 He believed Mouzon's weight would diminish the talent, intelligence and aggressiveness necessary to play strong safety.

After the third day of two-a-day practices, Dickerson switched O'Neal back. But Mouzon honored Dickerson's request to lose weight, dropping 10 pounds. He further impressed Dickerson by attending workouts. "I got reports of who worked out this summer and Mouzon's name showed up on nearly every sheet. That made me feel good," Dickerson said.

Clemson coach Ken Hatfield said he expected Mouzon to step forward after passing several tough summer courses in his major. "When he came through that I knew he had the right stuff to be a leader," he said. Hatfield has noticed the change in Mouzon too. "There's no doubt about it, the conscientiousness of knowing his assignments, of being in the right place, of always having a positive attitude about everything he's doing is very evident. He has a much more mature Dickerson said he can't believe Mouzon was ever any different.

"Everybody that has been around him says he's changed his whole person," Dickerson said. "If someone would have said he was any different than he is this year, I would be shocked because he is an ideal player. The kind of player you love to be around. Smart when it comes to football. He enjoys practice.

He never complains." Mouzon has fewer reasons to complain. "I don't take things for granted anymore," he said. "I'm in a position that people my age would love to be in." And in a position he loves. "I have more control in the secondary. Defensive backs can see the whole field and perceive everything that is happening." Much like his life now.

"Everything is fun now," Mouzon said. THE INAUGURAL PALMETTO FOOTBALL CLASSIC South Carolina Florida vS. State October 26, 1991 2:00 p.m. Williams-Brice Stadium----Columbia, S.C. See Two of the Nation's Winningest Division I-AA Teams in Action WITNESS AN EXCITING BATTLE OF THE BANDS IDA SC VS.

Maryland (2-4 overall, 2-1 ACC) broke a four-game losing streak and put a damper on Wake Forest coach Bill Dooley's 174th ACC game, a league record.

Also overshadowed were Mike Green's five field goals, which tied a school record. Wake Forest (1-5, 0-3), trying to break a 14-game ACC losing streak, couldn't kill the clock after taking possession near midfield, and Green's punt to Maryland barely reached the end zone, but it was enough for the Terrapins to embark on the gamewinning drive.
