Columbia has only one VHF station (WIS-10). The rest are on the less powerful UHF band. Hall said he had been looking to make a move for the past year simply because he wanted the challenge of working in a bigger market. Hall also said he wanted to squelch any rumors before they get started. "This does not mean that WLTX is cutting back on its news operation," said Hall, who will remain at WLTX until May 17.

"We will continue to do what we've been doing. Since the gulf war we've added several news updates throughout the day, and we plan to continue those." Coincidently, Dawna Diggs, a reporter at WLTX for the past two years, is also leaving to take a position with the radio station at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg. Hall said that one of his jobs will be to hire a replacement for Diggs before he heads to Knoxville. A Columbia native, Hall joined WLTX (then WNOK) after he was graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1974. He began as an announcer for radio station WNOK-FM, then moved over to the television operation as a reporter the following year.

He became news director in 1978. Program director Gene Upright said the hunt for Hall's replacement will begin soon. "We'll miss Dick," Upright said, "but we'll search for what we think is a really good replacement. We'll talk to a number of people."
