The S.C., Sunday, Oct. 1, 1989 DeBusk passes Furman past VMI Associated Press LEXINGTON, Va. Frankie DeBusk passed for 219 yards and one touchdown to lead Furman to a 30-6 Southern Conference victory over Virginia Military Institute on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Alumni Memorial Stadium. "I was proud of our offense and the adjustments they made," said Furman head coach Jimmy Satterfield. "Frankie played well, and I thought all of our receivers looked good, especially Greg Key." DeBusk completed 14-of-21 passes.

Key caught six passes for 93 yards, including DeBusk's three-yard touchdown strike. The Division I-AA fifth-ranked Paladins scored 17 points in the second quarter to take command of the game. Bobby Daugherty scored on a twoyard run with 13:42 to play in the second quarter. After Glen Connally kicked a 21-yard field goal to make it 10-0 with 6:48 left in the half, DeBusk hit Key with 1:58 remaining for a 17-0 halftime lead. Carl Tremble ran in from 14 yards with 4:34 left in the third quarter, and Furman posted a 24-0 lead.

"VMI played with excellent intensity," Satterfield said. "I was impressed with their effort, even after we got up 24-0. They battled us to the end and that says a lot about the type of players they have." Furman, 3-1 and 1-0, scored its final touchdown with 35 seconds left on Richie Harris' five-yard run. V.MI, 0-5 and 0-2, managed its only score on Tony Scales' three-yard run with 9:25 left to play. "We did what was necessary today," Satterfield said.

"I was pleased with our passing this afternoon. We had a lot of trouble early getting the ground game established, but VMI had a lot to do with that. They slanted a lot, which caused us some problems, so we went to the air early." 10 4 Doug The State S.C. State's Antonio Mackey finds going tough against aggressive Citadel defense. Citadel From 1-C picture perfect.

On a second-and-seven from The Citadel's 33, Douglas rolled left. State appeared to have the play strung out for a sure loss. But just when it looked as if Douglas was going to be tackled, he pitched to Tom Frooman. Linebacker Robert Pitts ran Frooman down after a 41- yard gain to State's 26. On the next play, Adrian Johnson burst up the middle, broke a tackle in the secondary and sprinted to the end zone with 2:21 left in the third quarter.

Hank Burriss kicked the PAT for a 24-20 lead. State had an opportunity to pull the game out when Carleton Jinks recovered a Johnson fumble at the visiting Bulldogs' 38 with about nine minutes left. But the chance fizzled when a reverse on third down was smothered for a seven-yard loss. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty cost State another 15 yards and forced a punt with 6:09 to play. The Citadel took the ball on its 20, and from there it was the FroomanJohnson st.ow.

Frooman, who finished with 12, yards rushing in 15 attempts, and Johnson, who gained 82 in 18 attempts, gained the next 76 yards and moved the ball to State's four. A holding penalty set the ball back to the 14, but on the next play, Douglas gained 11 on a keeper. He covered the final yards on a rollout to left for the touchdown with 43 seconds left for the 31-20 lead. "We got our inside game going in the second half and Tom Frooman and Adrian Johnson took over," Citadel coach Charlie Taaffe said. The Citadel's first score came on Burriss' 30-yard field goal.

Douglas ran four yards for a 10-7 lead in the first period, and early in the second quarter hooked up with Phillip Florence on a 68-yard scoring bomb that gave the Cadets a 17-7 lead. It was his first pass completion in college. State, 1-3, took the opening kickoff and marching 67 yards in five plays and 91 seconds. Freshman tailback Antonio Mackey, who had 111 yards rushing in the first half and finished with 138, capped the drive with a oneyard touchdown run. Nick Caliguri added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs, trailing 17-7, scored twice in the last eight minutes to take a 20-17 lead at halftime. State, sparked by the running of Mackey and the passing of Otis Salley, marched 73 yards in nine plays for its second touchdown. Salley passed to J.W. Montgomery from seven yards for the score with 7:50 left in the half to close the gap to 17-13. Bill Melby blocked Caliguri's kick.

Salley passed to tight end Daryl Mendenhall on a 26-yard strike, and Mackey bolted 27 yards to The Citadel 11 to key the drive. "We made a lot of mistakes, and it was a struggle," Taaffe said "We had had trouble blocking their big people on offense. But our defense got after Satterfield also said that he was "impressed with our defense. We were able to contain them for the most part, and that's tough to do against the wishbone. Anytime you play a team that runs the wishbone on a slippery field, it's dangerous." Furman's defense held the Keydets to 190 yards rushing, 46 yards below their 236.3 yards-per-game average, which ranks 10th nationally in Division I-AA.

The Paladins had 422 yards total offense to VMI's 268. VMI head coach Jim Shuck praised the Paladins as "a good football team that can hurt you in so many ways. "We did a good job of taking away the run, but then we had to shift gears and work against the pass. We had some breakdowns in the secondary. "Our effort was good," Shuck said, "but we have to become a mentally tough football team.

We have the athletes to play in this conference, but we have to be mentally tough and quit Fur VMI First downs 23 17 46-203 56-190 Passing 219 078 Return Yards 0 11 Comp-Att-Int 14-21-0 4-14-0 Punts 4-37 6-38 1-0 0-0 Fumbles- Yards 7-64 5-35 Time of Possession 32:29 27:31 Furman 0 17 7 6--30 VMI 0 00 0 0 0 0 0 6- 6 Daugherty 2 run (Wood kick) FG Connally 21 Key 3 pass from DeBusk (Wood kick) Tremble 14 run (Wood kick) VMI Scales 3 run, (run failed) Harris 5 run, (kick failed) Individual Statistics RUSHING Daugherty 18-66, Harris 5-52, Tremble 7-47, Sterling 5-15, Sherwood 1-11, DeBusk 8-8, Stockdale 1-2, Baynes 1-2. McCALLUM Sports Writer CLINTON Wofford College had as much trouble converting scoring chances as they did trying to hold onto Presbyterian tailback Steve Parsley. The combination resulted in a 24- 22 Blue Hose victory, their sixth consecutive over Wofford, despite being outrushed 492 yards to 275. Missed opportunities abounded for Wofford, 2-3. The Terriers missed three field goals, lost two of five fumbles, lost a fourth-quarter touchdown by penalty and aided PC's final scoring drive with a running-into-thekicker penalty. Parsley, who set a PC record last week with 235 yards against LeniorRhyne, rushed for 218 yards and scoring two touchdowns, while raising his NAIA-leading per-game average to 186.5 yards.

Parsley's 37-yard, fourth-quarter scoring run summarized Wofford's woes. The senior tailback was hit at the 25, appeared down, then slipped away. He faked to the inside before hugging the sideline for a 24-14 Blue Hose lead with 4:12 left. The Terriers answered with a 10- play scoring drive, engineered by quarterback Shawn Graves, who broke off runs of 17 and 41 yards before capping it with a 13-yard scamper to pull Wofford within 24-20. Keith Green, who rushed for 166 yards on 18 carries, floated a pass to Rod Garner for the conversion and the Terriers trailed 24-22 with 2:05 left.

As a fitting last gasp, the Terriers' onsides kick went behind the Wofford line. PC, 2-2, took possession at the 30, and converted on fourth-and-five with 1:22 left to run out the clock. "It never should have been that close," Wofford coach Mike Ayers said. "All we have to do is make those field goals and it is a different tempo. The defense came up with big play after big play in the first half and we didn't capitalize on it." Five times in the first half, Wofford moved inside the PC 15.

The Terriers scored once. Tres Cox was wide on attempts of 36, 25 and 23 yards. The failure to convert squandered the rushing advantage. Wofford also lost two of five fumbles in the half. One came after Michael Dosher recovered a Blue Hose fumble at the PC 14 with Wofford leading 7-3.

The next occurred after Mountaineers' rally crushes Marion 49-14 MARION, Ala North Greenville trailed early but came back behind Eric Gomillion's two second half touchdowns and defeated Marion Institute of Alabama 49-14. Marion scored early on two Brett Howlan field goals and lead 6-0 at the half. The Mounties came out strong in the third quarter, scoring 21 points. Gomillion ran 26 yards for a score. Bobby Brown scored from 12 yards out, giving the Mounties a 14-6 lead before Marion's Joe Gilly caught a 40- yard toss from Jim Reilly.

Gilly then caught a pass from halfback Jeff Gobard for two point to tie the game at 14-14. Kent Meredith ran in from six yards as North Greenville produced a 28-point fourth to win going away. Gomillion, O'Brient Ellis and Shawn Odom added touchdown runs of 24, 27 and four yards respectively Joe Washington recovered a Marion blocked punt in the end zone for a Mountie score. Parsley opened the possession with a 32-yard burst. He closed it by jumping in for a two- TD. Alex Horton's conversion gave PC a 10-7 lead with 1:52 left in the half. Presbyterian, 2-2, shut down Graves, averaging 108 yards per game, in the opening half by opting for slight damage instead of massive. "A major concern for us defensively against the wishbone was not to give up the big play," PC coach Elliott Poss said.

"We felt we needed to make Graves pitch the ball and give up six, seven, eight yards rather than chance a 60-yard run." Parsley's 43-yard run on the first play of the second half helped PC widen the gap to 17-7. Shane Brinson popped in from three yards out for the score. The Terriers marched to the PC 27 on their ensuing possession, but Dean Richburg and John Fooshe stuffed Graves on a fourth-and-three. Graves got a manner of revenge, slipping into the corner on a 10-yard scoring run as the fourth-quarter opened. Travis Harrison kicked the point after.

Wofford trailed 17-14 with 14:54 left. Graves, who rushed for 112 yards on 21 attempts, broke off a 21-yard run to the PC 46 on the Terriers next possession. His 46-yard scoring run that followed and would have put Wofford ahead was nullified by illegal procedure. The Terriers backtracked and punted. PC went up 24-14 soon after.

Wofford opened the game's scoring with 4:24 left in the first quarter. As Graves debated near the firstdown marker, he flipped a late pitch to Green. Green snagged the ball behind him, broke a couple of tackles and raced 53 yards for the score. A 30-yard Salley-toMontgomery pass and gains of 11 and 19 yards by Mackey set up Salley's seven-yard scoring run with 26 seconds left in the half. Caliguri kicked the extra point for a 20-17 lead.

S.C. State coach Willie Jeffries said his team played well, but blamed mental breakdowns. "We have some talented young players," Jeffries said. "We can only get better. We had 20 points in the first half and had them on the ropes, but we just couldn't put them away." Jeffries said he was surprised how well his team moved the ball in the first half.
