Natalia Zvereva (9), Soviet Union, Memphis State selects Stobart Chuck Stobart, an associate head coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Southern California, accepted the head football coach's job Monday at Memphis State. Stobart, 54, will replace Charlie Bailey, who resigned from Memphis State on May 3 because of an NCAA probe. The National Collegiate Athletic Association put Memphis State on probation from 1986 to 1988 and has been investigating the university's football program for the past four months. The program could be shut down for up to two years if the current probe turns up major violations. Stobart, a former head coach at the University of Utah and the University of Toledo, said he does not expect the investigation to result in a penalty that severe.

Stobart, who holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Ohio University, has been at Southern Cal for the past two years. The Trojans were ranked ninth nationally in total offense last year, averaging 461 yards a game. 0 A judge has ordered the wife of Washington Redskins quarterback Doug Williams to surrender to police in a dispute over a $75,000 check made out to her husband. Golf What started out as the Amana VIP golf tournament in Iowa City, Iowa, finished as merely a practice round after heavy rains, thunder and lightning stopped play. A two-hour rain delay from 11:30 a.m.

to 1:30 p.m. forced tournament officials to split the pro-am into two nine-hole championships one for the par 36 front nine and one for the par 36 back nine. Defending champion Tom Watson was leading the front nine with a five-under-par 31 while George Archer and Gene Sauers were tied for the back nine lead with 32s. However, officials decided to cancel the tournament at 4:40 p.m. after another round of storms.

They also decided to split the $25,000 purse among the 43 golf professionals in the field. The top seeds made it through the second round of the 12-and-under division of the Southern Closed Junior Tennis Championships at two sites Monday, but there were several casualties among the alphabetical seeds. In the boys' division, Andrew Donavan of North Carolina, seeded 9-16, lost to Eric McCollok, also of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-3. Two girls seeded 9- 16 were sidelined as Loraine Bittles of Tennessee fell to Courtenay Chapman of Mississippi 6-4, 6-1, and Brooke Hatten of North Carolina was beaten by Janet Baker of Kentucky 6- 1, 6-2. Form prevailed otherwise among the top eight seeds as players from the nine-state Southern area battle for qualifying spots in national competition.

Wimbledon From 1-C blocking out past frustrations and failures here, raced to a 5-0 lead in the final set as Pereira's serve deserted him. Pereira held for 5-1 before Lendl closed him out with two service winners to improve his five-set record at Wimbledon to 9-1. "I expected a tough match because he's so powerful," Lendl said. "But I thought I played well. Except for one game in the fourth set, I hit the ball well and didn't give him many chances." Although Pereira is ranked 113 spots below Lendl in the world rankings, he was not satisfied with a moral victory.

"Every time you lose, you say it's a good experience to try to console yourself," he said. "But it would have been much better if I had won." After losing the first two sets to Chang, Scanlon rallied to take the third with the help of an 11-point run and went up a break in the fourth at 2- 1. But Chang, a second-round loser here last year, came back and won five of the final six games. "Things started to shift at the end of the second set," Chang said. "He started playing really well and took that momentum through the third set and most of the fourth.

In the end, it was just a matter of a few points here and there." Edberg, who was beaten by Pereira in a Wimbledon warmup event two weeks ago, had no problems against practice partner Pridham. "If he he'll plays the way he did today, I think retain the title," Pridham said. Connors, 36, is the oldest man in the men's draw. But he displayed youthful exuberance in his win over Cherkasov, firing winners from all angles, talking with officials and fans and doing a brief impersonation of long-time rival McEnroe. Leading 5-3 in the fourth set, Connors disputed a line call on a Cherkasov shot that gave the Soviet a 40-0 lead.

Moments later, however, Connors moved to match point on another close shot by Cherkasov that was called out. Connors reacted to the call with mock horror, then did an impression of McEnroe's rocking service motion and nervous head scratching before winning the match on a netted backhand by Cherkasov. Becker, who lost to Edberg in last year's final, eliminated Shelton in less than two "It's better to win quickly than to Strong From 1-C since I've been here, and I just think that hasn't been good in terms of stability," he said. "Our program has been up and down but I feel good about what we've done here the past 13 years. "I had an opportunity to leave four or five years ago, but I'm a dreamer; I always think things are going to get better.

That's why I stayed Athletic director King Dixon thanked Strong for his efforts on behalf of the program. "We're grateful to Charlie and for the service he has provided the program the past 13 years," he said. "We wish him and his family the very best." Strong, who won nine individual Eight Conference titles as a quarter- and sprinter at Oklahoma State, got his first coaching assignment in the service and later spent two years at the University of Kansas as a graduate assistant. He was an assistant at the University of Alabama for seven years before coming to USC in 1977. Strong was a staff member at the 1983 National Sports Festival and served as head coach of the South team at the 1986 Olympic Festival.

He was named Metro Conference Coach of the year in 1987 and again this year. Diaz smashes 19th homer TOKYO Mike Diaz, formerly of the Chicago White Sox, hit a two-run home run as the Lotte Orions beat Fukuoka Daiei Hawks 10-7 in Japanese baseball Monday. The top seeds in both the boys' a and girls' divisions didn't lose a game as Blake McMeans of Tennessee and Callie Creighton of Louisiana cruised past Jake Stricker of Tennessee and Autumn Richards of Georgia, respectively. In other boys' matches, No. 2 Stephen Collins of North Carolina downed Mark Jackobson of Georgia 6-4, 6-3; No.

3 Jeffrey Smith of North Carolina got past Chad Carlson of Georgia 7-5, 6-1; and No. 4 Gregg Hill of North Carolina swarmed all over Anderson's Adam Crosson 6-0, 6-0. In other girls' matches, No. 2 Carolina McBride of Georgia rolled over Susie Carlberg of Columbia 6-2, 6-0; No. 3 Carey Causway of North Carolina beat Anna Driver of Georgia 6-0, 6- and No.

4 Cena Hackler of Myrtle Beach topped Katrina Gildemeister of North Carolina 6-2, 6-0. Several other South Carolina seeds advanced in Monday's second round. Fifth-seeded Keith Brill of Columbia stayed alive in the boys' division by blasting Chris McRae of Kentucky 6-0, 6-0. And No. 5 Kelli Heaton of Aiken and No.

8 Mary White of Spartanburg also posted wins in the girls division over Shely Langston of Mississippi 6-1, 6-2 and Natalie Wallace of Tennessee 6-2, 6-1, respectively. The tournament continues today with matches at two Richland County Recreation Commission sites, the boys at Parklane Road and the girls at Caughman Road. Finals are scheduled for Friday. WIMBLEDON HIGLIGHTS Associated Press Boris Becker cracks backhand in victory. Weather: Mostly sunny, breezy and cool.
