Evening Standard, Thursday, February 4, 1937 13 NEW WEST LILLI PALMER reaches top ranking in "The Great Barrier." THE STEELWORK FOR RECONSTRUCTION OF. STALLS, NEW BALCONY and STACE DESIGNED AND SUPPLIED By SMITH WALKER Ltd. 16, CAXTON STREET, WHITEHALL LONDON, S.W.1. 8993. THE new Gaumont, Haymarket, is next door to Piccadilly Tube Station.

It supersedes the Capitol, which suffered from the disadvantages of having stalls thirty feet above street level and a circle which had to be reached by lift. All this has been changed to what is virtually a new theatre built within old walls. There is a spacious foyer, situated on the site of the entrance to the former Kit-Cat Restaurant; a few steps down and a few steps up- lead respectively to stalls and circle. The Gaumont will seat 1300 people, 800 in the stalls and 500 in the circle. It will have a unique air-conditioning plant, and a new system of electric lighting and heating has been introduced.

SPRAYED SOUND But probably the most interesting technical feature of the Gaumont will be the revolutionary sound-reproduction system, the Duosonic, which "sprays" the sound to every part of the auditorium, eliminating blind spots." Interior decoration of the Gaumont is carried out in blue and fawn, and an attractive feature is the marble work in the foyer. The Compton organ, instead of rising from the floor, will slide out from a curtained recess at the right of the stage. To-night's opening will be attended by Queen Mary. It is in aid of the Safer Motherhood Appeal. of which Mrs.
