COAL STRIKE THREAT TAGS LEWIS LEADER IN NEW WAGE DRIVE (Continued from Page One) said neither the union nor the government had approached the operators since the breakdown Sept. 12 of the last set of government-sponsored negotiations. Lewis' moves two weeks before the Congressional elections immediately excited speculation about his motives, which in past years, were regarded as broader than his declared objectives. That speculation suggested that he may want to set, rather than accept, the pattern for the next round of wage increases, to smash wage controls, 6 The Nation's Newest Sensation and His ORCHESTRA LAKEW00D Farewell Dance Thursday, October 24 Admission $1.25 Plus Tax BUS SERVICE: Leaves 3rd Oak 8 :00 p.

Some officials predicted that the session would run beyond the tentative December 7 deadline, but delegates and UN officials alike hoped to prevent a prolonged session by driving hard from the outset. Truman will receive UN delegates at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. They will then return to Washington by train, arriving here at midnight SPEED PROGRAM FLUSHING. N. Oct. 23.

(U.R) The United Nations General Assembly began a speed-up program today before it even met. The Assembly's Steering Committee slashed at time-consuming routine such as translations. It cleared the way for lengthy, twice-a-day Assembly sessions if needed. The rigorous routine must con tinue even on Saturdays, the com mittee ruled, although some of the cocktail parties will have to be skipped. The TJN secretarist earlier had planned only one plenary meeting a day with none on Saturdays The Steering Committee decided during a driving, five-hour session, however, that the Assembly dele gates must be ready to meet from 11 a.

In his request for a bargaining conference, Lewis referred to a "significant change" in government wage policy.

While there has been no major revision of wage stabilization policy, the White House has indicated that a change was imminent. If a strike develops, government attorneys again will be confronted with the question of whether Lewis and the miners have violated the Smith-Connally Act. That law forbids encouraging strikes in government-seized mine or factories. It does not prohibit individual workmen from staying away from their Jobs. In the past, Lewis never has "called" a strike.

However, the miners have quit work in government-operated mines when their contracts expired with no signal from him. In this instance, the contract cannot be terminated except through an overt act by Lewis. He would have to serve notice terminating the contract if the government agreed to negotiations Nov. 1. He already has declared the present agreement would be void if the government refused.

The Justice Dep.winent gave no hint as to whether it would regard either act as a violation of the Smith-Connally law. hands f.S J. one. Canada proposed that all major addresses be limited to ten minutes each. The committee rejected this suggestion, but arranged to curtail oral translations.

Capaciiy House Sees Minstrel A capacity crowd attended the second performance of the Lions' Minstrel held last night in the Mount Carmel Senior High School and like the previous night, the patrons were loud in their praise of the entertainment. Peter F. Ello, interlocutor and Stage and Dialogue Director, again kept the performance running at the proper tempo. A number of offers from out-of-town have been received by the management for the production of the program. Nothing definite has been done regarding these offers.

The proceeds will be used to purchase playground equipment for Mount Carmel Borough and Mount Carmel Township. The patrons not only were well entertained, but also helped along a cause that will be of great benefit to the children. The playground equipment will be the means of keeping them from the street, where they are in danger of being hit by automobiles. The equipment will also afford them greater pleasure in their play thus benefitting their lives. Fog Again Causes Treacherous Driving Fog, for the second morning in a row, blanketed this region.
